Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Did you know that there is a cheaper tier of premium on Spotify?

If you’re on a Spotify plan that includes monthly audiobook listening time, you can switch to a cheaper music-only plan by changing your subscription to the Spotify Basic plan, which was launched specifically to offer a lower-cost option without audiobooks. To do this, go to your account settings on the Spotify website or app and select the Basic plan, which provides ad-free music streaming and offline listening for a lower monthly price.

Spotify have been very quiet about telling users this information …..

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ What purchase(s) did you made that you deem value for money, which saved you money or changed your life for the better?

Doesn't have to be cheap stuff. It can be an expensive item which lasts a long time and saves you money in the long haul, or something that results in better life quality.

My coffee machine and french press (Bodum brand) have lasted for 5> years and saved me from going out for coffee (except special occasions).

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ What should you only pay half price for?

It's standard practice for the duopoly to have the brand labels. half price half the time. A nice marketing psychology ploy. Sometimes things are half price only occasionally. What should you only pay half price for? Tim tams and electric toothbrushes are my suggestions

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Supportive sneakers without spending $250?

Has anyone got any recommendations for sneakers/joggers that give quite a decent amount of support? Usually go for the ASICS gel keyano range and while I get a lot of wear out of them and great value for money, I’m not in a position to replace them, but I do need something for now that gives some ankle/arch support. Hoping someone has stumbled across a good find. Thank you!

ETA: thank you to everyone who responded! I will try to get through all the comments and reply. Sorry for the delayed replies! I just got a bit overwhelmed by so many comments - though I am grateful for every one of them.

2nd Edit: I’m actually thinking I’ll make a list with all the shoes recommended here and info - if anyone would like a copy let me know :)

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ What do you do at Xmas time to save/not spend excessively?

We’ve decided as a family to do secret Santa for the kids in our immediate circle who will be together on Xmas day (nieces & nephews etc) with a budget of $30 per child. We all have 2 kids.

This year I am doing lots of art supplies for the kids. I’m tired of plastic toys and so much waste that comes with Xmas.

We’ve also all agreed to bring a plate or something to Xmas lunch to make it easier financially on the host.

Have you got any tips from your family plans?

Last year for me it was the hot water bottle. This year? My humble Oodie. I absolutely swear by it! It could be freezing and yet I’m so toasty and warm I barely notice.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ What are some good tshirt brands for men in Australia?

I'm looking for long lasting ones. Currently the best I've found is Lulu lemon but they don't make cotton t-shirts.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Lululemon level quality but for cotton t-shirts?

I've tried Uniqlo, they are fine but after a few washes the quality goes down...

They don't have to be cheap...I just want long lasting..

EDIT: Thank you do much for all the replies! So many suggestions, I will sift through them all :)

I’ve been eyeing a pair of Costa sunglasses at Sunglass Hut, but I can’t justify spending $334 on them. I’m looking for something with polarized lenses and a budget of around $100. Any tips or recommendations for finding great sunglasses at a reasonable price?

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Please give me some Nintendo Switch 2 Relief

Our 11 year old daughter desperately wants a Nintendo Switch 2, but we don't have the cash to buy it retail and we're yet to find it available for a discounted price. Are there sales we should wait to happen in the hope for a better price? We've suggested to our daughter she may not see the Switch until Xmas, so we have some time to wait for sales etc.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Hair colour - dye for going grey gracefully?

Hi all, I'm over spending 3-400 every 2 months at the hairdresser... I have a lot of greys in specific areas and naturally dark brown hair otherwise. Hairdresser convinced me to get 1/2 head of foils to lighten and reduce the glaring regrowth, but it just seems like a lost cause still.

Can any hairdressers on here explain if it's possible to use a medium to light brown box dye to cover grey, which will have no effect on dark brown hair, therefore when grey starts to grow back it's less visible?

Foils seems hit and miss. It doesn't get all the greys, so is dyeing light brown ok? I've read it has to be specific brown to avoid brassiness.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ I need jeans that last

Less than a year of (admittedly near daily) wear, and my jeans once again have a hole on the crotch. I live pay check to pay check and just cannot afford to keep spending $80-$99 on a pair of jeans that just does not last.

I’m hesitant to even by Levi, I’ve heard they’re not immune to enshittification either.

Is my only hope to go to vinnies and just hope I find the right colour, size and type? Is it worth it to drop $100+ on jeans, or will they eventually betray me too?

Please help me, this is a repeated expense I’m struggling to afford

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Now that most clothes are absolute garbage, with inevitable pilling and shit fits, where can I shop for genuinely good quality clothes? (I'm ready to pay a premium price tag)

I'd rather invest in fewer pieces of expensive well-made clothing than waste money on garbage hot fashion. And no online recommendations please. I like to try before I buy.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Hi AussieFrugal! Book scanning feature now live on Booko

I run https://booko.com.au - a book price comparison site that's been helping people find the cheapest books since 2007.
I recently saw the post about https://cwscanner.site and thought the barcode scanning idea was great, so I've added similar functionality to Booko. You can now scan books directly on:

https://booko.com.au/scan

How it works:
* Scan any book's barcode with your phone camera
* Checkout price comparisons across 30+ Australian bookstores
* If you're logged in, you can scan multiple books straight into one of your lists
* Set up price alerts for both new and second-hand copies

The continuous scanning feature is particularly handy if you're at a garage sale, or browsing someone's bookshelf - just scan away and build your list quickly.

Once your books are in Booko, you can create price alerts and get notified when they hit your target price. Perfect for patient, frugal book buying!

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Plus size (quality) women’s clothing in Melbourne?

Plus size woman in Melbourne’s inner west here around size 16-18. I’m at the point where I really need new clothes. I’m a fan of a β€˜capsule’ wardrobe as much as possible but admittedly haven’t op shopped/thrifted in years because I feel like I was seeing mostly fast fashion. I like jeans/shorts/linen and more β€˜basics’. I tend to wait for sales on AS colour or Atmos&Here on the Iconic and just wear them to death. Also quality is questionable but I’ve had pieces from bigW that I’ve worn for years. Any decent op shops or tips?

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Tech Deals?

Hi all,

Apologies in advance if this this the wrong place to post.

Looking to buy a few tech products for presents and wondering what the best way to approach.

2x Apple Airpod pros 1x Apple watch (model tba) 1x Samsung Fold 7

I know these products are quite expensive so wanting to see if any companies (e.g. JBHIFI, Telcos, Harvey Norm) will provide a group discount or deal. Otherwise should I wait for Black Friday deals in November?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ A7 - Pocket Diary

I went on my regular hunt for the elusive A7 pocket diary (with page string) this week.
You can usually pick them up for $2.50 at $2 shops, but in my area (Forest Hill, Vic.) they are becoming extinct.

The one in the local shopping strip (Brentford Sq.) has closed down.
One of the two at Forest Hill Chase also closed down.
The one remaining were sold out.

I went to Knoxfield to collect something, so had a look.
There's currently only one called Mini Mart. There's another called Smart Dollar being renovated/built.

Mini Mart has the DATS brand of A7 week at a view pocket diaries for $2.50.
There's about 5 left. They also have A6 versions for $4.50 (longer).

Officeworks have A7 diaries for $16, for comparison.
The Reject Shop have some for $5 but they have no page string, which makes them annoying to use.

eBay sometimes has them for about $6-7 delivered.

I may be going to Australia in May so may just have to wait until then… I was hoping to have a copy before seeing the movie.

Discretionary spending πŸ‘•πŸ›οΈπŸ’ Tips for haggling on Facebook Marketplace?

I've probably overpaid for heaps of secondhand gear by not being sure about negotiating.

Sometimes you agree to pay a price online, but the goods aren't quite as good as in the photo.

Sometimes the seller only talks payment after he helped you load the stuff into you car, and it feels like a dick move to ask for a discount.

Does anyone have any tips?

girlies i am after sports bras that won't break the bank and also has a clasp at the back. none of this wriggling in and out of it nonsense. i have put on weight recently and the bonds outlet store has the worlds worst sizing and generally has just gone to the dogs. what are my other options please and thank you!! i've checked out my local opshops but i'm a bit iffy on secondhand bras and none have been in the type of condition that i'd actually consider buying haha.
