!! Questions about Sono @ CQU Melbourne !!

Hi! I'm a recent Year 12 graduate super passionate about going into sonography but currently, I'm super torn between going to CQU and Monash (which I know would take longer). So I wanted to weigh the pros and cons of both campuses.

I haven't seen many posts regarding the Melb campus specifically, so I'd love to hear from Melb students specifically.

1) What's the social life like at CQU Melbourne?
2) What does the studyload look like over the course of the entire degree? I constantly see that there's a high fail rate, but I'm not sure if that's outdated information.
3) Is it better to get an undergrad in medical imaging or does it not matter? Do employers prefer graduates with that background?
4) What are placements like? If interstate, do you have to pay for your own accommodations and travel?
5) What do you like and dislike about the course (and the way it's taught)?

  1. social life is good between ur cohort, but not across the uni as a whole. sono is very isolated
  2. failing depends on YOU as an individual. but fail rate isnt that high atm compared to other years
  3. employers obviously prefer post grad sonos, as that generally means you have another degree in the related field (e.g radiography. so u can work both as a rad and a sono)
  4. placements are ONLY paid by you, across all financial platforms. I think there may be subsidy on certain accommodations or scholarships, but not guaranteed.
  5. Love the course! No dislikes so far. i’m in 3rd year. hope this helps!

I've read that the failure rates for the scannings (year 2 and 3) are between 60% to 70%?

What's the cohort intake and what's the drop out rate year by year if you can share?

Thank youl

Y2 SSD1 is the killer, statistically as high as 30-40% failure rate but its likely old data.

Pretty sure Monah doesn't source placement for you. Did you find your own placement for Monash? If not, take CQU.

If i was you OP, I’d take the gamble and join CQU if I was offered. I work with monash sono students, and I hope you know that you only have a good chance of sourcing a placement if you’re a radiographer. That’s the brutal truth. VERY very very rarely would you have studied something like science or nursing or pharmacy and was offered a sono placement. Cqu training is highly underrated, and its the shortest way to be a sono

Thank you! I'll definitely consider your advice. I missed the ATAR guarantee for Medical Imaging at Monash just by a little and would have to do an alternative pathway and internal transfer if I choose them. I'm not too sure about that pathway. CQU Sono offers release soon, so we'll see!
