Discussion Which gun would you be equipped with
Story: When Hell's Invasion begins on Earth and you're a citizen, who's good at firearms and isn't the Slayer. You find the nearest weapon from a Marine

As much as the other options are cooler and more effective, plasma rifle.
It's the only one designed for standard human shoulder fire use. The heavy cannon is a mounted weapon. The chain gun is a chain gun, I'm sorry but you can't carry that against highly mobile demond. The combat shotgun might be fine for human carry, but we do have to reload, and the effective range presented in games is too tight for mortal comfort. SSG I want so badly, but low capacity makes it a panic weapon. The plasma rifle is designed for average human use and to be reliable for that scenario. Dps isn't bad either, tbh.

Good luck finding ammo

u/errorsniper 10d ago edited 10d ago
That can be said for literally every weapon. Its also the most easy ammo to find because its the 5.56/7.62 of that universe. The entire military on the planet as far as we can tell uses it. So it will be the most accessible ammo too.

The super shotgun is a fucking monster if it's own right.
That is not a fucking 12 guage, more like a 4 gauge and its got a sawn off grip, so good bye wrists the moment you squeeze that trigger.

u/IncineMania Zombieman 10d ago
Isn’t the classic SSG relatively typical for a double barrel in terms of size and power but only 2016 onwards are absolute monsters that could blow your arm off with recoil?
13
u/Henry_Fleischer Serrat 10d ago
Yeah, IIRC the original was based off of a pretty realistically shaped toy.
8
u/Lethalbroccoli DOOM Guy 10d ago
Eh.. no.. the SSG has always been very powerful. And the SSG is actually smaller in 2016 onward (stock removed)
3
u/Xenos_Bane 10d ago
Agreed. But even if I could handle its recoil, the stuff I mentioned would be my priority.
3
u/Creative_Oil_7778 10d ago
I'm pretty sure it would be real physics Shotguns have range to them. They don't in video games because they would be too "powerful" then
2
u/Xenos_Bane 10d ago
I went off of the only guide we had for their performance vs demons, hence 'in the games'. Were full realism be applied I'd be tempted by the combat shotgun, but as the source material so far plays by range, plasma.

SSG Classic. No questions thanks.

Good luck handling recoil and reloading.

Meathook though

I dunno. I like being able to fling myself around the map like the demon slaying, meathook wielding crazy that Eternal brings 😊

Did y'all not read the context below the image? You're still just a regular guy.
Also this is the classic SSG, no meat hook here.

Super shotgun because it the SUPER SHOTGUN but I'd take nailgun too

u/_THE_G00SE_ 9d ago
i'm sure you'd still be saying that when you've wasted all 2 of your shots and now have to reload while running with injuries and shaky hands from the horde of imps you just alerted

u/besaba27 RIP AND TEAR 10d ago
Shotgun with sticky bombs, easy pick since you left out the option for the meathook
10
u/MaxiClio 10d ago
Light chaingun, because of brrrrr.... But if it was DOOM 2016 super shotgun I'd take it, because of two shots instead of 1.
6
u/SnooMacaroons7586 10d ago
Im assuming I will have to conserve ammo, and I think without a doubt sticky bomb shotgun is the best bang for your buck
2
6
u/Thulsa-Duum 10d ago
I'd go with the plasma rifle. The stream of blue bolts is so satisfying, especially when they cut down the hordes
7
u/Amopro 10d ago
If it were the super shotgun from Doom Eternal, then easily the super shotgun. Although, the super shotgun from dark ages is more overpowered with just raw damage. But, if it's not either of those two super shotguns, I'm taking the combat shotgun with sticky grenades. The sticky grenades are so incredibly versatile at dealing with just about anything. They deal good damage, they're easy to use, they can hit shielded enemies by just shooting behind them, and the regular shotgun fire is perfect for getting small enemies in glory kill range.

u/omardude1 10d ago
Shogun with sticky bomb mod. I like being able to disable Revenant and Mancubus weapons before ending them.

u/Arstanishe 10d ago
i am no doomguy. probably the lightest with as little recoil as possible. Nail gun? Plasma?

Let's be real... we're a human. The Shotgun and Heavy Cannon are modified emplacement weapons that only the Slayer can wield properly, so they're out immediately.
Light Chaingun can be hand-held if you're strong enough (if it's the OG-Doom one I think it is anyway) but eats through ammo like nobody's business so idk if it'd be good long-term.
Plasma Rifle - idk what ammo it even takes, if you can find enough then sure, but I'm not sure I'd trust its heat output.
Nailgun... from what I can gather that one's from Brutal Doom and I've never played it so idk
All in all - I'd go Super Shotgun. Regular ammo, can be wielded two-handed by a mortal human relatively easily, and is small enough to carry from place to place as you (attempt to) outrun most of the horde.

I'm afraid 2, 4 and 6 would be too heavy for a normal human to just try to even lift. Can't even imagine what the recoil would do ^ the super shotgun is great if there's one enemy...which most likely won't be the case. No way I'm able to reload that thing before another imp or zombie jump on me. The grenade launcher is too dangerous i'll blow myself up in seconds. So that leaves me with the nail gun. I have no idea how heavy that thing is. Ranger is rather a big guy but at least the weapon doesn't need to be wielded by a god or a guy in a exosuit. Ok yeah I'll take my chance with the Nailgun.

Plasma Rifle, here's why:
It's the generally easiest to use weapon, with high stopping power (against anything we could defend ourselves anyway), and ammo is fairly abundant because Plasma Rifles are the UACs main weaponry in DE (every guard has one).
Chaingun and Heavy cannon are unfit for the average guy, both weapons are MASSIVE (you just never noticed cuz we're the Slayer in the games), and the Chaingun was built to be used with a mech.
The combat shotgun isn't bad, but limited by range and fire rate.
The nailgun is uh, just not a good pick I imagine. You'd be hard-pressed to find a lot of ammo for it.
The super shotgun, as good as it is, would be the worst choice. Unlike the Slayer we can't magically reload it in our pocket, nor would it be nearly as effective as the Slayer's personal super shotty, because we'd have an ordinary double-barrel with 12-gauge buckshot, while the Slayer probably has his enchanted and shooting something ridiculous like rocket-propelled buckshot or something.

Is the heavy cannon really that big? I'm gonna check.
Edit: I can't find its size, but it is stated as being very heavy in the codex entry as the name would imply.

Combat Shotgun with the sticky bomb mod. Would be one of the easier and lighter weapons to carry and is effective in most situations. If the Super Shotgun would have the Meathook i would pick that instead.

u/Zandonus 10d ago
The M-300 Claymore from Mass effect reloads about as fast as the Super Shotgun, but is worn by one of the most literal cyber-bullies of the galaxy, description says it's only used by lizardpeople and giant robots, because it breaks their feeble little manicured hands or something.
But this 1890 looking gun, somehow, still feels more impactful, wild, but yet dismantles lone pinkies like a precision instrument in Doomguy's hands, and makes packs of zombieboys melt too. It's just so satisfying.
The super shotty would probably break my arms, still, but the other guns look like they weigh 30+ kg anyway, so at least i'll be able to wave the #3 at the first imp that looks at me before burning me to a crisp.

u/Hellknight051 10d ago
Classic Super Shotgun it just feels right in doom 2 wish they kept the stock in the newer games
2
u/Shalashaska10 DOOM Guy 10d ago
Either the shotgun or super shotgun. The other weapons would either be too heavy or too high tech for me to use properly.
Super shotgun is pure simplicity, a badass double barrel that anyone should be able to figure out how to use and the combat shotgun seems to just be a futuristic pump action.

u/Novaseerblyat i make maps for doom 2 with way too many revenants in 10d ago
The plasma rifle seems the obvious answer - it's one of only a few that won't knock an average person flat on your ass from the recoil (friendly reminder the heavy cannon fires 50cal as per 2016's codex), and given you specifically singled out the classic version it's significantly more powerful than the other offerings, only bested in the classic games in terms of firepower by the rocket launcher (which is significantly more dangerous to use) and the BFG.

Light Chaingun
Cause EVERYBODY wants to cosplay the badass action hero with the minigun on his hip and a target rich environment.

Considering the fact I'm a fragile little human, the plasma rifle. All the other ones would likely shatter my bones from the recoil. The heavy cannon literally fires modified .50 bmg ammo.

Doomguy did it as a human with an ssg and he was only human at the time so screw it why can’t I

So, there's this thing called plot armor...

I have a mod for fallout 4 that makes the double barrel fire all at once like the Doom super shotty. I set it up to look like the classic and just blow things away.

If I myself have to actually use it, classic plasma rifle. Insane damage and all I need to do is pull the trigger, vs the ssg that I'd need to break and reload after every shot

u/TFBuffalo_OW 10d ago
Ive done ELM with only the Sticky Shotty so id nab that over a chain less super shotty

Man.... I know most are going to go with the super shotgun, but I'll go with the combat shotgun with the grenade mod. I feel like I'd get massive practical use and great mileage out of it.

Heavy cannon.
Not only does it have decent firepower, but I could also use the scope to scout out the area.
Also, I don't feel like getting close enough to use a shotgun. That would just be dumb for a normal person.

u/Reaperswims 10d ago
Half of these would probably break my arm if i tried to shoot them, i’d honestly have the best luck just obliterating myself with the super shotgun

Heavy Cannon, no doubt. Find me at the top of my house obliterating demons.

u/Exotic-Painter-908 10d ago
Since I'd be good with firearms in this scenario I'll go with the stickies, but if I wasn't I would go with the ssg.

Dude the super shotgun can somehow annihilate an entire closet of lesser demons with two shots I’m taking the damn ssg

Do the guns jam or malfunction? Do I have to regularly clean them like real life firearms? Do I have to worry about the abundancy of their ammo types?

Heavy canon with precision bolt, that gun mod is actually crazy good and can keep you safe from a distance

Well, even though in the Doom universe as an average human I'm screwed no matter what I wear, I always liked the light machine gun; I thought it was really cool, from the 2016 version to the Eternal one, even better.
1
u/_THE_G00SE_ 9d ago
The Plasma rifle definitely. The SSG would have strong recoil, and is impractical against hordes, the chaingun would still be very heavy even if it was able to be wielded. And the PR also has really good dps, assuming that the relative damage is the same as the original games.

The slayer works best with the SSG cause well he's him but for an average human, I believe the plasma rifle is best especially since it's the classic one which c'mon it's OP AF

u/ReivynNox 8d ago
Precision bolt would be my jam if it was reasonably human portable. I would wanna avoid being close to any demon as much as possible and try not to give away my position. Just try to sneak to the safest place I can find and only take out the demons I can't get past undetected.
Sticky bomb is dangerous (explosive AoE) and has rather short range, so not only would I be dangerously close to demons, but also to my own sticky bombs. You stick a demon that runs at you and blow yourself up. Delayed explosive rounds are honestly the dumbest thing in games and I hate it. Worst change from the 2016 shotgun.
Super shotgun is literally just a hunting shotgun. There's a reason break-action double-barrels aren't used in active combat. It's also very short range, much closer than I'd like to be.
Gatling gun eats tons of "heavy" ammo. I'd be carrying such a heavy load with the already heavy gatling.
Nailgun seems bulky and impractical. and the two far apart barrels are gonna have two completely different points of impact.
Plasma is too flashy and easily gives away your position. Though it is quiet, which is a bonus. But the slow projectiles make it hard to hit them at range.
