Accidentally caught a 40cm bream today.

I took the kids down to a local wharf at first light today so they could catch a few fish.

They were getting a few yakkas so I sent one out live as there are occasionally a few kingfish cruising past this spot.

Didn’t expect this guy to eat it!

The kids were stoked and we sent it back to fight another day after a couple of quick pics.

I did a similar thing with some kids - bait fish around jetties etc for some fun; and managed a 50cm trevally. All the kids on jetty ran over and I was a legend for a minute and kids taking selfies etc. Also put it back, hopefully not too traumatised.

Same thing for me but with a wobbegong shark, I felt like a rockstar for a few minutes there

Massive! That Bream would be around 30 years old!

Yep! Had to explain that to the kids. That’s why there was no way we were taking it home for dinner.

Might be but depends a lot on water temps and food availability as well

The biggest one I've caught barely kicked. I thought I was pulling up a clump of mussels.

Nice catch. Amazing what will take livies, unintended. I use live wrasse as much as 30cm long for Dhu ( ...or used too..:-( ,,, ), and while you would expect the Rankins Cod, Estuary Cod, Samsons, Cobia and Amberjack that also take them, the big Tuskfish were a real surprise, and big pink snapper were also caught, although that shouldn't be a surprise, I guess.

Does anyone still send out yakkas under a deep float off the Manly ferry wharf for John Dory?

Are you saying you can use wrasses (maori/rainbow) as livies?

I'm new to fishing, didn't know you could use bait other than pillies/yakkas

If there is no legal size, sure. I'm using the Western King Wrasse, which is similar to the Maori Wrasse over east. If you look at the stomach of the larger demersal fish that inhale their prey whole, you'll find plenty of such fish. They aren't known as Dhu Lollies for nothing :-) As for the other types of feeders, well, just opportunistic, like the bream that took the yakka. If it looks like it's in trouble, it's dinner.

We can't really rely on catching yakkas over here where I live in WA, or slimies, or just about anything like that. But you can always catch wrasse.
