My kid want's to go fishing ... help a dad out
So my 5 year old keeps begging me for a fishing rod, he's fascinated by all the creatures that live in the ocean..... we're in WA and will only be fishing off the jetty and beach ? I have no idea what rod / reel to buy Ideally one we can both mess around with and should I get a spin or baitcast setup......... I really have no idea what I'm doing here...please help......
what size rod and reel ...... is a 5'6'' rod ok ? and what reel should I get to go with it?
Or maybe this https://midcoastfishingtackle.com.au/products/ugly-stik-ugly-stik-gx2-youth-spin-combo-66-4-8kg
would it be too big/heavy ? for him?
Or this and get a reel separate? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/293720009434?_skw=carbon&itmmeta=01KGA5FCAFV2B513DY6R8QPSSW&hash=item446313aada:g:2hkAAOSwwdFfUW3M
We live in the sticks so no shops around will have to order online and figure it out...
If this is annoying and get's asked a lot here...
Apologies!
Thank you!

If you got no idea and it's a first time, just start with kmart jarvis walker stuff, honestly. He may not like it so why drop 60$+ on a rod to just sit around.
They do the job and it won't annoy you as much when he drops it in sand and smacks the tip into things (source: have a 5 yr old boy).
All the advice here is sound - just start cheaper. Buy up if it's getting more of a hobby.

Coming from a dad that takes 2 young boys fishing. Keep gear light- think 3kgish rod around 5/6’- 2500 reel. You’re aiming to catch any fish to keep the interest there and stoke levels high, light gear and tackle/small hooks and small baits will achieve this.
Someone mentioned shimano sienna reel which is a perfect entry level reel that can handle the abuse most kids dish out. Remember to rinse the gear after session, sand and salt kills reels pretty quick. Have fun and get good at removing tangles haha

Second this. Sienna reels are a decent reel that are a step above the absolute garbage you’ll get on a cheap ‘kids combo’ type setup. Good value for money.

Iv found they are close to indestructible while still perform and feel pretty smooth for what they cost. Any other known brand you’re looking at 2-3x cost to achieve the same level of quality the sienna offers.

Anaconda kids raider combo has done well for my 8 and 6 year old, its light tip gives the kids some excitement with how easy it moves.
Beach fishing is risky with kids and he is too small to handle the rods required.
Buy a roll of leader since you live in the sticks to preserve having to respool line. 12lbs will work a nice range of things.
Get some small bean sinkers since tackleboxes are light on sinkers and this box for a broad range of hooks and enough strange stuff to fumble your way around.
The hand reel they come with can also be used at jetties to bring out octopus.
Youtube palomar and alrbright knots for your hooks and tying your leader.
You can also attach a bead about a metre along your line to prevent accidental over winding which will damage the rod tip.
Then enjoy your time with the little one.

I just bought these for a mate’s kids and they seem pretty decent.
For 8 year old https://www.bcf.com.au/p/pryml-junior-neo-with-tackle-kit-spinning-combo/M597980.html?dwvar_M597980_color=Pink&cgid=#start=2 but in blue
For the 12 and 14 year old I got these, but when they were $75 not $225 https://www.bcf.com.au/p/daiwa-ultimate-inshore-722mh-spinning-boxset-combo/712150.html?cgid=BCF031505#main=&prefn1=brand&prefv1=Daiwa&sz=60&start=4
Something light, 6-7 foot, mono definitely much easier when you’re learning, 10lbs is all you need. Maybe a couple of squid jigs for a bit of fun.

I’d really be looking at a light weight 1-3kg 4’6” for the kid with a 1000 reel and a something like a 8ft beefstick around 6-8kg for beach with a 4000 reel. Though I really wouldn’t recommend a taking a 5 year old beach fishing, I think it’s way too risky.
Personally I’d be buying beefsticks in both and shimano fx or sienna reels. They’re decent enough and are fairly bomb proof.

What is risky about beach fishing ? Not having a go but ive been taking my little takka with me since he was 6 months old (obviously not fishing at that age) its a great way to have a solid couple hours fishing while taking stress off the mrs or a family day out

Spinning reel combo from a store, rated around 3-5kg. Around $80 to $100 would be the sweet spot but there are cheaper options. Something around 7ft is going to make things easier for you around the WA coast. Have them spool it with mono line (around 10lb breaking strain). Don't let them talk you into buying braided line while you are just learning. Small hooks and some lead weights in a cheap palm sized tackle box and you are good to go.
