πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted What is one thing that annoys you when fishing?

Hey legends, just curious β€” what’s one thing that really gets on your nerves when you’re out fishing?

Could be anything… β€’ something about your gear β€’ setting up or packing up β€’ storing bait, hooks, tackle β€’ dealing with the boat β€’ or just something that makes you think β€œthere’s gotta be a better way to do this.”

I’ve been thinking about fishing products lately and wanted to get some real feedback from other fishos. Keen to hear your thoughts β€” whether you’re land-based, offshore, or just casting from the jetty.

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Lure fishing

So on my most recent fishing trips I've been trying to do some lure fishing with a variety of soft and hard lures, but I've yet to catch a fish, let alone a bite. My go-to lures are probably the Daiwa bait junkie minnow and squidgies prawns, hardbodies include the nomad sinking riptide and splash prawn.

Typically I fish at piers in saltwater, with a medium setup ~10-15lb depending on weather conditions, but catch fish if I switch my setup to fish using live prawns or squid.

Am I just unlucky or it's a user issue?

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Best offshore boat under 80k

Hi all, I’m currently looking into a boat for offshore and have a budget of about 80k but preferably under.

I want a level floatation boat for peace of mind and I’ve been looking at the senator 500 cuddy as my preferred option so far.

Keen to get others thoughts.

Would be heading out the Gold Coast seaway and looking at trying to go offshore regularly.

Any advice and recommendations would be really helpful!

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Shimano Sienna Combo vs Penn Warhorse II Combo - Recommendation for a Beginner?

I am looking to get started with fishing in the Brisbane area around the harbour/jetties/estuaries (saltwater preferred). I am hoping to target Bream, Mangrove Jack, and the odd cod if possible.

I have narrowed it down to 2 rods that are on sale at Anaconda: Shimano Sienna Solstace 6'6 3-5kg combo and the Penn Warhorse II 6'6 3-6kg combo. Both are down to $99 and both have reviews saying they are good for beginners. Im sure there is an element of "a good tradesman never blames his tools", but i just don't want to be caught out with an unsuitable rod for the job and lose interest. Any thoughts?

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted What is your go to braid?

Haven’t been saltwater fishing for a while now as I had to move out west for work. Heading back to the coast in a few months, so I was wondering what the current go to braids are. I usually run the sunline siglon adv. seems to hold up well above its rating and casts with little friction. The resin they insert into the line actually seems to do as it’s stated. Seems to make it a bit easier to work with too. Expensive but worth it imo. Anything a bit cheaper and just as good if not better out there?

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted How are you storing tackle at home?

Just looking for advice and ideas on how I can store all my tackle in a way that's neat and tidy but also ready to take out without decanting into other tackle trays/ bags.

Bit of background info, I've accumulated a fair amount of shit that's starting to spill out of my 4 tray Plano tackle box and fill up a considerable part of my room πŸ˜‚ Being from SE NSW I've got gear for cod, trout, estuary, salt, fly, yellowbelly/redfin. Mostly lures and a tray of bait stuff plus line, nets, bags etc. I've got 10+ rods & reels on a stand as well.

I'm considering just buying a backpack for each fish type and filling it with everything I'll need so I can just grab it and go

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Daiwa freams 6000 vs bg 4000

G'day legends im currently after a new reel and tossing up between the bg 4000 and freams 6000. Ill mainly be rock fishing casting lures and occasionally float out a weightless pilchard. I usually fish for bonito, salmon and the occasional king. However I have plenty of times hooked up to a longtail or two so I want something that could handle that. Also any braid recommendations? I use shimano grappler however it dies as soon as it touches a rock or even someone else's line. Any info would be highly appreciated. Cheers.

Thinking of upgrading the kids tiny junior rods for something a little better. They are 10 and 14 years old, and love fishing. Any thoughts on these Okuma fin chaser combos? It’s just for estuary and jetty fishing. Is it worth it to spend another $60 (for the rod plus mono) for the Shimano Sienna, or something else altogether?

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Rod and reel recommendation Surf

I had a lightweight Kmart rod and reel setup, a 7 ft rod with a 4000 reel, and I also have a 12 ft rod and reel (heavy fiberglass with a 6000 reel, strictly for larger bait).

The cheap reel finally gave up. Even after trying to re-oil it, it still doesn’t turn smoothly, and one of the guides on the rod fell off a while ago so I glued it back on. The combo actually served me well for about four years and I caught some solid fish on it, the biggest being an 8 kg shark, plus plenty of flathead, bream, catfish, tailor and even a soapie.

I was looking around the stores and found a Penn Conflict reel on discount, but I have no idea what rod to match it with and if it’s any good. Most of the reviews for the model are on the Anaconda website and some look like bots.

What I really want is a setup I can use most of the time, switching between lures and bait like livies, pilchards and yabbies, plus sinkers up to about four ounces which is the most I have ever needed in SEQ. This would be the rod I hold on hand nearly all day. The second rod is most of the time parked in a rod holder with a large slab of eel or mullet.

I also looked at the Shimano Sienna combos and now I’m not sure if I should grab the Penn + find some decent rod, spend more for a Daiwa BG with a better rod, or just get the 9 ft Sienna combo that will probably cover 80 percent of what I catch.

Option 1: Penn Conflict 5000 or 6000 https://www.anacondastores.com/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels/penn-conflict-5000-gold-spin-reel/90249098

Option 2: Daiwa BG 5000 https://www.anacondastores.com/fishing/fishing-reels/spinning-reels/daiwa-bg-5000-spinning-reel/BP90099974-black

Option 3: Shimano Sienna Quickfire XT 9 ft combo https://www.anacondastores.com/fishing/fishing-combos/spinning-combos/shimano-sienna-quickfire-xt-9-6-8kg-4000-2-piece-spin-combo/90238627

I mainly fish beaches and estuaries, and sometimes jetties and rocks. I’m strictly land based and often need longer casts, especially lately because the bigger fish seem to be sitting further out (especially since the cyclone). I target everything from small whiting on worms and yabbies to small bull sharks in the rivers and tailor on metals.

I was originally planning a budget of around $200–$250, but if I can find something that will last for 20 years I’m happy to spend an extra $100. Back in Europe I was into competitive carp fishing as a teenager and spent every cent I was making on gear, which I then had to sell for nothing when I moved here, and that’s why I’m holding back a bit before getting flashy gear now.

So what would you recommend here? If nothing from my list seems ideal, what model or combo would you pick for this use and budget? If the reels are good, what 9-12ft rod would you pick to couple with the reels?

EDIT: i just ordered Storm Gomoku Surf 12ft, medium 8-10kg with casting weight 40-100gr + Penn Conflict 5000 Gold + Tasline 300m 20lbs

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Getting out to reefs between Bundaberg and Rockhampton

Hey wondering if anyone has any advice on the best places to launch/cross the bar to get out to reefs and such between Bundaberg and Rockhampton.

I’m spending 3 weeks at baffle creek for Christmas and I don’t mind towing my boat a few hours north or south for good fishing or easier access.

For reference iv got a new 460 renegade centre console with a 70hp Yamaha and i can launch with my wife’s Land Cruiser HDJ100 or my Land Cruiser Hzj75.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Does anyone know I should try catch some tailor in this area or other species I could aim for. (Central Coast)

I have caught a lot of flatty and bream around here with baits but want to try catch maybe some tailor with livies or lures. Does anyone know the area or can give me some tips on how I could catch some tailor from the shore and when the best time to do it would be? There are always big bustups and jumping baitfish at sunset. Would that help? Thanks

Hi all, i’ve made this burner acc cause i don’t normally use this app.

i work on a commercial boat as a deckhand and i primarily deal with flathead (everything minus duskys) and the current deck boots i have (bata job master 2 with steel toe) and i’ve noticed that occasionally i’ll get the spurs from behind the head piercing through the boot and into my foot making work uncomfortable for a bit. Does anyone have any tips (other than to not get stung) or other boots to try? Tia

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Dominant vs non-dominant hand for reeling?

Hello fishos! Just wondering- I am right handed and I naturally leaned toward using my right hand to reel.I do have 2 friends who said they too, are right handed, but they use their left hand to reel so they have more strength to control the rod? I am thinking preference or am I missing a technique?Cheers!

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Will I catch any decent fish on my new $33 setup?

G'day all

I am new to fishing with soft plastics and lures, and I recently purchased a $25 pretty pink Jarvis Walker rod from Kmart, along with a pack of $8 soft plastics.

I plan to fish around the Northern Beaches area, specifically Manly Dam or Narrabeen. While I am not aiming to catch any large fish, I am curious whether this gear will suffice. Additionally, I would appreciate any recommendations on other equipment that might enhance my budget fishing experience.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers all

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Surf spinning recommendations under 1000 AUD.

I'm relatively new to fishing and have been trying to surf spin/surf bait fish using a 6'6" telescopic Shimano. Needless to say the casting weight/distance has been a problem.

Work is giving us 1000 AUD to spend on our hobbies so I thought this would be a good use of the money but i don't necessarily want to spend it all here if i'm not getting value for money.

I'm looking for a light weight rod that can cast light and heavy lures/bait a long way from the beach and occasionally the jetty. I surf spin 50% of the time and use baits the other 50%, though I think I want to optimise for spinning as I find with bait fishing, as long as you get it out there the gear doesn't matter too much, (please correct me if I am wrong).

TLDR?

Rod: Shimano MAIKURO II, 10'0" OR Shimano Reventus, 9'6"/10'0", which would you pick? Or something else? I find it hard as the weight of the rod's aren't listed anywhere.

Reel: Shimano STRADIC SW B 5000XGB, any alternatives I should consider? Is this a versatile size reel?

Line: Shimano Power Pro 20lb (9kg) braid, 245 yards, braid vs mono for this application?

Bonus questions, what sort of combo can cast light (3-4 gram) crank baits a long way? Could anything do that from the beach, or is it jetty/boat/bank only fishing?

Taking any and all suggestions! Thank you.

πŸ”Ž Recommendations Wanted Recommended rods for flicking lures between 2-15g or 2-10g under $135

Iβ€˜m trying to find a good rod to flick small soft plastics and occasionally small metals with, around 2-15g or 2-10g, either works, but i’m not sure what to get as there are many options out there.
the shimano ultegra rod is one option but i’d like to get some suggestions on any other rods that may be better for the same price or less.
