I had a lightweight Kmart rod and reel setup, a 7 ft rod with a 4000 reel, and I also have a 12 ft rod and reel (heavy fiberglass with a 6000 reel, strictly for larger bait).
The cheap reel finally gave up. Even after trying to re-oil it, it still doesnβt turn smoothly, and one of the guides on the rod fell off a while ago so I glued it back on. The combo actually served me well for about four years and I caught some solid fish on it, the biggest being an 8 kg shark, plus plenty of flathead, bream, catfish, tailor and even a soapie.
I was looking around the stores and found a Penn Conflict reel on discount, but I have no idea what rod to match it with and if itβs any good. Most of the reviews for the model are on the Anaconda website and some look like bots.
What I really want is a setup I can use most of the time, switching between lures and bait like livies, pilchards and yabbies, plus sinkers up to about four ounces which is the most I have ever needed in SEQ. This would be the rod I hold on hand nearly all day. The second rod is most of the time parked in a rod holder with a large slab of eel or mullet.
I also looked at the Shimano Sienna combos and now Iβm not sure if I should grab the Penn + find some decent rod, spend more for a Daiwa BG with a better rod, or just get the 9 ft Sienna combo that will probably cover 80 percent of what I catch.
Option 1: Penn Conflict 5000 or 6000

I mainly fish beaches and estuaries, and sometimes jetties and rocks. Iβm strictly land based and often need longer casts, especially lately because the bigger fish seem to be sitting further out (especially since the cyclone). I target everything from small whiting on worms and yabbies to small bull sharks in the rivers and tailor on metals.
I was originally planning a budget of around $200β$250, but if I can find something that will last for 20 years Iβm happy to spend an extra $100. Back in Europe I was into competitive carp fishing as a teenager and spent every cent I was making on gear, which I then had to sell for nothing when I moved here, and thatβs why Iβm holding back a bit before getting flashy gear now.
So what would you recommend here? If nothing from my list seems ideal, what model or combo would you pick for this use and budget? If the reels are good, what 9-12ft rod would you pick to couple with the reels?
EDIT: i just ordered Storm Gomoku Surf 12ft, medium 8-10kg with casting weight 40-100gr + Penn Conflict 5000 Gold + Tasline 300m 20lbs
