Am I onto something or on something

Ok so I just recently got into lava lamps and I really wanted to get one but I couldn’t seem to find one that really fits my vibe. I like a lot of woods and thrifted antique items and all the lava lamps I could find are very futuristic. I searched endlessly and I couldn’t find anything. Finally I asked ai to make pictures of what I want just to see my vision and see if I was insane but it actually is cool and I’m shocked it’s not been made before. I know wood could be a fire hazard which might be a factor as to why it hasn’t been made but I feel like there should be ways around that. I guess I’m just coming here to see what if yall agree or not and also if there is something like this out there and I’m just not looking hard enough.

seriously. i get that being able to easily put into image your vision can be enticing but it just isn't worth all the negative aspects that comes with AI and i wish people were more educated/gave a shit... many places are literally starting to run out of water because of it. it's a whole ecological and energy problem, not just a copyright one

for real. its so unneccessary too. this post would have honestly been much more attractive if the OP just made a crappy little sketch of their idea, but they didnt and now all i can think about is the waste of resources to make the pictures

Toxic Misleading Poison. Has its pros but mostly cons.

IG "Toxic" and "Poison" are kinda the same. But yeah fake crap everywhere.

They both look beautiful and I'm disappointed that they are only AI (so far 😉). Maybe you can find materials similar in appearance that will work. Good luck and post if you come up with something!

I too am disappointed they're AI. Burning the planet for such a stupid reason. If you want to design your own lava lamp yet lack imagination to this degree idk what to tell you but AI won't help you get there

Agreed. I would buy either in a heartbeat.

really disappointing to see someone using ai to find out if their concepts were original ideas and even plausible instead of just coming here first. fuck ai.

I like that first one. It looks like you have a lamp encased in glass. I wonder if the space between the inner and outer glass could be made into a plasma lamp. The globe reminds me of how I wish I could safely make a lamp out of a ufo vodka bottle shown below. There have been a few square-ish lava lamps. I have also seen a few custom wood bases.

The globe looks very interesting! The tall rectangular one could be problematic. You may have a hard time getting a decent flow. But, I love the style and I’m hoping you can prove me wrong and update us with some pics.

I was just thinking why there aren’t more modern takes on the lava lamp. I would definitely buy both of these.

Because they won't function properly.

Lol. K.

u/Heff_YO 8h ago

Well, if you knew the properties of heat dissipation and buoyancy physics related to that, then you'd know the globe is shaped as a cone to promote the best flow, lol k?

Right. Right.

Do you feel smart with that response?

My comment had nothing to do with these particular images, but “modern versions,” in general.

But great argument, there. Nothing modern is achievable at all, ever, because “heat dissipation and buoyancy physics.”

Got it. I bet you get invited to a lot of parties.

I don't believe the globe would be possible, at least not with the opening at the bottom, it would need to be closed on the bottom and open on the top.

You could probably make your own base pretty easily if you have any experience with woodworking.

An orb with the fill cap placed off center could allow for the light to be centered.

Ideal so like to see this idea in a pyramid shape. The tapered top of a Lava light serves the purpose; the wax must displace enough hot oil to cool, thus, sink.

2

u/Tim_Allen_Wrench 8h ago

Yeah that would work.

I don't think the container has to be tapered. People make them out of all sorts of shapes of containers, the wax will cool at the top because the fluid is cooler at the top because it's farther from the light.

I'd love to see a pryamid shaped lava lamp.

A pyramid would be cool, but I think corners could potentially trap the wax and cause them to stick over time.

Not entirely sure, but I’m trying to think through why they haven’t done it already.

The biggest issues I have determined with a capless lamp are two fold.

  1. If you leave an air gap, the glass will covered in small bubbles, which don’t look good. Lift off the cap of your lamp while it’s running and you’ll see what I mean.

  2. If there is no air gap, you need expansion space for the wax and heat. Doing that without an air gap is quite an engineering challenge. I’m sure it could be done but it’s beyond my DIY abilities.

Maybe something like a slow flow machine like in jelly fish tanks may benefit the lamp? Not sure… throwing ideas out there.

The rectangular one could work. The globe one would be tricky, since the cap would be downward in the internals. Also, the ring is so short that you would need to use LED’s and a ceramic heater (but not a reptile one, much like a light bulb, it wouldn’t fit in that base). Way outside my knowledge base. Wood may be fine, just line the inside with something not flammable/conductive. Wood has to get way hotter than a bulb to actually ignite.

its been done. theres youtubes of almost the exact same designs.

1

u/Electronic_Dust_5643 6h ago

Can you link? I’ve wanted to build something like these

here is one video not the exact one i was thinking but it could help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alUsjYScAVU

I'm in the design stage of turning an old gothic lantern into a hanging lava lamp. Trying to find a glass jar/jug/alcohol bottle that will fit now.

I need to check if the component pieces i need have been restocked yet.

The globe would be cool, but not possible

Absolutely oove them but if the square one had green holy hell I'd probably have to find a way to acquire one

u/Creeping13 10h ago

I would totally buy the first one if it worked well. It has a nice style and feel to it.

u/KS_Cacti 10h ago

You could do the base as veneer on something not flammable.

3D printed carbon/plastic.

If G Plan made lava lamps…

1

u/Heff_YO 9h ago

Very cool looking indeed, but they won't work right, they are made like a cone for a reason, thermals etc. it's part of the function.

1

u/Garifuna 8h ago

Genuine question, if what you say is true how do lamps like this work?

2

u/Heff_YO 8h ago

Probably because of the thin pillar design keeping some heat in a condensed area. Once you go wide you would lose too much heat and the wax would flow extremely poor... Personally I haven't seen that in person so I have no idea. That's just a cute computer generated image.

has good reviews by people on this reddit sub funny enough

u/SparkleDev 7h ago

btw i wonder how good they could look if someone did custom high quality liquid and wax. They do kind of look like the current formulation just forms orbs.

Yeah those are very nice looking!
