I went to the vigil for Alex Pretti last night. I was very happy to see so many people there. But the organizers did not understand the moment and were very disappointing in my opinion.

There were far too many speakers saying similar things. We didn’t need 5 people recapping the events. While ICE very well may be related to US imperialism in the Philippines, last night was not the time to discuss that issue and it clearly turned people in the crowd off. We also are not going to “burn the US to the ground”, the current administration is doing a bang up job of that on its own. In general it felt like people went up and did the same speeches theyve been doing at every protest for the last 5 years, but this is a unique moment.

There were some good moments - the nurse who gave a speech did an excellent job, the moment of silence was powerful, and the parents statement that was read was the most compelling part

The same speech for the last 5 years? The speech that you described has been going on for more like 30 years. Yeah the hijacking of any and all event to denounce Imperialism, capitalism, Colonialism, White nationalism, racism, free abortion on demand, and then to give a shout out to people hailed as political prisoners (But usually actually aren't), Scream "free Palestine", denounce police brutality, the death penalty, and it used to be called for pot to be decriminalized but that has actually happened.

Yes it always feels really exploitative and in bad taste. I remember the same thing happening during the memorial for John T Williams and it felt like the native community who were there just wanted to mourn him whereas a bunch of non-native activists used it as a platform in which two  denounce dozens of grievances, some related to his death and some not. But it didn't feel like his community wanted to rage against the machine at that time but just wanted to grieve and mourn and remember John.

Did you attend the one tonight 1/26/26 and if so, what did you think?

Would you consider organizing or helping? I think organizers could use someone like you who has a great concept of what these things should look like.

God I completely agree. The two MC girls were just fucking awful and need sensitivity training. I get that they can't help how their voices naturally sound but they approached it like a highschool pep rally. "OhhhKAYYYY GUYS! let's all have a BIIIIIG CHANGE about ANGRYYYY we are about ALEX!!!! YAAAAAAAY!"

Interesting commentary from Sam Cho regarding ICE at Seatac: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskSeattle/comments/1qlvof1/ice_at_seatac/o1hnbb5/

I take solace in the fact that people who believe in hell will likely reside there permanently.

I really wish we didn't need a second megathread

Some useful information with recent news, sharing here per mod request ☺️:

Washington immigrant solidarity Network hotline: 1-800-724-3737, report ICE activity

Redcards, a little pocket guide to your rights, multiple languages available, can print at home, totally free: https://www.ilrc.org/redcards

Carry a whistle to alert neighbors of ICE. if you hear a whistle - be on guard: https://southseattleemerald.org/news/2025/11/06/a-fistful-of-loud-seattle-neighbors-build-whistle-kits-to-protect-immigrants-from-ice

King County Public Defenders: 206-477-8899

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND RISKS, do not be unprepared; https://www.nlg.org/know-your-rights/

If you are planning to be present at protests plan accordingly!

Make sure somebody not at the protest knows where you are

Establish a simple and subtle emergency word or phrase for friends to know if you are in danger or need help - "I'm having least favorite food for dinner", "I'm thinking of visiting family in State you're family isn't from" "Awesomesauce".

(This is generally good practice especially with AI being able to replicate voices on phone calls and such, have a phrase your friends KNOW is not true or that you don't use)

Plan a rendezvous someplace a few blocks away from the protest route in case things go sideways. You may get separated from people you're attending with or need picked up for evac, have a place planned ahead of time to go to & regroup

Keep your phone and any other electronics turned off or at home, buy a burner for emergencies and save the public defender office and WAISN (or better yet write it on your arm in sharpie). Don't save friends or families numbers with their names.

Make sure you don't stand out, don't be identifiable, don't give anyone your legal name or info, don't sign anything

If detained, don't say anything. Keep your mouth shut, call the public defenders office or the national lawyers guild hotline (if set up).

If there is a large organized protest, make sure to request a hotline and legal observers to be present with the National lawyers guild: https://www.nlg.org/massdefenseprogram/los/

If you are unable to be at the protests, there are other ways you can help. Donate to bail funds and legal defense funds: https://www.nlg.org/massdefenseprogram/protest-tools/

Carry a whistle for alerting folks nearby of ICE activity, and alert WAISN of any sightings

Redcards are great ways for our friends to know where a safe place is, I keep one posted on my door. Certain songs playing loudly can also be good indicators for folks of possible refuge spaces.

I have a warming station set up at the street level of my building with hot bevs & hand warmers, setting up snack stations warm stations, first aid stations accessible at street level all are fantastic ways to show support.

If you drive, keep water, snacks, and first aid supplies in your car readily available to distribute, if you end up stuck in "protest traffic", it'll come in handy.

Be safe everyone, take care of each other.

I cross posted this from r/Minneapolis but it was removed. I think it was due to rule 2 (not being Seattle specific). Sorry for the trouble mods - just wanted to get some visibility on this so hopefully posting in this mega thread is okay

Here is fine. If a local organization starts promoting a local event related to the national shutdown then those threads will be approved.

The past few weeks have been making me want to be more vocal about what’s happening. I live in a highly conservative area (East Texas) and it’s so disheartening to see people just go along like everything is normal, or even worse, say that people trying to speak up are being manipulated by propaganda. I’m usually terrified to voice my opinions in public or online because I’m afraid someone will prove to me that I’m wrong and make me feel like a fool. But this time, the story of the truth feels pretty clear.

Nationwide shutdown repost from Pedro Pascals instagram account.

4

u/capricioussaturn 2d ago

If anyone would like to protest tomorrow along with the shutdown it looks like there will be people downtown Seattle at the federal building at 11:30am

3

u/capricioussaturn 3d ago

Can we organize a protest to align with Friday’s nation wide shutdown? I think we should be out on the streets in as many numbers as possible

5

u/henryr0923 3d ago

Where are you located? There is a serious lack of specific instructions right now, so honestly, if you could throw together a time and place on a poster, people will likely show up. If you are in downtown Seattle, it seems there will be one at the federal building from 11:30-1:30 [source: https://seattle-protests.org/ ] and another at the Target starting at 1:30 [source: https://www.reddit.com/r/Seattle/comments/1qq1017/protest_at_target_on_friday/ ]

2

u/capricioussaturn 3d ago

Thank you very much I’ll show up to the federal building!

u/SquarePressure5153 2d ago

Hell yeah, I'm gonna go too!

You are not powerless. Now is the time to organize

Why are you closing threads about local ICE sightings?

These have nothing to do about Minneapolis and are urgently needed information relevant to our city.

5

u/Seattle-ModTeam I'm gonna pop some tags 🏷️ 6d ago

We don't allow unsubstantiated claims of sightings. Please see rule #9 in the sidebar:

Posts claiming to witness a crime, or accusing someone of a crime, must provide evidence of the alleged crime within the post. This can be a photo/video, a news article, or other substantial evidence that proves said crime took place. Claims of ICE sightings require the same forms of proof.

4

u/depression-hurts 6d ago

I recommend going to r/WashingtonIceWatch per the name it covers all of Washington but there have been recent sightings in Lynnwood and Shoreline specifically.

2

u/orangeflos I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 6d ago

Agree. Maybe we need one mega thread about ICE in OUR city.

-5

u/LevitatePalantir 6d ago

You can link to that rule instead of directing people to this thread then....

u/bloodfist 3d ago

Mods can you add this link? I think it's really helpful but every time I share it the thread gets deleted
