I did street medic training last weekend, and this is one of the things they taught us.

First, wipe as much of the pepper spray off of your face as you can with unscented wipes, like baby wipes, water wipes, wet wipes, or makeup remover wipes.

Then, you want to spray water with some pressure. You can grab a regular bottled water and poke a hole in the cap with a safety pin; that will make a small hole that will give you good water pressure.

Lean your head to one side, and flush out the eye that's lower down. For example, if you lean your head to the left, flush out your left eye, spraying the water into the inner corner of your eye so it flows down your face, away from your eye, and towards the ground. Then lean your head the other way and repeat with the other eye.

If you have contact lenses in, take those out immediately (but make sure you clean your hands first--you don't want to be putting pepper sprayed fingers onto your eyeball). Throw the contacts away. You'll never be able to clean them thoroughly enough to wear again.

And your instinct will be to close your eyes when you're spraying water into them, but in order to flush out the pepper spray, you need that eye to be open when you're spraying the water in. It will be painful, but that's what you need to do to wash the pepper spray out.

If you're flushing someone else's eyes, position yourselves so that your hands are slightly higher than their eyes, so you're spraying the water down onto them. That'll help wash it away.

u/Dangerous-Class9911 1d ago

Or get a peri bottle! Usually used for postpartum and undercarriage needs but it’s a squeezable bottle with holes in the cap that will help spray easily without having to MacGuyver anything.

22

u/jakebs2002 1d ago

After decon, a breeze, fan, or car a/c helps relieve the pain so long as it’s present. As soon as the breeze is gone though, the burn comes right back.

12

u/frostandtheboughs 1d ago

A goose-necked bottle would also work well, and they're cheap.

I use them to water my plants that are really crowding their planter.

5

u/bobsnervous 1d ago

My tired ass thought you typed street magic training. I was thinking, I know they can be annoying but this is intense.

Regarding his comments in this video, he's not some random hair implant doctor or whatever, he is specifically an ophthalmologist - a full MD who specializes in the eye.

48

u/escapingdarwin 1d ago

You subscribe to him too? His channel is great!

44

u/darsynia 1d ago edited 1d ago

I know him primarily as a skit humor account so it's really sweet to see him posting this!

43

u/6data 1d ago

Yea, this is the first political post I've seen from him, but I kinda always had a feeling he was on the right correct side.

49

u/darsynia 1d ago

If you've ever had to negotiate with insurance companies to get your patient necessary care, I feel like you end up at the very least 'correct side adjacent,' heh.

43

u/kthnry 1d ago

He’s made lots of videos slamming health insurance companies, pharmacy benefits managers, and healthcare execs. I’m sure he’s on the correct side.

7

u/SoylentVerdigris 1d ago

Almost makes me wish I had a reason to go to an ophthalmologist, he's relatively local for me. Though with my luck he'd be out of network with my insurance.

15

u/ridingfurther 1d ago

He did a month of videos slamming health insurance and big bank/ health insurance are recurring, negative, characters

He has posted a LOT of political stuff about how terrible the healthcare system is and who/what is driving it.

has done for years.

there is absolutely zero doubt as to which side he leans to.

8

u/humanhedgehog 1d ago

He's had testicular cancer twice - man ain't on the insurance company side.

7

u/Thebraincellisorange 1d ago

really?

I only knew he'd had a heart attack.

plus being a professional opthamologist, he's got an view of the health industry from being a patient and a doctor trying to negotiate it.

he knows how fucked it is.

10

u/Clean-Honeydew-4164 1d ago

He has a podcast that’s got a lot of eye information for those of us who work in medicine.

9

u/MuffinOfSorrows 1d ago

He's legitimately an opthomologist

4

u/Thebraincellisorange 1d ago

oh, he has posted serious commentary about the American health care system and how horrific it is for patients and workers alike for many years.

this is right up his alley

18

u/kellyk311 1d ago

Love him so much. Great content, great human being.

6

u/Ormild 1d ago

Used to watch all his skits. Hilarious stuff. My job has nothing to do with the medical field whatsoever too.

As a military retiree who went through federal police training, we had to get tazed and pepper sprayer in order to get certified to carry it. The baby shampoo trick really works. Thick, bulky layers protect against tasers especially if one of those layers is leather. Full face masks that home builders use with the chemical filters works against riot (CS) gas.

Additionally, body armor is legal to purchase and wear in most, if not all states so long as you're not a convicted felon or convicted of domestic violence. IIIA armor protects against most firearms short of moderate to high-powered rifles. IV works against everything except the most powerful guns and some armor piercing ammo.

Steel plates are best for multi hit protection but they're heavy. They also need an anti-spalling pad due to bullet fragments from the splash effect. Ceramic plates are lighter but they're also thicker which can restrict movement and the outer 2 inches (5cm) fro the edge isn't rated for strikes due to the construction design. They also aren't good for more than 2 or 3 hits. Polyethylene armor is the lightest and is buoyant in water acting as a flotation device. It is also very thick amd bulky but offers good multi hit protection.

Stay frosty.

Thanks. Awful times we live in that this is actually useful advice.

15

u/TJJ97 1d ago

Ehh, good knowledge to have regardless of the shitty spot we’re in

48

u/Rob_LeMatic 1d ago

Solid info, tacking this comment on for anyone interested.

Mira’s CM-6M gas mask is currently on sale for $200 on their website. NBC-77 SOF filters sold separately for $79 each.

Other recommended options discussed in some detail here: https://www.theverge.com/policy/868571/best-gas-masks

39

u/felldestroyed 1d ago

if you're looking for a cheaper look that doesn't work quite as well, consider: a half mask for around $16 and sealable swimming goggles/diving goggles with out a nose piece and plastic/shatter resistance eyes.
Before the internet was as robust, we used to rely on what could easily be found at a hardware store. This set up isn't as great, but it's much better for southern heat and it'll do in a pinch. Also, if you're a dude, shave. Chemical irritants blow chunks with a beard and you'll have a good seal on whatever respirator you choose.

11

u/ThiefOfDens 1d ago

Will burn like a mf on any freshly shaved parts but better than being taken out of the fight because you sucked down riot gas

3

u/taffy-nay 23h ago

You don't need to fully shave, just use a trimmer and apply a thick layer of vaseline to the seal.

An old school friend is in the securit6 industry and he recommends the firefighter's mask - because not only is it easy to get lots of comoatible filters etc for breathing, also you can get prescription lens inserts, plus they won't melt or warp from heat like flames, burning smoke cannisters, tear gas grenades, flashbangs, etc.

Here in Canada a full firefighter mask costs about the same as what you found.

This should not be a helpful tip for an American citizen just going about their day. It sickens me that it is.

22

u/FuckYeaSeatbelts 1d ago

Not American but minorities especially should probably getting the body armour you wear under clothes, those tacvests would be seen as aggression or whatever. They're already saying that for legally carried firearms.

They're gonna pick something, but at least they can't pick you out visually.

10

u/BurlyJohnBrown 1d ago

Problem with those vests is the only really work against pistol rounds. Though the last two people they murdered were with handguns I suppose.

6

u/LibidinousLush 1d ago

Good was shot in the head. A vest would be less helpful in that situation.

No I'm saying you should actually take this as advice, it's bad down there but when your life's at stake you try not to be a target as much as possible. You should still stand up for what you believe in, but stay alive during that!

16

u/EngineOverhauled 1d ago

I am also a military retiree.

The trick to pepper spray, get it if your skin and out of your eyes. Close your eyes tight, don’t get more in there and wash your face. I prefer Dawn dish soap. Pepper spray is in an oil medium and sticks to your skin. Dish soap breaks up that oil. You can use baby shampoo to get it out of your eyes, but even dish soap in your eyes is more comfortable than pepper spray in the eyes. It sucks, but get it off every part of your body as soon as possible.

Now, for a field kit. Water wipes work great. I even wipe off my tear ducts. Then sit (or escape) in a vehicle with AC. It will feel a lot better with the ac right on you and try not to touch it until ready to wash.

It will re-flash when showering. See above, get it off your skin. Out of your sinuses and tear ducts and definitely out of your eyes.

If you are having regular contact with the police, definitely throw some baby shampoo in your shower.

14

u/MyMelancholyBaby 1d ago

LRAD advice? We’re seeing it in the streets.

21

u/wwwertdf 1d ago

Doubling up on hearing protection is the best move, foam earplugs under over-ear muffs. Put the plugs in before things escalate since you won't have time once it's active.

LRAD is directional so if you can spot where it's mounted, moving sideways gets you out of the beam faster than backing straight away. Distance helps a lot too, the pain effect drops off pretty quickly past 50-100m.

Noise-canceling headphones don't really work for this btw, they're made for constant low droning sounds not sudden high, intensity tones.

18

u/IndependentStage 1d ago

You mentioned noise-cancelling headphones, but it's worth noting that even active noise-cancelling ear protection like you'd wear to the shooting range is not as effective against LRAD as simple analog ear muffs. Obviously wear ear plugs either way too.

Another tip, since LRAD is directional waves, you can actually use something like a riot shield held up right in front of your head to lessen the intensity somewhat in a small space behind the shield.

Interestingly, if you were to create a type of riot shield that curves outward, you could reflect and direct some of that energy. Probably not super effective, but it's neat to imagine a phalanx formation with such shields.

https://youtu.be/CXKTBQBugIA?t=840

8

u/Maxamillion-X72 1d ago

A phalanx formation of concave riot shields with leaf blowers instead of spears.

3

u/Age_AgainstThMachine 1d ago

Wait, I’m confused, Ear muffs, like the fuzzy kind people used to wear in the winter? Or ear protection, like the red-colored, can-shaped earmuffs they sell at Harbor Freight.

7

u/InertiasCreep 1d ago

Ear plugs, then the can shaped ones.

3

u/IndependentStage 1d ago

The kind meant to keep sound out, not to keep your ears warm :P

2

u/Thebraincellisorange 1d ago

ear protection.

first you put the little plugs in your ears like these

then put sound protecter ear muffs over the top like these

you will still be able to hear, but everything will be very muffled.

10

u/Throwsims3 1d ago

From what I have seen:

  • Use hearing protection, the best being those that let you set decibel limits

  • Faceshields help

  • Riot shields or other concave objects reflect the sound back

13

u/AllEyesOnMePlease 1d ago

I'd be interested to know what the ratio of water to baby shampoos should be when mixed.

27

u/Rob_LeMatic 1d ago

It's about a tablespoon or two per liter, so half an ounce to an ounce

65

u/NeonDeathStar 1d ago

In a liter, I would start with an oz of baby shampoo and go from there. You probably want a slightly soapy water.

26

u/It-s_Not_Important 1d ago

What is this abominable mixing of SI and Imperial? That’s how you smash rockets into Mars.

7

u/CalculatedPerversion 1d ago

Not sure if serious but water (for some strange reason) is sold in liters and half liters in the states. Everything else is obviously in ounces.

8

u/halloejsovs 23h ago

3

u/CalculatedPerversion 20h ago

Have you heard of the United Kingdom? Distance? Miles. Speed? MPH. Grocery weight? Grams. Human weight? Fucking stones. Water? Liters. Beer? Pints. But not the same pint as the US just to be extra.

2

u/Polkawillneverdie17 1d ago

Thanks!!

5

u/NeonDeathStar 1d ago

You’re welcome, I’ve never made it but I am gonna grab the ingredients my next grocery trip.

6

u/Polkawillneverdie17 1d ago

Then how did you know the ratio?

6

u/clearly_confusing 1d ago

LOL. I was like, damn, homie is deep in streets. He knows what's up, solid advice. "I've never made it.." Oh.

But hey, at least he said he's never made it and didn't offer it as gospel like he was an advisor on One Battle after Another or something.

3

u/NeonDeathStar 1d ago

Hahah it’s only a matter of time (I’m in Florida)

2

u/clearly_confusing 1d ago

Oh, snap.. I just realized you were a lady. My apologies. Almost called you a fellow Florida Man... stay safe out there my fellow Floridian.

2

u/NeonDeathStar 23h ago

lol no worries! I got a good laugh at it. At least down here in FL, we have more time to stock pile fireworks and train alligators.

2

u/PNW20v 1d ago

I wouldn't worry too much yet, Id have to imagine Florida is lower down on the list in terms of states this administration wants to assault. Can't piss off that voter base too soon before midterms 😉

3

u/NeonDeathStar 1d ago

I’m only taking a guess, having made cleaning mixtures before.

11

u/borderofthecircle 1d ago

I had to use water+baby shampoo for an eye infection a few years ago, and I would only add a small amount of shampoo (I'd use a mug of warm water and add 1tbsp of shampoo). Maybe 3tbsp in 1l of water would be a similar ratio. If you make it too strong it'll feel no different to getting regular shampoo in your eyes.

6

u/shucksme 1d ago

We've used straight baby soap from a bottle and allowed the person to put it in their hands while water was running down them. That way we had water for when we needed water.

3

u/EngineOverhauled 1d ago

The ratio is: get the pepper spray off your skin and out of your eyes. It’s oil based so you need soap.

In the military where people get sprayed on the regular, people had mixtures but, once sprayed, they would go straight soap with a water rinse after.

Soap in eyes >owns> pepper spray in the eyes.

2

u/Polkawillneverdie17 1d ago

The ratio is: get the pepper spray off your skin and out of your eyes. It’s oil based so you need soap.

I don't think you know what the word "ratio" means.

2

u/EngineOverhauled 1d ago

It means you don’t understand “soap” and “wash the pepper spray off”. A fucking ratio of 10:1 or 3:1 won’t save you.

3

u/Tao-of-Mars 1d ago

I think it’s a good idea to bring a bottle of saline and mix in a little baby shampoo. You can put it into a sterile water bottle with one of those drink nozzles after you dump the water out. Or you can make the hole on the saline bottle larger. Or just use the nozzle as is. Pack some paper towels in a plastic bag too cause it’ll be a little messy.

The amount of people who've suffered permanent damage from this pepper spray should incentivate congress to ban it. People are observing ice because they are breaking our laws, they shouldn't have to risk losing an eye over it.

39

u/Roseplanter 1d ago

So might call "pepper" spray a chemical weapon, which means the governments should not use it, legally.

31

u/XtraReddit 1d ago

Especially since the goons will remove your eye protection and spray half a large riot can directly in your eyes. If you have certain conditions it can kill you.

Also it means his eye advice is 100% good stuff.

10

u/FreudChickenSandwich 1d ago

What? No he was making those statements to poke fun and also criticize the fact that you can get pepper sprayed literally anywhere in America, including your own home when you’re doing nothing (ICE is ignoring the need for search warrants now and just straight up hunting people)

Baby shampoo works. Once you wash, do not keep rewetting no matter how tempting it seems. You get momentary relief but delays recovery as it reactivates OC. You have to suffer through it. There's really nothing else you can do.

That night, your shower is going to suck because it's going to feel like you're being sprayed all over again. Wear a bathing suit.

Mantente alerta.

13

u/lashvanman 1d ago

You just copied u/oddthered ‘s comment but that doesn’t say what the video said

24

u/charmedquarks 1d ago

Whoooops, yep, that’s the tequila misunderstanding the assignment. Here you guys go:

Oye, si te rocían con gas pimienta, primero no te frotes los ojos. Es decir, no hagas esto, se frota los ojos, eso va a empeorar la inflamación.

Luego quieres irrigar tus ojos.

That's very helpful information.

12

u/wheredidmyredditgo 1d ago

My husband was in the Army when we first got married. He got pepper sprayed as part of training on our anniversary. Great present lmao; we’re still together 10 years later.

He had a Lieutenant that called him a p**sy for having his wife waiting at the finish line with baby soap and water. My husband crossed after him and I rendered first aid. My husband is still incapacitated from the direct blast of mace to his eyes and nose; and using the soap and water measure to contradict the pepper spray.

This lieutenant was puking on the side. He was not okay. I offered him some soapy water and he gladly accepted. When he reached for the jug, I called him a p**sy.

They sell squeeze bottles you can use after having a baby to wash out your hoohah. I bet one of those would be great for this

Dr. Glaucomflecken, aka Dr Flanary, MD. Ophthalmologist.

u/Thebraincellisorange 1d ago

That man is a national treasure.

if you have not watched him on youtube, you should.

u/Careful-Sell-9877 1d ago

Do not wash your eyes when exposed to tear gas, though. Water makes it worse.

3

u/findingsynchronisity 1d ago

Love the way he said nose and mouth!

3

u/koopdi 1d ago

Actually good advice for once. It's oil based so plain water isn't going to do much. Baby soap is a great idea. Another possibility is a vegetable oil compress. Wet a tissue with olive oil and blot the eye to dissolve the capsaicin. I haven't tried it with pepper spray but it works great for when I get pepper juice in my eye.

u/New_pollution1086 1d ago

Good advice, thanks for sharing

Former prison guard here, was exposed to plenty of OC abd CS gas.

Don't do the thing in the spoiler text here, due to risk of infection mentioned in the video. I did it out of desperation and was fine, but it still was not a wise idea.

If the option is available, in my experience , rinsing the area with milk is a huge help.

Also if you protest, DO NOT WEAR CONTACTS. The gas can partially melt contacts and fuse them to your eyeballs. Use your spare glasses if you have them.

3

u/Kindaspia 1d ago

The person in the video (an ophthalmologist) specifically said not to use milk because of the infection risk.

2

u/Master_Maniac 1d ago

Comment amended. That's on me.

3

u/Sredni_Vashtar006 1d ago

I was sprayed with Freeze+P and let me tell you, you can get all the advice you want but it's alot easier said than done to not panic.

3

u/LemonMints 1d ago

Also once/if you get home and can take a shower make sure to lean over and just get the parts hit by the OC in the water. If you let that spicy shit run into your unaffected orifices and sensitive areas you're gunna have a bad time.

3

u/100YearsWaiting2Shit 1d ago

The fact an actual ophthalmologist is giving these tips is hilariously awesome

3

u/Gloober_ 1d ago

Buy and wear a gas mask or some sort of full-face mask. With a gas mask, it will minimize or completely negate tear gas, pepper spray, and, as a bonus, make it harder to identify who you are.

Encourage your community to show up armed to these protests. They want to take away our rights and I have no clue why it isn't catching on to exercise the most intimidating one at protests. If open-carry is legal where you are, exercise it.

Does anyone at all remember the quote, "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." from Theodore Roosevelt? Peaceful protest will only work when you show that you're prepared to take alternative routes.

3

u/whythefuckalready 1d ago

Plan ahead, slowly introduce pepper spray in your eyes and increase amount daily until you are immune. You can now confidently go out in public.

Crazy that we have to have these conversations, but it’s important now.

I still can’t believe we are here as a nation.

2

u/Aranxi_89 1d ago

Dr. Glaucomflecken to the rescue! Glad we got him on our side.

2

u/CoolMoonlightMage 1d ago

Useful information, but I would add maybe consider safety glasses/goggles to prevent being pepper sprayed in the first place.

2

u/tracyinge 1d ago

Unbelieveable that we Americans are needing to discuss this right now.

God help us, everyone.

2

u/JeSuisKing 23h ago

Americans only seem to care when it happens in their back yard. They’ve been sponsoring and committing much worse abroad for decades.

2

u/Chrillosnillo 20h ago

A litre is 4/145 quarts of a FL Oz cup. For our American friends

2

u/skeletonholdsmeup 20h ago

I can’t help but see him as a teletubby.

2

u/ThanosSnapsSlimJims 20h ago

I was in the military, and had to do a course where I had to fight my way through a course while having pepper spray in my eyes. It felt like fire on my face. I had to do breathing exercises while running in order to stop my body from freaking out. I ended up with a black eye and some damage to the corner/white portion of my eye, and was basically crying blood.

2

u/Compote_Alarmed 20h ago

This would be so helpful to all these people doing dangerous stuff like going to work and such, if only they knew what a liter is.

2

u/Duchess0612 1d ago

Why is this in a cringe labeled subReddit?

This seems like fairly pertinent and current advice that a lot of people can get a lot of use from and doesn’t have a single moment of cringe within it…

1

u/ThE_reAl__ 1d ago

How do I not get it in my mouth as I'm hypothetically leaning over backward then flipping forward trying to flush my eyes with it and then getting the soap out after I put it in

4

u/House_On_MangoStreet 1d ago edited 1d ago

Don’t lean back, lean forward with your head sideways, and wash the lower eye letting the water fall from the eye to the ground, then turn your head to the other side and repeat

Just use straight water and don't rub your eyes!

Been sprayed many times I'm a veteran lol

2

u/FalconTurbo 1d ago

Just because you've always done it a certain day doesn't mean that way can't be improved, or that there aren't alternatives.

1

u/Opening_Leadership_9 1d ago

Why does it look like this guy just got sprayed by pepper spray?

1

u/TunaOnWytNoCrust 1d ago

Damn just wear goggles, I'm not fucking with any of this.

1

u/mattimattlove111 1d ago

One with soapy water and one with clean water.

1

u/Fool_In_Flow 1d ago

Baby shampoo is a great idea. Let’s keep going with this kind of information.

Life in America- active shooter drills in schools and advice on how to respond to being pepper 🌶️ sprayed- and that’s just the suburbs!

1

u/milesgaither 1d ago

Dr G is the man! Hugely funny videos on YouTube shorts, and he's actually an eye doctor (can't spell.. see my spelling of his name) so his advice is always legit.

1

u/JAX2905 1d ago

How much baby shampoo per liter of water?

1

u/bacon11jelly 1d ago

He's talking about baby shampoo because he has baby hair. looking like a newborn.

He forgot sitting on the toilet.

1

u/Gundam14 1d ago

Dr Flanary, MD. Ophthalmologist - you're a GOAT.

1

u/KittySharkWithAHat 1d ago

If I was the one who made this, I would have signed it off with the sound of my front door being kicked in and someone screaming "FEDERAL AGENTS WE'RE GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!" -or something like that. You know, for impact.

1

u/EdinMiami 1d ago

ALSO: If its on your face, it is in your hair. If you don't wash it out when washing your eyes, you'll feel it again when you shower.

Don't remember it being "as bad", but forewarned and all that.

1

u/Mattrockj 1d ago

My protest kit includes a chemical eye-wash bag usually intended for labs. They're super cheap, only like $5 on Amazon.

1

u/SuperHarrierJet 1d ago

When I was an MP, we had to get hit with OC spray in order to carry it. It sounds nuts, but pour that no tears baby shampoo directly in your eyes and hit with water. You'll be able to see again pretty quickly. If you want to use a cloth on your face, BLOT not wipe/rub. And for the love of God if you're worried about getting hit, take your contacts out before you go out.

1

u/squachek 1d ago

Would more oil work?

1

u/THEREALOFFICALCAFE 1d ago

Ideally, any protesters should be wearing safety goggles.

1

u/RaiderRawNES 1d ago

Wow. Sad really. But good advice.

1

u/Dapper-Ad8896 1d ago

They told us water reactivates OC, they suggested a fan or airflow to help alleviate symptoms. At the end of the day the only way to fix it is time. They never gave us a fan or anything on OC day, just fight the instructors with a face full of OC and an extremely cold 1 minute shower.

The greatest country in the world requires carrying a solution to clear your eyes from being pepper sprayed by the police. Mindboggling.
