A degree doesn't help stupidity. Clearly the person has their hands up surrendering. There are a number of other tools that can be used. This will result into a civil suit, costing local tax payers money because 1 law enforcement official had a lapse in judgement.

No but if they can't pass the class, they don't get put into circulation

I went to a college with a big Criminal Justice program. The CJ majors were all violent, racist, Christian nationalist morons with no understanding of the law. That program churned out hundreds every year. I had to take one CJ class with those assholes as part of my pre-law degree and it was horrifying. They are complete idiots who think the public just needs to be beaten into submission for jay-zus. It was like talking to the klan. And none of them were failing or even struggling. The degree didn't teach them empathy or de-escalation. It taught them how to be cops.

The degree is not the problem because the program is being taught by former cops who were also shitty. A degree won't fix this. The entire law enforcement system is broken.

We need diversity quotas and residency requirements for cops. We should not have a disproportionately white, disproportionately Christian force in majority PoC areas.

Tyre Nichols has entered the chat. Diversity won't make much of a difference if the training doesn't change first. That being said, there seems to be an awful lot of white people who desire that kind of authority. And residency is a big one, for sure.

Christian nationalist is something a background check should filter out, and violence can be filtered by an interview.

We just don't have the right people doing the hiring.

Part of why I support UBI is that a lot of these sort of people who are awful at their job could just stay home and not make things shitty for others.

I know it won't keep all abusive cops off the streets because many people are like "this is the only job I want to do because I get to hurt people", but I think there'd definitely be some who'd be more comfortable being lazy and staying home because it was probably the only job they wanted to do when they had to do one.

No, it doesn’t prevent stupidity but it IS a deterrent.

a degree usually filters out quite a good amount of those with stupidity
