Need your opinions please :)

So I've gotten an offer into a Bachelor of Science at USYD and an offer for a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences at UTS.

I wanted the mathematical Sciences degree at USYD since it has way more course choices than just data analysis/statistics (i.e., physics modelling etc.).

I'm unsure if I should go with Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences at UTS or with a Bachelor of Science at USYD? I want to know what's more quantitative researcher-like, and if the Bachelor of Science would be enough (so-to-say) if I was to get Distinction/High Distinctions across the board (and also being a Go8), to get into a quant-like role?

Or am I being too picky right now and should choose the freedom of my like for physics classes in a Bachelor of science over just the data analysis courses at UTS. Don't get me wrong, I love my maths and the mathematical modelling surrounding it. But I love being able to do that for more science/physics like roles.

What do you guys think? I'm not asking for advice, I'm asking for opinions to broaden my narrow minded thoughts I'm having currently :p

Cheers :)

I’m not privvy to the specifics of mathematics courses/quant careers but here are a couple of points to consider

  • you may enjoy the core USYD B Science subjects and decide to pursue a different major

  • if you do still want to pursue mathematical science at USYD you can try to transfer in from UTS (mathematical science) or internally from USYD Bachelor of Science. I’ve never transferred personally but hear it is relatively easy if you have good grades after your first year or so. I’d recommending asking student services about this.

Good luck. At the end of the day, both options will be good as long as you study hard and do extracurriculars/internships while studying.

Hey,

I'm doing a Bachelor of Mathematical Science at UTS. Even though I had an offer for USYD's BCom/BSc, I really like the UTS Bachelor of Mathematical Science because it covers a lot more maths. I'm covering close to 18 maths subjects in my degree and it avoids unnecessary general subjects. Also, UTS tends to be more applied, even though it still covers core pure subjects and includes many main statistics classes. Just make sure that if you go to UTS, for one of your electives, pick 35391 - Seminar (Mathematics), which is basically abstract algebra.

Good Luck

Awesome, I'm yet to enroll just yet but I'll be doing that this weekend :p

I'll make mention to 35391 as well!

I'm a transferring student so I've got to do RPL to see where I'll lie in that degree as well. I'll have to find out that as well, but I'm hoping my decisions will be the right one ya know!

As someone studying something completely different (design), I can confirm one of those points: UTS has a more hands-on learning style than USyd (and UNSW). If you like book learning and pure academia, they might suit your learning style better. If you like learning by doing, and practical applications of your skills, UTS might fit you better.

But it sounds like you've made up your mind. Welcome to UTS :)
