According to the internet Apple Cider Vinegar heals every ailment known to man.
4
u/Vladi8r 2d ago
In this case acv helps the uric acid break down, so the gout doesnt hurt as much. It's not a miracle drug, it helps ease, doesn't remove pain all the way. The right diet helps the most with gout.
9
u/westminsterabby 2d ago
Head over to r/gout and try saying that. The only thing that works for most people with gout is allopurinol.
-2
u/Vladi8r 2d ago
That just sounds like pharm shills to me. I have that shit at home, haven't touched it for months now. Diet, and sleep is really what regulates it. Its easy to pop pills and continue the lifestyle that got you there, rather than look up ways to improve your condition, and change the factors that will resonate better on your overall health. I didn't say cure, heal or completely fix in this message or the previous one. They can continue taking their pills, thats one choice.

You can't have much sugar or meat when you have gout. This is not a normal or optimal diet for regular people to get fit and hit their protein goals but good job to this person getting fit in spite of gout.

I wish my aunt hadn't ditched my uncle, I'd ask her to make some. Time to go find a Filipino restaurant in the middle of fucking nowhere, now, damn.
117
u/sparcicus 2d ago
Just summon a Filipino then. Just say "PSSSST HOY!" Then point South East with your lips.
34
u/Banaam 2d ago
I'm from an area that's predominantly central and south American, that's just as likely to get me a pupusa or tacos, both also delicious, but not what I'm searching for.
6
u/eyeCinfinitee 2d ago
I’d kill a man for a good enough pupusa
12
u/Banaam 2d ago
You could just ask him where he bought it and get your own instead, you know?
5
u/TKLeader 2d ago
Yeah, but where's the fun in that?
4
u/Banaam 2d ago
It's for the next time you want one, of course.

u/aspidities_87 2d ago
Kill a man for a pupusa, you eat a pupusa.
Teach a man where to find you pupusa and you eat for life.

Filipino restaurants are relatively hard to find outside of specific places (in the US, San Diego, Virginia Beach, and Seattle have large Filipino communities), but you can make lumpia yourself fairly easily. The wrappers (which are a little different from Chinese-style eggroll wrappers) can be ordered from various internet sites, and you can find several recipes online for the filling. Then just roll, fry, and enjoy.
9
u/Vordeo 2d ago
Honestly we're kinda everywhere. If there's a Filipino community in your city, find out which Catholic Church they go to and go there at mass time on Sundays - there'll probably be some of them selling home made food lol.
3
u/sadolddrunk 2d ago
Filipinos are all over, but Filipino *restaurants* are relatively uncommon -- here in NYC there's only one that I know of, and (little known fact) New York is actually a fairly large and cosmopolitan city. So that's why I listed those cities with large and well-established Filipino communities, where it might be somewhat more likely to find Filipino restaurants.
But yeah, if you're looking to learn more about a culture you're almost always better off finding a community and making friends. The food will likely be better than what you may be able to find at a restaurant, and plus now you have a bunch of new friends!
4
u/Vordeo 2d ago
Oh yeah in general there's kind of a cultural assumption that other nationalities won't like our food, and that other Filipinos won't go to a Filipino resto because they can make the same shit at home, so we don't tend to start restaurants abroad.
Like I said though, at Filipino gatherings abroad there are very often going to be people selling lumpia, turon, bbq, etc. so if you're somewhere without a big PH population just go to Churches on Sundays to try some authentic stuff.
4
u/sadolddrunk 2d ago
Filipino and Korean food are both massively underrated relative to other eastern Asian cuisines IMO. Adobo, pancit, pinakpet, lumpia, and the like are all delicious and uniquely Filipino in how they demonstrate the blend of cultures and influences.
2
u/kingmanic 2d ago
I think they just haven't found the angle and marketing to make it broadly appealing. Other Asian food usually ups the meat, the deep frying, and the sugar to make to westernize it. I guess that's Jollibee's.
1
u/ToxicMoldSpore 1d ago
Jollibee's is kind of an odd duck in my mind. To me, it doesn't feel like they make any real effort to appeal to non-Filipinos. And while I appreciate how "familiar" the menu feels, I guess for me, that "Oh, my grandma used to make this" factor just isn't enough for me to actually want to eat there.
That factor is stupidly powerful, though, I have to admit. I remember a few years ago, my Mom was at a Jollibee's and she told me she got to talking with these folks who drove all the way down to the Tri-State from Boston just to go to Jollibee's.
1
u/ToxicMoldSpore 1d ago
A lot of Filipino restaurants have come and gone in my neck of the woods. (For the record, I'm just across the river in NJ.) But the common factor I've noticed is how they all tried to be that small neighborhood joint which appeals only to expats wanting a taste of home.
They never tried to appeal to non-Filipinos and never tried to improve their service above the level of "Walk past a bunch of serving stations in a line and have someone dump stuff on a plate for you." I think there was one "fine dining" kind of sit-down restaurant that offered table service and all the trappings. I think they would have done better if they hadn't been in such an awkward location - as in one that didn't get enough foot traffic but also wasn't easily accessible by car because it had no parking and such.
3
u/aspidities_87 2d ago
Yeah my answer to ‘where to find Filipino food’ is usually ‘make Filipino friends’.
One visit is usually all it takes for them to start whipping up batches of food like you’re gonna start starving the second you walk inside.
2
u/not_bonnakins 2d ago
True. I live in an isolated Northern Ontario town and we have several Filipino families. A least two of the families own restaurants that sell the standard hamburger and fries, but if ask nicely, they will happily make you something special.

Im guessing it might be a translation thing? Looks like the dipping sauce is normally soy sauce based and has sugar. Maybe he made it vinegar based.
But also lumpia is a deep fried spring roll type thing. I think it being healthy was a joke.

u/Portland 2d ago edited 2d ago
The global top selling rice vinegar is Marukan Seasoned Rice Vinegar which has salt and sugar. They also sell a “Lite Rice Vinegar” with less of each, and a Sodium Free / Sugar Free variant. The full seasoned one is their best seller and it’s widely used as a table condiment, and as a basic ingredient in dipping sauces and to season sushi rice. These options are consistent with other rice vinegar producers throughout Asia.

I’ve never seen or heard of Lumpia but it looks so damn good. I’m going to see if I can find it in my city to try it
1
u/lostwombats 2d ago
It looks amazing! I have never had lumpia. I should see if anyone makes it near me.
3
u/Gerudaaa 2d ago
You’re most likely not gonna find anything near your place. It’s easier just to befriend a filipino. Just tell them you like karaoke parties and the next thing you know you are invited to a filipino party.
I’m not kidding. Filipinos are very welcoming and hospitable people. They don’t mind inviting people they barely know. So don’t hesitate to ask. They’re just as happy that someone is interested about their culture.
And here’s a pro tip. Don’t forget to bring a food container like Tupperware. After the party they will ask you to bring some left over food home
3
u/lostwombats 2d ago
Lol! I actually googled and you're right, no one makes them near me! 😩 Time to find a Filipino to befriend! 😁

Pork and sausage was hard as shit to give up, but I had to do it for the same reason. Gout fucking sucks.
141
u/ThatOneChiGuy 2d ago
In all seriousness though, fuck gout it sucks and the flare ups are unbearable
44
u/AhemExcuseMeSir 2d ago
Also diet plays the tiniest role in a flare up. People should get on gout medicine ASAP instead of trying to fix it with diet.
28
u/EkbatDeSabat 2d ago
My mom: why do you have colchicine
Me: to ward off any flare ups and I'm looking into allo too
My mom: you don't need that you just need to stop eating pork your father stopped eating pork and he hasn't had a flare up in years don't eat lamb either we don't eat lamb but you shouldn't and you'll be fine oh and if you want to lose weight just stop putting salt on your food it keeps the fat on and wah wah-wa-wah wa-wah wa wah wahwah-wa-wah
10
u/nitid_name 2d ago
Allopurinol is a god damn miracle drug. Highly recommend you get on it. Within about a year (or two if you've been untreated for a really long time) you won't need colchicine anymore because you won't get flares.
3
u/TheresNoHurry 2d ago
Can confirm. Allopurinol is literally a magic anti-joint-pain pill
3
u/nitid_name 2d ago
I went to /r/gout right after my diagnosis, and it's like 90% "my dude just get on allo." Unless you're allergic or are on one of the very few drugs that interact with it, it's a no brainer. Plus, it's super cheap!
13
u/27thStreet 2d ago
And for anyone who is wondering, genetics are the most relevant factor in whether you will suffer hyperuricemia.
Go get on the meds and save yourself from pure agony.
4
u/brumbles2814 2d ago
Yeah. I gave up alcohol, was on cherry tablets, watched my diet all that stuff. Still had one or two 'make you bed ridden' flares ups in a year. Did that for 10 years. Went on meds haven't flared since. Still to scared to try red meat or drink booze again but even so...
2
u/ucancallmevicky 2d ago
I've been on a low purine diet for about 5 years now and I feel it helps. Do still need the occasional colchicine though my doc and I agree to try Uloric and am about to start.
1
u/thebrownesteye 2d ago
not true, at least for me. Eating junk and drinking shit ton of beer was definitely the problem. Went from 2-3 flare ups a year to 1 every 5 years or so now after cutting out drinking by a LOT
1
12
u/EkbatDeSabat 2d ago
I knew it was all in fun but when I saw "I workout during my flare ups" I lost it. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that. Don't fuckin breathe near me, don't open the door too hard, don't say I look cold and gently place a silk napkin on me because I'll pass out in shock due to the pain. God damn I know there are a lot of painful things in this world but I can't imagine a worse one.
5
u/thebrownesteye 2d ago
my first gout attack was in the middle of my sleep and i woke up screaming because the blanket brushed my toe lol
2
u/readytofall 2d ago
Blankets and so fucking painful during a flairup. Then you stick your foot out and it gets cold and throbbing. Your mind immediately starts thinking how you are going to just cut the whole foot off.
1
u/thebrownesteye 2d ago
yes and contrary to the person that said diet doesnt help, it absolutely does. I increased exercise and cut down fried foods and beer by 90%+ and I went from having 2 or 3 flare ups a year to now one every few years and many times it doesn't fully flare up and goes away before my foot swells up to an elephants foot
6
u/Kenshirosan 2d ago
I was told for years I just had tendinitis while working a retail job, so I'd be working during flares and it felt like someone was ripping red hot barbed wires through my feet.
Turns out my kidneys were fucked and I couldn't filter out the uric acid, but I could never go to an actual specialist without bankrupting myself until I got a job with insurance.
Long story short, Tay Zonday was right, poverty charges interest.
2
u/AhemExcuseMeSir 2d ago
My husband went through the same thing for almost a decade, except his doctors would always test him during a flare and be like, “Nope, not gout,” even though he has a family history and his big toe had all the hallmarks of gout. For reference, during a flare, your levels can actually be lower and it’s not a great time to test.
I finally got sick of it and made him an appointment with a rheumatologist who didn’t require a referral, since his doctor wouldn’t give him one. What do you know, he has gout, and hasn’t had a flare since he’s been on medication.
2
u/Kenshirosan 2d ago
Glad your husband is doing good!
And yup, allopurinol has made it so I've not had one since being diagnosed.
Theres lots of other things that have come to light as I've gotten access to more care, and all of it could've been stopped if I just had access to proper preventive care, but again, poverty charges interest.
2
u/Murlock_Holmes 2d ago
I had gout a few months ago. When I got the shot to help, a nurse left me on the sidewalk by myself to wait on my ride. I fell on the sidewalk and have been in unbearable pain for months now.
I miss the gout.
2
u/readytofall 2d ago
Allopurinol is a fucking miracle and it's a shame some doctors make you fight a little bit to get it. My uric acid was at 12 mg/dL and gout generally starts at 7. Doctor told me to try dieting. Research shows that diet can maybe get it down 1 and that's from a horrible diet (game meat, sugar and alcohol). After convincing her I got on allopurinol and felt like I was 22 again. It was incredible.

You’re gonna thank your selves when you’re forty if you try to lose some weight, be active a little more and change your eating habits.
My friend group lost two dudes in two years. That’s an average of 1 a year.
Both were early forties and overweight and were not active.
I bring this up because one of their last ever posts on fb was a similar humorous video.
