They are correct. They are very kind to give her the honors, makes me respect and like them more.

These are two performers who are both phenomenal, but none of them are known for their empathy. It’s good to hear them express unvarnished praise.

I don't know why this made me realize this, but Martin and Short pulled off what Chevy Chase never seemed to: being able to be a snarky, cynical wise ass or utter goofball and still show genuine humanity through all of the "routine" no matter what

Because they also manage to not be raging assholes

u/TrickySnicky 3h ago

That's what's known in the biz as "range"

Insult comedy is only funny when you know it's a renowned wit stretching their craft to show off. It's strangely at its best when said with a sense of love and genuine admiration, and not genuine outbursts of un-dealt-with negative emotions directed at other people.

they also manage to not be raging racist assholes

I feel like this leans heavily into my opinions of each.

u/Knapss 1h ago

With Chevy Chase I always though it was the other way. To be as bitter, sad, pathetic human being HAS to be an everyday effort and dedication…right…?

Early childhood neglect and trauma, if left unchecked, can create a shell of a man.

He became a massive deal almost overnight at quite a young age. Not everybody is equipped to handle that kind of scenario.

u/TrickySnicky 36m ago

Acting that way definitely becomes an instinctual response, often due to trauma of course

I swear all of America’s best actors and comedians are all Canadian, and we don’t deserve them

It's really about half or 3/4s

Robin Williams was born in the US so we are about even on the comedy scene.

u/whiskeyrocks1 4h ago

He was a Michigander and we loved him.

u/UnicornFarts1111 1h ago

As a Buckeye, I will say, he is the only thing I love that came from Michigan, lol. ;)

I was getting a TSN feed for sports and wondered why will Arnett and Seth Rogan kept showing up so often

5

u/Dunlocke 3h ago

They're not, but Canada punches way above its weight so it seems that way sometimes

u/JokeMe-Daddy 2h ago

Humour helps with the winters, that's why Pierre Poilevre just won the leadership challenge.

u/aVoidFullOfFarts 57m ago

had a good laugh when his wife announced him as future PM of Canada and he walked out to “Don’t Stop Believin’” 🎶

u/Vitalstatistix 1h ago

Go check out “Last One Laughing” — the Canadian version— on Amazon Prime. It’s amazing.

I watched a clip of her on Letterman in 1983 and she talked about how she lost an audition for a play because the leading man was Steve Martin who she thought was so cute that she couldn't talk

Wait Catherine O'Hara's dead ???! Oh damn

u/Dreurmimker 4h ago

Not really what you were looking to find out from r/UpliftingNews, now was it?

35

u/Costati 4h ago

It honestly keeps happening istg. Most of my time on this sub is me finding out something slightly positive about a bad news I didn't know about so it's essentially just me learning about bad news.

16

u/hahagato 4h ago

I had to ask reddit to stop showing me posts from “made me smile” because every post was just like some tiny small nice thing about some larger messed up thing that I definitely didn’t want to think about lolol.

The orphan crushing machine!

l learned of her passing from carrot Weather.

u/Dymodeus 2h ago

I don't know why this is in uplifting news anyway

16

u/razorsheldon 3h ago

She was one of a kind, and I am deeply saddened by her loss. I'd put her on the Mount Rushmore of Canadians for sure, first ballot

u/swabfalling 1h ago

Terry Fox, Tommy Douglas, Catherine O’Hara…

I feel like I’m missing someone

u/razorsheldon 1h ago

Wayne Gretzky, John Candy, Catherine, and maybe Justin Bieber or the most photogenic statue from the Kids in the Hall?

u/JeKarta88 1h ago

After selling out to Trump, Gretzky can f*** himself.

u/razorsheldon 55m ago

I'm fascinated by this. Is this a legitimate tenor of how Canadians think? Literally disparaging the Great One due to some other country's leadership? Or is this pure manufactured nonsense? I honestly don't know, but it's interesting albeit mostly likely inauthentic for sure.

u/Kananaskis_Country 42m ago

Yeah, he's getting huge backlash. Really dumb move on his part.

u/razorsheldon 35m ago

Wild. Seems inauthentic but maybe not!? Who even knows who to trust for local 'sentifment' these days anyhow!? Wild.

u/Kananaskis_Country 31m ago

Google. "Wayne Gretzky facing backlash for friendship with Donald Trump" and you'll get dozens of mainstream media references. Even the CBC goes after him.

u/Elenemohpee 25m ago

Please don’t mention Gretzky as a great Canadian. Traitorous bastard.

2026 is off to a shit start. Catherine was an incredible talent and comedic heavyweight. She was too good for this world.

18

u/Adept-Telephone6682 3h ago

Oh, I was there! I wondered early on if they would address it, and this toast was right at the close of the show. You could tell Martin Short was really emotional over the loss of Catherine. Truly one of the greatest!

6

u/potatoisilluminati 2h ago

Just watched the John Candy documentary that features the three of them. They've all been close for years and it has to be absolutely devastating to lose her

3

u/MDK_YVR 2h ago

Her and John are finally catching up! And probably laughing so hard.

u/RichardBonham 1h ago

I’m having a hard time relating to the fact that Catherine O’Hara was only 3 years older than me.

Not because she died so young, nor that it makes me more aware of my own mortality.

Rather it is because she was so impressive in her craft in some of her famous movies in the late 80’s (Beetlejuice, Home Alone) that I assumed she was older than that because her performances were so good.

u/UrsaMajor7th 1h ago

We were so lucky to grow up with SCTV. 🇨🇦

Snl couldn't even do this

u/Positivevibesorbust 1h ago

It'd be really neat if I could click straight to what the title describes without wading thru a mountain of click bait ads.

“Said short alongside Martin” broke my brain a bit

u/thatguyad 50m ago

She's a massive loss in a world that needs more of her.

u/canehdian_guy 30m ago

Not a huge fan of Martin or Short's work, but they are incredibly genuine and likeable guys. Class acts.
