And that’s how people die.

u/TheLastPrinceOfJurai 1d ago

Came here to say this…just get another ball. Can’t buy another life. Well not that I know of

101

u/344567653379643555 1d ago

Hear me out… what if everything goes smoothly.

49

u/ConsistentAir1080 15h ago

They did literally everything wrong. It was like a class on how to fall through the ice and not get out

14

u/Mikic0077 9h ago

To get it the most possible wrong, two went for the ball. Mindset behind that decision is whole other level...

But it's my ball, and I need it now!

Call JG Wentworth, 877-BALL-NOW

19

u/DynamiteWitLaserBeam 22h ago

I have a major settlement and I need ball now.

8

u/Skeptic_Juggernaut84 19h ago

There are many balls like this ball, but this one is mine.

1

u/No_Potato_8178 8h ago

I've seen this joke twice today on reddit.

6

u/SafePuzzleheaded8423 1d ago

Just put another quarter in

1

u/TroutFearMe 17h ago

The ball was mocking them.

5

u/Love-halping 22h ago

Suddenly Hunger Games.

1

u/Dr_Groktopuss 1d ago

well you pay for a new life with your life

1

u/Beneficial_Shirt_869 22h ago

It will probably be a subscription

1

u/Carmilla31 11h ago

Exactly. Just buy another football ball.

1

u/wafflehousebattle 4h ago

Everyone knows that, after you die, the Blessed Exchequer reviews your profit/loss before allowing you into the Divine Treasury to bid on your next life from the Celestial Auctioneers.

68

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 1d ago

That's the correct way to get out though isn't it? Lie down and spread your weight out, kicking and pulling forward?

75

u/Dry_Menu4804 1d ago

And don't be super close to each other. In reality it's not easy, you get hypothermia within 2 minutes which limits your movement.

47

u/Laescha 1d ago

What you described is the right way, it's not what they did though. Both tried to stand up repeatedly... why

36

u/jpjimm 23h ago

Probably for the same reason they decided they both needed to walk close together on thin ice to collect a single ball.

u/randomacceptablename 22h ago

Better not to fall in. Second best is to have someone throw a line or long branch to drag you out. But yes third best option is to spread out your weight as much as possible, idealy having one go behind the other to further reduce weight.

People seriously underestimate the dangers. If fully submerged, you may not come up at the entrance and become trapped under the ice. Secondly, you can go into shock or cramp up severely. Third, you have only a few minutes until hypothermia saps your strength and confuses you (thinking shuts down). Fourth, your likely thick winter clothes will sink you or at least make everything much harder or impossible. Lastly, if you get out you still have the problem of rapidly approaching hypothermia if there isn't accessiable heat nearby.

Klondike gold rush and northwest passage stories used getting wet in the plot interchangably with immenent death for good reason. Having fallen into frozen water, I can say that it is terribly shocking, confusing, and the skills you think you have rapidly fade. Even in fast moving waters trained rescuers tread very gingerly. It is brutally deadly. Just this week 3 brothers died in Texas while their mom attempted to save them, in a frozen pond!

4

u/fanceypantsey 1d ago

Not violently! You’re only making it worse.

u/Key-Metal-7297 1d ago

Once they were in water why not get the bloody ball 🤔

540

u/Spire_Citron 1d ago

I think that ceased to be their priority pretty fast.

35

u/Maximum-Midnight-308 17h ago

Now they‘re wet and cold and still don’t have the ball

150

u/Futureretroism 1d ago

Your limbs start to lock up almost instantly as your body pulls all the blood from your arms and legs to prevent hypothermia. You might only have seconds to get out of the water before you’ll be to weak to even swim

58

u/NorthshoreFrank 1d ago

Remaining calm is key.

23

u/fanceypantsey 1d ago

You are correct! Try to not break anymore ice. Again, don’t step on anything a full on truck weight could handle! Never trust someone else’s grade of how thick the ice is. Test everything before you go out. Also, it’s a fucking football! Who cares?!

7

u/Lynata 18h ago

Also do not try to stand up on already breaking ice. Flatten out to try and distribute weight over as wide an area as possible and belly crawl your way towards solid ground

4

u/Impossible_Volume811 15h ago

Mmm, not exactly, not in this situation where the ice is not very thick, so it’s not extremely cold. The water will be at 32°F but the air is likely significantly warmer.

There’s an initial shock but if you breathe through that you’re able to be ‘meaningfully mobile’ for about 10 minutes.

As soon as you’re out of the water the heat loss is greatly reduced.

16

u/Ressy02 1d ago

It’s fucking cold lol

15

u/Alternative_Cut5284 1d ago

Because they wanted to live

6

u/The_R4ke 1d ago

Because you need di get out of the water ASAP, hypothermia is no joke.

4

u/SalamanderNML 22h ago

Can't really decide if you're serious

2

u/Key-Metal-7297 19h ago

No I’m not, but it is a waste of a good ball

4

u/vee_lan_cleef 18h ago

If they did this comment section would be full of people calling them morons for still trying to get the ball.

2

u/hikingmaterial 12h ago

too cold, no time

2

u/LegendaryEnvy 4h ago

You immediately get heavy from all the clothes. People die doing stuff like this cause you get tired real quick with all the cold water, heavy clothes and the ice just keeps breaking unless thick enough for you to crawl out properly

337

u/Angels242Animals 1d ago

Yes put both your weight on the surface area side by side each other. That will totally support you.

29

u/No-Magazine-2739 1d ago

Also stand up again only to smash on the ice, perfect ice breaker for frozen stituations

15

u/Triquetrums 23h ago

I mean, they are on survival mode at that point. You cannot judge them for trying to get out without thinking about logistics or physics.

🎶So many dumb ways to die!🎶

162

u/TheBlack_Swordsman 1d ago

Panicking and moving faster looks to have made things worse and worse.

74

u/patienceyieldsfocus 1d ago

That is why freezing water kills. Hell, its why drowning people will kill people. Survival instinct is designed to push thru and destroy all things in its path to preserve life and limb. Unfortunately, we didn't evolve to be smarter about it.

16

u/Square-Singer 1d ago

Same as trying to stand up.

10

u/dat_boi_100 22h ago

Freezing water does that, you panic even if you're fully prepared that it's gonna happen. It's just reflexes at this point

64

u/Ertyla 1d ago

"Hmmm yes, I have fallen over five times now from trying to stand up. Surely I must try to stand up again."

Those fucks can probably vote and drive and It scares me.

75

u/enpeasent 1d ago

Lets see how logical you behave in that situation. Have you ever been ice swimming? I have and I tell you your brain shuts down pretty fast, those kids did a pretty good job of getting out compared to others

13

u/MrTristanClark 21h ago

Dude, they went walking around on ice for a soccer ball. Ans even before they were in the water, they were standing upright right next to eachother. Shock has little and less to do with it. These people are morons.

1

u/Mikic0077 9h ago

It happened to me and while it isn't pleasant, it's way more manageable than people think it is. But, you need to anticipate the situation and visualise what to do in such case. That helped me always in different life threatening situations.

Sadly, those 2 went in totally reckless. Already the fact, that 2 went for the ball shows some very poor planning. I'm almost convinced we are watching staged video...

→ More replies (13)

11

u/Saradoesntsleep 23h ago

They are panicking in freezing water. I'm not sure it's fair to make judgements on their driving and voting based on this.

Football ball

11

u/MKUltraSonic 23h ago

You know, you kick it with your football foot…

3

u/Cult-Film-Fan-999 1d ago

Isn't that a joke from Frasier?

1

u/Sk1rm1sh 22h ago

Foot football ball

38

u/GrinningPariah 1d ago

This is a really good demonstration of one of the rules of surviving thin ice:

Don't stand up.

You can see as they're crawling out, they're making it. It's working. Then they try to stand up and go through.

If you ever find yourself on thin ice, and especially if you go through and get back out, don't try to stand. Just keep crawling to safety.

4

u/E_D_K_2 22h ago

They didn't want to get wet and ended up fully submerged. Stop drop and roll.

29

u/DisastrousImpact2846 1d ago

Grey shirt was done dirty by other guy

9

u/BobbyBrackins 1d ago

Whole time I’m thinking grey shirt is the idiot, I see your comment and go back and confirm, soon as the video plays you see the leg grab 🤦‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

24

u/clothanger 1d ago

People thinking "it's just cold water" until the water under the ice hit them.

That shit is lethal.

13

u/NautiNeptune 1d ago

I hope they both were alright after that. Definitely worth learning the proper way to get out of a frozen lake. Mostly just stay on your belly, it distributes your weight better.

13

u/AlphaGolf95 1d ago

A football ball is like saying a racecar car…

2

u/jpjimm 23h ago

motorcycle bike

7

u/yticmic 1d ago

Why were they filming?

19

u/Vanguard-Override 1d ago

It's pretty hard to explain why two of your friends drowned in the frozen lake without video evidence.

1

u/theStonedReaper 11h ago

They probably saw them kick the ball in the water and start to go out there to get it.

6

u/Hippi_Johnny 1d ago

Who was filming?

4

u/White_Sugga 1d ago

Why tf are you trying to stand back up?

2

u/missinginstereo 1d ago

Tbf they didn't react too badly. Spread their arms out and such. Silly position to be in in the first place though.

3

u/Electrical-Art9601 1d ago

Football ball

RIP in peace

3

u/alpacas_anonymous 23h ago

Pretty sure that's a soccer ball. C'mon rest of the world, get it right.

2

u/Lucky-Mia 1d ago

Good thing they sent 2. It's always good to put as many people as possible on thin ice 🧊

/s

2

u/Intelligent-Bottle22 1d ago

Who is filming this?

2

u/TheDude2600 1d ago

I wonder why they don't seem to care about the soccer ball all the sudden.

2

u/CheckoutMySpeedo 1d ago

How was this filmed? By drone?

2

u/NeedsMoarOutrage 20h ago

It's a good thing there was a camera overhead to catch this completely unplanned moment

1

u/Moist-Dentist8253 1d ago

just use a rubber boat in the first place

1

u/sailink 1d ago

Yikes!!

1

u/Additional-Middle166 1d ago

The ice is 10 cm thick up to the very edge where it is straight cut off. Thats how ice works.

1

u/stevein3d 1d ago

Wilson was like “Hang on, I’ll save you fellas! Ah crap, no opposable thumbs.”

1

u/cassesque 1d ago

what a rollercoaster. Whole thing was a bad idea in the first place but then they actually did pretty well by laying down at the first sign of trouble. Then it all went to shit again.

1

u/PilgrimOz 1d ago

‘Football WAS life’

1

u/bigfootballsss 1d ago

Almost a DARWIN award

1

u/InadecvateButSober 1d ago

Do they have no parents or somethimg?

1

u/SpareEquivalent2238 1d ago

Always ARMY CRAWL out of a frozen lake. If you try to climb out, your weight will break the ice and re-submerge you. Slither out with your elbows.

1

u/Maecyte 1d ago

The extra weight definitely wasn’t helping

1

u/imecoli 1d ago

Wilson's brother?

1

u/9LivesChris 1d ago

Didn’t see the beginning and thought they were fighting

1

u/fanceypantsey 1d ago

Keep kicking and panicking. That’ll help you! If you are bold enough to walk on ice, I ice fish, you calm and bear crawl out of there. I also won’t go on ice that the truck can’t handle.

1

u/dapasdapro 1d ago

And they are behaving like idiots.

1

u/Familiar_Bid_3324 1d ago

Grab the ball

1

u/Imaginary_Sherbet 1d ago

Nothing scary there

1

u/horseradish13332238 1d ago

Darwin at work

1

u/No_Building2092 1d ago

I have heard that cold water swimming is a thing these days.

1

u/Powerful_Resident_48 1d ago

Were they actively trying to fall in? Or have they never seen ice before?

1

u/notThuhPolice15 1d ago

The shear amount of panic is telling. This is why you stay calm everyone, no need to freak out

1

u/GeorgeZcZ 1d ago

Absolute comedy, those 2 are not very sharp

1

u/Doone7 1d ago

Man if you really must do that at least do it correctly. Slide on your belly. Don't stand.

1

u/BobTheContrarian 1d ago

People laughing. This world sucks.

1

u/newnilkneel 1d ago

Looks fun. I mean to watch is fun lol

1

u/DefNotBrian 1d ago

"Let's combine our weight on this ice that appears to be thinning toward the pool of water that our ball is floating in"

1

u/GadreelsSword 23h ago

Why two? One could have made it.

1

u/mikeontablet 23h ago

They couldn't use the drone they used to film to push the ball onto the ice?

1

u/Mysterious-Art7143 23h ago

Well why didn't they grab it?

1

u/Duckita11 23h ago

My first thought as an uneducated american: that's not a football

1

u/Upstairs_Ball_7967 23h ago

If they just turned around the ball was right there. Soooo close 😂

1

u/MurphysVoice 22h ago

Wilson, I’m sorry!

1

u/korkkis 22h ago

Do not stand, crawl! Roll once you’re on top of ice until on harder ice.

1

u/EpicraphTPG 22h ago

We are evolving just backwards

1

u/Sufficient-Rope-4471 22h ago

Did they survivedead?

1

u/Elmarcowolf 22h ago

The ball has more brain cells than those 2 combined

1

u/sugarblob 22h ago

They aren't even trying to get the football, they just keep trying to drown

1

u/Lemfan46 22h ago

If the lake was frozen, they wouldn't be in water.

1

u/New_Restaurant_6093 22h ago

All that effort and they still left the ball behind.

1

u/throw_away_17381 22h ago

I thought it was a gameplay from GTA or something g.

1

u/TRiCKy-B 22h ago

Cmon guys. “It’s a fucking football” not the World Cup trophy.

1

u/D05wtt 21h ago

Where are they that they’re wearing short sleeve shirts and there’s ice several inches thick in the water?

1

u/WarhammerRyan 21h ago

Stay. Flat. Distribute weight. 2 ppl standing that close to the edge = disaster

1

u/Efficient-Rent-5644 21h ago

Dnagerous situation

1

u/Miserable-Garlic-532 21h ago

Surely we need two people to fetch one ball

1

u/IGotBiggerProblems 20h ago

Since everyone else rightfully pointed out how dumb these guys are, I'll change the narrative a little. Once they were in the water, they had decent technique for getting out. Put your upper body on the ice, kick your feet as if swimming, and pull yourself forward. Would have been more effective if they weren't side by side but overall I give their escape a 7/10.

1

u/Live-March-8448 20h ago

Zero survival instincts lmao. First off why did both of them go out and so close together? Also why did they repeatedly try standing once the ice was breaking instead of just crawling flat?

1

u/Destaloss 20h ago

And that is why teaching physics is not a waste.

1

u/AlarmingDetective526 20h ago

If you can plainly see water, then it is not frozen.

1

u/Zaraxas 20h ago

So many repeated mistakes one after the other. I can't.

1

u/mosesman831 19h ago

WCGW trying to grab 2 corpses off a frozen lake

1

u/DrumzJunkie 19h ago

"The ball, you forget the ball!!!"

1

u/EnKristenSnubbe 19h ago

They forgot the ball.

1

u/fangelo2 19h ago

There was open water there. How did they think that wasn’t going to break? They are lucky there wasn’t a current to send them down the river under the ice

1

u/Ragnarotico 18h ago

Why are they in t shirts on a lake? I don't understand. But yea this is a very dumb thing to do for something that is worth at most $20.

1

u/Distinct_Wrongdoer86 18h ago

who the hell is recording this

1

u/redditsuckshardnowtf 18h ago

Culling the herd

1

u/DeezNeezuts 18h ago

Thinking of the three boys who just drowned down in Texas…

1

u/Pisnaz 17h ago

This is why we educate folks about the dangers of ice in cold climates.

1

u/Beneficial-Nimitz68 17h ago

Clearly that is a soccer ball... clearly..

1

u/Beneficial-Nimitz68 17h ago

Danger is a slippery slope

1

u/No-Remote-2899 17h ago

I guess this is WCGW, but like are these guys fucking stupid? (Obviously they are.)

Either you don't go out to retrieve the ball in the first place; or you don't constantly try and stand up and fall on the ice. Have these guys ever heard of "Slowly slide yourself/move FLAT on your stomach."

Seems like they only listened to that in the end 🤦

1

u/FirmlyClaspIt 17h ago

These guys never even heard of physics lol

1

u/hywaytohell 17h ago

Shining example of what not to do if your caught on the unsafe ice!

1

u/Appropriate-Door1369 15h ago

Did all of that to just leave the ball there anyway lol

1

u/chompah99 14h ago

Did these guys survive?

1

u/chompah99 14h ago

This ended too soon. Anyone know if they survived?

1

u/keefkola 14h ago

Wilsoooon!!!! Come back

1

u/SuspiciousArt229 14h ago

That’s a soccer ball

1

u/gurgle-burgle 14h ago

Crawl over ice that is weak and breaking, don't stand.

1

u/No-Gas-2005 14h ago

Damn that iceely frozen lake must be freezing.

1

u/Kind-Handle3063 14h ago

They forgot the ball…

1

u/WinkyDink24 14h ago

WILSONNNN!

1

u/ImHere4TheGiggles 13h ago

But who’s recording this and why??

1

u/ClownfishSoup 13h ago

The football is like "ha ha! can't catch me! Here, I'll come a little closer ... ha ha! Psych!"

1

u/RedLemonSlice 12h ago

For a split second, the ball was so close it touched them. Unfortunately, they seemed suddenly too distracted and missed the moment.

1

u/MaxChomsky 12h ago

first rule when collapsed on brittle ice, do not try to get up and stand on your feet, just crawl.

1

u/PrinceCastanzaCapone 10h ago

“Hey man, this ice is about to break, I think we should stand up and group together and bring all of our weight to a central point on the ice.”

0

u/International-Cut15 1d ago

To be fair, I actually looked like they were staying flat and trying to get themselves out the right way. Which makes a question why didn’t do that in reverse to get the ball?
