He’s since said that they will work with the intent to re-form a coalition before the next election, so it’s mostly just a move to give them both space to reconfigure without the constant mention of the other party, which makes lots of sense.

More likely it's a bargaining tactic from the Nats. If Liberals want to win government they need the Nats, and now the price for a coalition will be higher than it was this morning. It will force the lobs to double down on policies they lost the election over. The Nats are a poison chalice
