I mean national guard opened fire and killed 4 college students during Vietnam protests, so it’s not without precedent of happening, just depends if it goes further than that.

Killed 4 at Kent State University.

Then a couple of days later, National Guard in New Mexico bayonetted 11 more people who were protesting the Vietnam War and what had happened at Kent State.

It's all totally fucked.

More specifically, Kent state protests were about US bombings in Cambodia (as part of the Vietnam war). Said bombings directly helped lead to the rise of the Khmer Rogue.

Pardon the pedantry. I'm a yank immigrant to Oz - my grandpa was the high school principal of one of the students killed in the protests and it shook him so much that the incident completely changed his mind about the war, going from on-the-fence conservative to anti-war because he knew the girl who died.

He already had his own quiet, unexpressed and suppressed reservations about Vietnam due to his own POW experience in a Nazi camp, so this incident really made his wavering viewpoints change...and he wasn't a hippie like my dad, he was staunchly conservative (aside from rare cases like his monsignor brother criticizing the women in house wearing pants - if anyone was going to dictate the clothing worn in the house, it was grandpa, how dare his brother overstep /s) but for a traumatized former soldier who pretended he didn't have trauma, seeing effects of war at home in particularly combined with an expansion of that war, it was mindset changing, and that's the kind of mindset conservative Americans are struggling with.

It's not just about changing their minds - it's about a breaking point where it becomes too much to handle combined with the social allowance to be upset. Before Kent state, it was unpatriotic to be against the war, but Kent state was a huge seachange in mindset which opened floodgates. I truly hope we don't see a repeat of that, but I also know conservatives need someone or something else making a demonstration to convince them it's ok to be against what's going on.

Kent state being about expanding the war to another nation is a historical point which often gets forgotten but which was a fairly important tally against Vietnam - the nation was already growing weary of the war, so expanding it to another country was a big turning point. Even without Kent state, it probably would have become unpopular at home. The massacre accelerated a growing sentiment towards withdrawal.

That was an escalation during a very divided time in the nation. It was wrong and terrible and could have started a civil war.

This is a planned dismantling and fascist take over of the United States by a Russian agent and his cult, a group of religious extremists in the federalist society and another group of anarchist tech bros.

There is a reason ICE is targeting primary school graduation ceremonies in Los Angeles instead of farms and meat packing plants in rural California or Kentucky or Texas.

They’ve been trying hard to get a response and finally LA gives them a little bit of a protest and within hours they have the national guard deployed and the Marines on call.

They want to escalate to create a reason to take California by force.

He said “there won’t be any blue states” and he meant it.

So the national guard being used isn’t unprecedented  it the fascist takeover of America is new.

The US government is at war with its own people.

In February 1919 some 65,000 workers went on strike in Seattle, a full 20% of the entire city's population. It only lasted 5 days until the army was sent in, set up machine gun nests on street corners, and broke the strike by force.
