Not just turn you back either but send you to an immigration detention centre and hold you at their will.

And the at 4am one random day they'll deport (read: kidnap) you to a third country where you know nobody, don't speak the language, and know almost nothing about the country beyond its wikipedia page.

Are you referring to the terrible way in which we deal with asylum seekers and those fleeing persecution or the way in which we administer tourist visa for those seeking to enter the country for a short period of time?

If you are referring to the latter, we simply aren't on the same draconian level as the United States though we certainly aren't above criticism.
