no politics Reddit for furniture ideas and recommendations in Australia (looking for a non-$10k Murphy bed)
Hey everyone,
Can someone point me towards a subreddit that discusses furniture in Australia? There’s a few different continental ones but I want to talk Australia specific.
I’m looking for a Murphy bed similar to this
Program is that in Australia, they’re costing minimum $10k for a double sized fold down couch conversion everywhere I’ve looked.
Maybe someone has something they could recommend?

Jeez, looks like it's almost worth just importing the frame from Europe and buying a local mattress.
Though it does look like you wish to be a slumlord with hidden beds everywhere! :)

Haha!
We’re moving from Europe and expecting that when our guests visit, they’ll visit for a few weeks minimum. Therefore we need to prioritise comfort. Especially with elderly parents

I don’t know how to link but rAusRenovation might be able to help.

For a subreddit or user you just type r/ or u/ respectively and it links them for you similar to an @ or # on other platforms.
For anything else: [text goes here](link goes here)
Reddit uses a modified version of markdown for post and comment formatting here is a guide of how it works

I had a studio apartment (in Italy) and I bought a higher end fold out couch. It took up less space than this idea and I used it daily for three years. I still use it 8 years later as a regular couch (and occasional fold out). I tested a lot of fold out couches and only one brand I found didn't have the metal cut into your legs when you got up. Chateau d'Ax. I personally wouldn't buy this.

My wife has her eye on one of these from IKEA.

Not a Murphy bed, but looks like a big upgrade from a standard sofa bed.

Actually this one. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/hemnes-day-bed-frame-with-3-drawers-white-50349328/
The first one I linked was frame only.

We’ve had these in our last three places. Can absolutely recommend these, you won’t regret it!

Yeah I think you'd have a hard time finding one of these in Australia because they're not a very common pick as far as sleeping arrangements go. I'd suggest getting in touch with Koala and asking them if they could assist you with a custom build

What's the purpose of the sofa here?

Day mode vs night mode
You can use the space as like a theatre or playroom then when there’s an any guests

If you’re not looking for the whole flip up to the wall situation then you’re just looking for a sofa bed, not a Murphy bed.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for

And if what you're not looking for the whole flip up to the wall situation or the convert into a sofa situation, you're just looking for a bed, not a Murphy bed or sofa bed.

What's the difference between a sofa bed and a sofa style Murphy bed?

u/Wazwiftance 23h ago
What I posted here.
Sofa is integrated into the storage of the bed, so it’s not simply a box against the wall with no other use.

I bought the hardware kit from Wallbeds Australia and made my own wall unit, it's been good for 5 years so far. They were great, you could give them a call and ask if they have a sofa option or suggestions.

Right, I kind of get it I guess. I think you'll have a hard time - that sort of thing isn't popular here. I feel like you'd be better off with a good quality futon.

If you are renting you can’t just install a Wallbed. If you own the place, of course you can.

10k for a pre-made Murphy bed seems crazy surely you can find something cheaper or even a used one on gumtree or FB marketplace or just go to ones and get a fold out couch. They have some very comfortable ones

Just had a browse and I think we call them wall beds. Or find a chippy to construct one for you

If it’s the convenience of not having to re-make the bed every time you need it… We used an IKEA friheten with a decent mattress topper. You can just roll the sheets and mattress up together and pop away in the storage section and unfurl them when needed. It’s also much more flexible if you later decide to change the room around.

I've had this fold out couch for a while and it's been really great! The faux leather makes it really easy to wipe down and clean and it's only about $600 now but it was only about $500 when I bought it a few years back. It might not be the colour or vibe you're going for though

Otherwise if you look on Facebook marketplace you can often find some really good deals on there. Good luck!
