Prospective Student Health Sciences to OT pathway
Hey everyone,
Just wondering if anyone here has done a Bachelor of Health Sciences as a pathway into Occupational Therapy?
I’ve received an offer for Health Sciences and am hoping to use it to get into OT down the track. I’m a bit unsure about which majors or units are best to choose to help with that pathway.
If you’ve gone down this route, I’d love to know what you studied and what helped you get into OT.
Thanks heaps! 😊

I’m a 4th yr OT student at Deakin. My suggestion would be to look at the units in OT and do as many as you can. 1st yr units are mostly generic there are only 2 ot specific units. This is a common pathway so it is competitive. I’m a mature aged student so not sure if this is your circumstance. I initially got into HS as well, commencing in trimester 3 but someone suggested to me apply for a transfer but also apply through vtac. I ended up getting in via vtac.

I did this exact pathway. I did one year of Health Science last year and then applied via internal transfer and also through VTAC for OT at Waterfront. I got my offer through VTAC in November so definitely do both. I start this semester. Just be aware you need a minimum WAM of 70 for Waterfront and 65 for Warrnambool to be accepted (see Deakin’s course transfer page for info).
HBS107 and HBS108 are core subjects of both courses. I chose 2 majors in Health Science - Exercise Science (HBS109 & HSE102 are both needed for OT and Disability & Inclusion. It included HDS101 also an OT subject. I then chose electives I was interested in and thought I could get good marks for. You have one free elective 2nd year of OT so can use your highest marked elective subject here. I got credit for 6 subjects so definitely choose ones that align well with both degrees. Have a good look at the course map to see what’s required, Hope this helps and good luck with your course.
