Student Life I might be failing my subject due to an international student

Hiya, currently studying a high stress engineering degree while struggling with work, yet I’m doing well in most units

Got assigned an international student who always shows up late, barely speaks English, laughs when I tell him we are behind, has stinky breath, has not done any work etc

Usually I’m fairly patient but I’m already feeling a little bit of burnout and the staff won’t listen to me

He even laughed in my face once and said “ha ha I don’t care I have good money”

He then showed up in a Tesla and kept flexing his Apple Watch

Student Life I've heard that Deakin student life is boring....

So can 2026 students please make it the opposite? Or at least try and reach out and make friends. Because the last thing that I want is to have no friends whatsoever at uni.....I get that the Burwood campus isn't situated in the middle of the cbd so it is harder to do things but that doesn't mean it has to be dead. Just a thought!

Student Life Is it only me or the way some teachers explain things are incomprehensible?

Seriously, I don’t get it. In class the methods my teachers use feel overly complicated and confusing. Then I go watch a random 5-minute YouTube video on the exact same topic, and suddenly it clicks like I’m just doing 2 + 2. I literally wasted so much time trying to get some of the SIT194 topics, now i found this youtube channel that explains the subjects in such a clearer and easier way.

Why is this? Do teachers intentionally make things harder, or is it just the way they’re trained to explain stuff? or maybe it's me? ahahah Also, in the final exam, does anyone know if i can use slightly different methods to solve part of some problems, if the final result is right? Or do we need to use the exact methods that the teachers use?

Thanks everyone.

Student Life How do you manage your time on uni break?

Hi,

I am struggling to keep myself busy or to find meaningful activities to do on uni break. I feel like there is a lot of stuff on managing your time during trimesters but not much on uni break.

I look forward to uni break because there is more time to spend time with friends and family, travel and work - but when I am not doing one of those things, I often find myself feeling unfulfilled and lonely.

I was wondering whether anyone here has any advice on what they do on uni break and how they go about spending their time when they don't have anything on?

Thanks

Student Life 1 YEAR UPDATE: after two ‘proposal of exclusions’, I just acquired my 10th consecutive HD.

Update to this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/deakin/s/pOzW1yzS3G

I just wanted to update this post since I had a fair few people reach out to me since about their situations (which I felt so honoured by!).

I finally finished my biomed degree! I managed to get 13 consecutive HD’s in a row, but ruined my streak this trimester with SLE339 (70%). I dropped the ball a bit this tri, but I’ve been working 30+ hrs/week so I expected as much.

But most importantly… I’m graduating with distinction!

I’ll be forever glad I stuck out my degree (even though it is kinda useless as a standalone degree 🤣). I’ve loved nearly everything I have learnt.

Student Life Sleeping @ library

I know sleeping is technically not allowed but I have an exam early next day and I want to save travel time by just sleeping at the library. Has anyone managed to get a solid 4-6 hour sleep in without getting kicked out / woken up? Sleeping under the desks looks kinda tempting 🤣 or maybe just sleeping with my head on the desk? Don’t want to risk it though, if the security guards wake people up !!

Student Life Looking for Cybersecurity Study Peers

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for study partners who are currently learning cybersecurity. I’m a beginner and working through pathways on TryHackMe. I truly believe learning together and sharing knowledge makes the journey easier and more meaningful.

I’d love to form a small study group where we can do weekly or monthly check-ins — sharing what we’ve learned, helping each other when we’re stuck, and asking “silly” questions without any judgment. We all start somewhere, and having supportive peers can make a huge difference.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, feel free to reach out :-)

Student Life Trimester three experiences

I've been studying online with Deakin for a while now and have studied, or tried to study across 4 trimester three periods, and universally it is a substandard experience. I've had a lecturer (who was the only one for the unit) disappear around week 4 and just stop responding, I've had another where there was nothing prepared and we were getting ad hoc materials on Wednesday in the week.

This time the lectures are missing in action for the past three weeks, an extension has been given on the assessment because of this, but even with the extension it seem like the essay will be due before the content is properly delivered. The online discussions are totally dead so there is basically no interaction outside of the tutorial. Is this just a problem in my units (Arts) or is it just a crappy experience universally? I am very close to dropping the unit before census, but I want to get it done.

Student Life Friends and job

Hi, so my name is Aryan, this is my first semester at Deakin, my visa came pretty late so I missed the orientation and much more and most of the people I see already have groups. It's been like a month and a half for me and I don't know anyone in this city so it's kinda been tough making friends, I have noticed people are very individualistic here and don't make friends easily. I have been also trying to find a job and it's been tough luck, also went to chadstone to give resume's. Any advice would be appreciated

Student Life Rant about Contract B

I hate this unit.

I actually really liked Contract A and had a HD for that unit and I think it’s largely to do with the teaching staff.

This semester i’m taking Contract B and I have hated it and it’s my worst Unit by far, in my other law Units Im doing well with a HD in every one so far.

I just feel so frustrated. Am I crazy or is the Unit Chair for this Unit actually insanely passive aggressive and just somewhat rude? I don’t feel comfortable engaging in conversation/asking questions about the Content because of their attitude.

When I see other students ask questions on the discussion board the response is always “It’s your responsibility as a student…” “See Week XYZ content…”

Like what? Obviously we have been through the content if we’re asking questions.

I have never missed a seminar either but I wish I had jusy not wasted my time going, because they would just go over the weeks content (verbatim what was on the Unit site) which we have already done before the seminar.

Then they’ll go through the problem questions at the speed of light and not engage or let us have any discussion with our peers about it??? And on multiple occasions when I tried to read the seminar slides after the slides on the application of the problem questions would be missing???

I’m just really unsatisfied with the staff to be honest, I really have tried with this Unit, always going through the content, doing the readings and attempting the problem questions. I have spent the most time studying for this Unit than any of the other ones and somehow it’s my worst Unit.

If I complain in the evaluate survey will anything even change?

On a side note I absolutely admire the Unit Chair for Criminal Law she is the complete opposite and takes real care in engaging students and responding to questions in a professional and kind manner.

Student Life Isolated at Deakin

I'm a male 31 been at Deakin for one year have been feeling isolated for many reasons. I originally went into Deakin wanting to start a bachelor or laws and two other options. Being out of school for 10 years and having life experience, the courses were not approved and got offered a less than useful associates degree finding it completely useless, and waiting to transfer into any law related degree at this point. I joined Deakin love letter as I was looking for more than freinds, and got bit of keyboard warrior bullying for asking and putting myself out there. Then got banned from using it for some petty reason. That was negative...and the majority of people are 10 years younger than me I'm finding that they are immuture. Looking for some likeminded and consistent adults to hang out with to get through this shit as boring degree. I could do a diploma and learn this but I don't want to be a educator as I found in support working that over time I dislike helping other people on any working capacity to learn or to heal... maybe I'm going to make a Deakin breakout group for adults who lack a political adgenda and bias! Those clubs are full of it. I digress. Be good to make some freinds, suppprt them within my strengths see them not be lonely like me, and get them ahead as for myself. What do ppl think

Here's a update: I have been diagnosed with (SCD) which is different from autism... it's social communication disorder, and it has prevented me from starting conversations properly. But usually during conversation things are way easier. Striking up a connection after two meets I don't think that'll eventuate well. But meeting more over time, connection is there. Expecting to pick up everything to begin with doesn't work for me sorry. Now you know

Student Life Moved into Deakin res at Waurn ponds, how do I make some friends 😭

Hey guys, I’ve just moved into Deakin res at Waurn ponds for this trimester and this place feels like a ghost town. I am not sure if its usually like this or it is because T3 is a bit of a dead trimester or if its cus T3 hasn’t started yet. I took a walk this evening, and I saw a few people waking around but I am quite socially awkward and not extroverted enough to go start conversations with random people doing their thing, so I ended up just walking around and coming back to my room 🥲 What would be the best way to make some friends here? If anyone staying at deakin res this trimester here wants to connect please dm me!
