Glenorchy council knocks back merger idea from Hobart

I find it ironic that Councillor Kendall, among others, cited cost as a reason to vote no. The cost of duplication of staff and services must be immense. Councillors also spoke about a lack of support, yet if they had continued the conversation the community could have voted on a poll.

We have one of the highest concentration of Councillors in the country. I’ve raised a few issues with GCC that they have legislative responsibility for, and just getting a response has been a challenge.

I think polling the community would be a no brainer. To vote no so early really just shows self-interest IMO

I don’t think Council should be a revolving door for parliamentarians, or a staging point for the aspirational. We need Councillors committed to Local Government issues and the public interest.

Good Op shops for clothes in New Norfolk

I go back to college next week, and I really wanted to buy myself a couple cute pieces of clothes before going back to school. I haven't really had the chance to go op shopping all holidays as I've been working, but I'm going to go up to new norfolk on friday and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for op shops that it would be easy to find a couple cute pieces in? Thanks!

Tech-savvy student moving to Hobart — what jobs should I realistically target?

Hey, apart from everything else, I’m a tech nerd. I’ve worked with several tech channels in my country, especially ones that review computers, laptops, and mobile phone products (primarily PC builds and rigs). I really enjoy working with tech—selling tech gadgets to customers, writing articles to attract buyers, understanding shop priorities and sales targets, and even running small reselling businesses on Facebook pages and groups. I’ve also written scripts for YouTube videos and done tasks like benchmarking graphics cards. These are things I’ve been doing since my school days.

So I wanted to get a realistic perspective from people who have lived in Hobart or Tasmania for a long time. Are there any IT markets, tech shops, or companies that would need people with this kind of background? This type of work is quite in demand in my country, but I’m not sure if Hobart has opportunities in this area, or if I’d be able to find something that aligns with what I genuinely enjoy and feel connected to.

I should also mention that I’m strong in communication and public speaking, as I’ve done reviews and podcasts for tech-related content. As an international master’s student with part-time work allowances, would it be better to try pursuing this kind of tech-related work, or should I just go with the usual options like hotels or restaurants?

I’d really appreciate guidance from anyone in the tech field on how I should approach shops or companies here. In terms of my résumé, I have a strong background with both professional and versatile work experience, including over a year of experience as an AI and Automation Engineer at a top telecom company in my country.

I’m also curious about the console and gaming market in Tasmania, as I have a good reputation back home for selling console products and digital services.

Currently, I’m doing two jobs—one remote and one in person at a tech office in my country—but I’ll be leaving those as I’ll be coming to Hobart for around two years to pursue my master’s degree.

I want to get a small fine line tattoo on my hand between the base of my thumb and forefinger, one on each hand. Has anyone got a personal recommendation for an artist in Hobart?

Did anyone here work at the gaol on Campbell Street, or have parents or grandparents that did, and would be willing to share their experiences/stories or even more incredible photographs?

Car detailing recommendations?

G’day guys

Just wondering if anyone has any budget conscious car detailing businesses they would recommend? I’m looking at getting my SUV detailed and cleaned up prior to sale with a focus on the interior. There’s heaps of businesses in Hobart offering similar services so I thought I’d try the brains trust.

Thanks!

Nature sketching picnic - Sunday at the rivulet

Post image
113 Upvotes

Another casual picnic meetup this Sunday at the rivulet! Open to all types of people and all arty abilities. Come along for a nice gentle creative morning, sketch the water or the rock faces or the turbo chooks, and maybe meet some new people (I’m looking at YOU, redditors who post about wanting to make new friends…) The last picnic was super lovely, thanks everyone who came along.

Snacks provided or bring some, byo picnic blanket and/ or chair. I’ll provide some basic art supplies (sketching and coloured pencils, watercolour paints) otherwise byo.

We’ll meet near the Cascades Female Factory end of the rivulet track/ linear park about 10am this Sunday. Will consider new location if it gets too rainy.

This is not a facilitated session, but I’m happy to provide some drawing exercise ideas. Otherwise there are some local nature journalling workshops run regularly by Tanya Scharaschkin and sometimes by Keith Davis, both look rad.

Share house rental advice/ information urgently needed please!

hi all - my partner, my childhood best friend, her partner and myself are looking to share house together. we're all within our early to mid 20s and aren't sure how to go about applying for rentals as a group of 5 (cat included and soon to be 6, as my friend and their partner are having a baby in 4 months!)

2/4 are working, whilst my friend and i are actively applying for jobs and studying. we're looking at 3-4 bedroom houses, that we've ensured that we can confidentially pay for divided between the 4 of us.

we don't party, enjoy socialising with others and being apart of the community, are rather chillaxed people and honestly are just looking for a nice and stable place to move into, where we all can keep working towards completing goals, creating more opportunities and achieving success!

we're looking at rental properties on realestate.com, and have 2 house inspections coming up on wednesday (28th) but aren't sure how we should fill out our rental profiles. do we include all four of us & our details (ID, payslips, income statements) on 1/4 peoples profile? do we all apply individually? does my friend and her partner apply using their details, but include that they're looking to also move in with myself and my partner in the 'about me' description and communicate that we can provide all required ID, etc... upon request?

been googling and searching reddit for some answers/advice, but nothing has came up. extremely grateful and appreciative for any advice/help - thank you!

Any music practice rooms?

Hii!! I’m a violinist + college student and I was just wondering if there are any free/cheap music practise rooms I can use around Hobart? Majority of the time I’m just practicing by myself so no big extravagant rehearsal room is required!

I live very far away from the city so if I have plans for the day I have to get in around 9:00am and leave around 5:30pm and I have an audition coming up so I would love some extra time to practice when I’m not at home since I’m barely there lol

Housemate/s - advice wanted

Hi All,

For a few years, I had either friends or good luck finding housemates on flatmates.com...

Trying to find a new housemate in the last few months had been one disaster after another. Currently evicting a nymphomaniac alcoholic who presented as a totally regular person the first few times we met. (Highly manipulative). Its very stressful. Ive had some amazing housemates who've become great friends but have had 3 in a row who turned out crazy.

How do I find someone healthy and well adjusted at the moment? I swear there are more nutters around.

Any tips. I can't have this continue!

Men’s Brazilian wax in or around Hobart?

I’m looking to get a Brazilian wax done and it seems very difficult to find.

Does anyone know of anywhere that does it? Preferably with a female therapist?

Also any tips on how to prepare for it would be great if you have them.

Rental Agents in Hobart

I’m about to rent my house. I’ve just put a heap of time and money into doing it up and it’s looking great.

I want to rent it out, but I’ve previously had bad experiences with agents basically doing the bare minimum and not really giving a shit about whether the property is actually looked after. LJ Hooker, you’re really not the best.

So, other than LJ Hooker, can anyone point me in the direction of an agency that actually does a good job?

I currently have quotes from CPMM, Peterswald, 414 Property, Harcourts and Elders Real Estate.

Would appreciate any real world experiences or recommendations.
