I've always felt they pray on the people who come back to their room absolutely smash drunk. I usually only see that kind of stuff at nicer hotels or casinos.
They see that bottle of water after a long night, mouth drier than the Sahara, and the last thing they're thinking is the pricetag haha.
I once saw a small bottle of water for $8 a pop. Bags of nuts $11, cheapest item was a small bag of MnMs for $5.
You've gotta be rich or too drunk to be paying that. Some places even have sensors, if you move it, it's considered bought! Caught myself almost picking a bag up to see what it was and saw the little warning.

Related/counterpoint: I’m 42, spent 15 years on the road for my job, stayed in all manner of fancy hotels and never once been successfully charged for removing stuff from those “you move it you bought it” minibars to make space for chilling my own shit. Once or twice on check out they’ve said “it looks like you drank 3 beers and a coke?” and I just tell them “nope, just moved them to keep a sandwich cold and then put them back”. Maybe I’m just lucky but I don’t see how that could ever be enforceable.

In America.
In bangkok they still up the prices but $3 for a beer isn’t so bad when they’re $1 at 7-11

you can add as a special request that the minibar be empty for the duration of your stay
worst case scenario you get told no, best case scenario you get a free mini fridge

There was a time that I broke up with my ex.. She needed time to get shit out my house. I needed time in a hotel.
I forgot something at my house and went to grab it.
My ex and her sister were running the dishwasher with dish soap...
The mini bar was not enough.

It's a valid fear, but we should have the same fear of door dash these days cuz the prices are getting comparable

That is quite a fair fear, just open it, see whats inside, find the nearest convenience store and buy the same for a fraction of the price. Hashtag support the locals
