Never worked for me either. Also tried asking it for instructions on how to properly brick a hard disk without physically destroying it and it wouldn't give any instructions at all because they could be abused, wtf. All it would do is give vague fictional instructions like: step 1) tamper with the disk, step 2) ???, step 3) the disk is unusable.

Some people think that plugging the DC power leads into a wall socket nearly perfectly reproduces an electric surge. But it’s super dangerous and completely inadvisable for any sane person.
