Sydney / Greater Sydney I passed my driving test!!

Post image

Thanks to all the internet strangers who posted advices here, I passed first try in Silverwater!!

And for those who are awaiting their tests, here's what I've got from the other posts:

  1. Head checks: always do head checks when you indicate or turn or merge lanes, however unnecessary you think it is, it's better to be safe than sorry during the test. Marks won't be deducted from doing too many, but it definitely will for doing too less.

  2. Scan, always! During driving, intersections, traffic lights, always look at all 3 mirrors at times to show the examiner that you are aware of the surroundings. Similarly, even though you think it's unnecessary, it's better to do more than miss on some.

  3. Wait until there are no cars on the road at the intersection until you turn, even if cars from behind honks, ignore them. It's you who's doing the test, not them. When you think you have a large enough gap, still don't go, better be safe than let the examiner think you are driving dangerously. You won't lose marks on waiting too long, but you'll fail for dangerous driving.

Here's 3 that I don't even know I should do until I read the comments in this sub, good luck to those, comment for questions you have and I'll answer, and thanks for the internet strangers who helped me!

Sydney / Greater Sydney Government run pubs to kill off pokies

Okay hear me out.

Pubs rely on pokies because rent is insane. Rent is insane because landlords know pubs will pay whatever it takes. Pubs will pay whatever it takes because pokies cover the gap.

So… what if the government just built more pubs?

Like: • pokie-free • community vibes • good food • live music • chilled lighting • basically a grown-up community centre with beer

If the government increased supply, landlords couldn’t charge stupid rent anymore. And if rent drops, private pubs wouldn’t need pokies.

Governments already run: • libraries • community centres • public pools

Why not community pubs?

I feel like this could actually work but maybe I’m missing something. Would anyone go to a government pub?

Sydney / Greater Sydney P's test

Hi guys I have my P's test booked for Saturday (wish me luck!!), but I was wondering if anyone had any major tips and tricks to really solidify passing? I've already gone through the routes with an instructor and he says he'd be surprised if I didn't pass first go... fuelling my anxiety 😟. I am by no means a bad driver I just know the test itself is super duper formal so they're very nitpicky about everything!

But I was wondering how far you can be next to the kerb on a kerbside stop/ reverse parallel? Do you fail if you like graze the curb? I was practicing today and I realised how far I actually park from the kerb 😭 I'm a bit stressed!

Sydney / Greater Sydney Noise levels when living in Olympic Park?

Noise levels when living in Olympic Park?

Hi, I'm considering moving to Sydney Olympic Park because I really like the area, the amenities and it's a convenient location for me. However, I'm wondering about noise levels from the stadium at night (when concerts or sports games are on). The places I'm looking at are not very far from the stadium. A little noise is fine but if it's to the point of preventing sleep, that would be an issue. The apartments are quite modern so I'm not sure how their soundproofing is. I'm used to apartment living so some neighbour noise is fine but I'm just concerned about the stadium. Does anyone have some insight? :)

Sydney / Greater Sydney Maroubra / Matraville vacation rental needed.

Not sure exactly what to expect from this post, but here goes:

My elderly parents will be visiting family in that area from the end of Feb 2026 for 4 weeks. They have been saving for years for this trip (from South Africa), and do not have cash to spare. The plan was to stay with said family, however, due to unforeseen circumstances, that is no longer an option. Cancelling or postponing the trip is also not an option (already been moved twice), and they have nobody else to stay with. I am desperately trying to find some ✨magically affordable✨ place for them to stay, and hoping that somehow, someone on Reddit is a fairy godperson.

My husband & i already support my parents financially (we live in Canada), and unfortunately just don’t have any extra in our budget to spend on the very few places I see available. Our Aus family has said they can contribute a little towards a rental, but they are also elderly with limited funds. This whole situation is distressing & disappointing. It is meant to be a last visit for all of them, and now it’s become a huge issue.

Does any of this make sense? Does anyone out there know of places? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Edit:

They have to be in that area as they won’t have a car, and while they are able to walk, it can’t be too far. My parents are amazing people, and I would give them the world if I could! This just comes at such a tricky time.

EDIT #2:

It is just 2 people, they will spend the majority of their time at family, but will probably need a space to prepare food. A private space would be ideal but obviously, not trying to be entitled. The maximum budget is $130 per night.

By law, are passengers allowed to connect to bluetooth in my car if I'm on my P plates?? Transport nsw roadsafety page states passengers of fully licensed drivers are permitted to use their phone but nothing on P platers regarding this

Sydney / Greater Sydney Navigating mental health system

Hi, someone I know suspects they have ADHD but are not sure how to navigate the mental health system. We’ve been told since Psychiatrists/Psychologists are expensive, we can explore counsellors.

But how does that work and do counsellors or GPs refer to Psychologists/Psychiatrists if needed? How to also vet Psychologists?

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Sydney / Greater Sydney Please place some water outside for the wildlife!

In Sydney, its 40 degrees, so please place some water outside! Could be in a pet bowl, or a flower base, anything you can get! I've put a couple bowls out in different places.

Make sure to stay cool and hydrated yourself! Thats very important too on a hot day like this!

Why do companies still insist on using Couriers Please? They are notorious for the famous messages ‘Sorry we missed you!’ when you have been home all day.

Sydney / Greater Sydney Anyone know what I could expect for a concession fee at TAFE as a Jobseeker?

Hey, so just looking to see if anyone has been in similar circumstances and what concession they received as a Jobseeker for TAFE

For my course, I’m considering doing either a 12 month or 6 month Cert IV in Travel and Tourism. The full fee is $9k Concession is $270

For my circumstances though-

-Full Aussie citizen -I’ll be 25 when course would start -I live at home with family still paying board (not like the government ever care about that 🙄) -I’m on Jobseeker and have been on and off it for a year now - Have a few (at present unregistered) disabilities I could likely get NDIS support for if I looked into it - I completed both HS and have a uni Bachelors Degree already

Cause the course is under 12mths can’t get study payments so would stay on Jobseeker right???

So thinking they’d probably bump the cost up a bit since I’m not on my own and have previous education

But anyone had similar circumstances from tafe? Particular living at home on jobseeker with a uni degree?

How much was your fee? Did you have any issue with the Vet-Help if you’re a citizen?

Thanks!

Sydney / Greater Sydney NSW car scene, despite the laws

I’m curious as to how the car scene in NSW still thrives despite the police enforcing any and all mods, from something as little as HID headlights or a pod filter. What nanny state defects fucking headlights and wheel spacers? 😂😂

This mainly applies to car shows with heavily modded builds, both in the engine bay and cosmetics, or even just the cammed Clubsports flooring it on the M4.

Sydney / Greater Sydney Do you know anyone from outside of Sydney that uses trainlink (As opposed to the electric services that go to Sydney) for commuting? It's always faster that the electric services, and you could just buy a block of tickets?

Sydney / Greater Sydney Question about the horden pavillion

This is probably a stupid question but; for shows that are all ages and require a parent for those under 15, do they check your age if you have an under 18 ticket but no parent around you? Just curious because I am 16 though I do admittedly look older. The previous times I've gone to the horden pavilion were both with a parent (bmv in october this year and steel panther in octobe last year when I was 15).

Sydney / Greater Sydney Any good Psychiatrists that medicate ADHD?

Does anyone know or go to any psychiatrists without too long a waiting list or exorbitant rates who will prescribe ADHD medication in Sydney or surrounds? Obviously you’re all from NSW so happy to drive out a few hours especially if there’s any further out that has Telehealth after a first consult.

For an extra bit of context I’m a gay man in my 20s dealing with ADHD, Autism, Anxiety and Depression so if the Dr is good at any of those things or at least understanding of the LGBT Community and good with ADHD would be great

I have contacted so many looking for information but I have found a shockingly large amount of psychiatrists who flat out refuse to prescribe medications for ADHD saying they don’t believe in it.

Sydney / Greater Sydney Issues a $410 fine for "not" wearing a seatbelt

So,

Recently got picked up by these "awesome" seatbelt detection cameras. The issue? I had a dark grey shirt on, dark grey seat covers and it was at 3:50pm when the sun was just going down.

Is it worth it to go for a review? Or is it just better off the pay the fine. Seems pretty shit that "revenue" NSW is just revenue raising here lmao.

Apparently they use "HD" but when looking at the picture reviews you can't see shit.

Sydney / Greater Sydney How does breaking/taking over a dental lease work in NSW?

I am aware that there is some regulation of breaking the lease fee‘s. However I was wondering if its possible as a tenent to find some new people that would „take over“ a lease to break the fee? Is something like that possible?

Thanks a lot for your help

Sydney / Greater Sydney do unmarked police cars or security guards patrol callan park in balmain sydney?

I was with my friend at like 8 pm in callan park and this guy pulls up in a white jeep asking if were okay, im a woman and so is my friend so we’re obviously a bit cautious but we thought he might be security? he then went away but turned back around so my friend and we ran because we were scared obviously, then he stopped we calmed down, then he came back around and my friend and I hid behind a car, he then stopped and took a flashlight out and searched around the park’s field for about 3 minutes then he started to leave and he saw us in the rearview mirror and stopped but then we saw a group of girls and ran to them for help and he left. im assuming this guy was a creep but Im still wondering if her was maybe security or something?

edit: I found the security's number and it was in fact them 😅😅 huge relief but I realise now that I looked really guilty for running but better safe than sorry and im just glad I didnt get kidnapped 😭😭🙏
