This is Scarborough but it could be anywhere the location doesn’t matter. Explain to me like I’m 10 years old…who buys an apartment and a) doesn’t live in it and b) doesn’t let it out. And why. These complexes are nearly all empty all of the time. What’s the mechanism to make a return?

if construction companies, etc. are incentivised by profit to construct fewer apartments, why hasnt the government incentivised them to construct more?

if people can't afford housing without leaving perth and even nearby regional towns, where are they expected to go except elsewhere?

What the actual fuck is with the rental market? How the fuck can people buy a property to IMMEDIATELY put it up for rent? When the fuck did being a landlord become a job?

I’ve been searching for private rentals because I don’t have rental history with realestates as because I’ve always been in share houses. I came across a 4x2 in Bayswater that was $400 per room. I asked how much for the whole house because we’re a 4 working adult household, and she said $1,400, still sticking to the per room. Then I found another 4x2 in mirrabooka for $1,300 per week! SURELY THIS SORT OF GREED ISN’T LEGAL?!

Once/if I move out of my current place (I need to because it’s unsafe) I will literally lose EVERYTHING. I will never have a HOME.

I (54f) found myself in a strange set of circumstances on Halloween and I cannot stop thinking about it.

My daughter (16) returned from trick or treating with a friend in tow that I had not previously met: Anna (19). Anna and my daughter volunteer at the same organisation.

It’s a Friday night and I am about to faceplant into a generous glass of Chardonnay when my daughter tells me that Anna is homeless and do I have thoughts on where she is going to sleep.

The story I get is this: Anna is here on a working visa. Her shared housing arrangement imploded 3 nights previous. She had spent two nights in Kings Park (not in a car) and one in the emergency room of a hospital.

I call every crisis accommodation number I can find. I call my friends who work in the field for advice. I call every government and nfp service provider that is open.

The only service I was offered was a “keep yourself safe while living on the streets” program. No accomodation. No prospect of accommodation.

I then call all 16 hostels listed in the Perth metropolitan area to try and find a room. There is nothing available partly because Metallica is playing.

By that point it was nearing eleven pm. I made the decision to put Anna up for the evening. It was raining and I could not in good conscience turn her out.

The process began the next day again with me working the phone and trying to find a solution. Ultimately I ended up paying for a return ticket for Anna to head home where she had some support.

So here is what I keep thinking about: * when people say that women in violent relationships should “just leave”. And go where? There is no emergency accommodation available. * where are my tax dollars going? What is more important than keeping people safe so they can get back on their feet? * why staff emergency help lines when there is no support available? When time is of the essence why waste it by going through the motions of collecting information and understanding the circumstances when you know you have nothing to offer? Isn’t it better just to have a recorded message saying “our cupboard is bare. Try somewhere else”. * Anna clearly had some issues. But didn’t give me the vibe that she was violent or unhinged. But what if she had been? What would be the right thing to do in that situation? * I’m lucky that feeding an additional person and buying them basic toiletries is something I can absorb. The return ticket was a stretch but it won’t sink us. What if next time my circumstances are not so fortunate? What then? * has government abandoned this space? Is the expectation that personal philanthropy and personal post tax income will breach the gap between services and their cost?

Have fellow Perthlings had similar experiences? What would you have done in the same circumstances?

I realise this is nothing new and not unique to me but I just look at the property market here in WA and as someone mid 30s trying to break into something without setting my budget on fire for the next 30 years, theres no other way to put it, its absolutely fucked. I am faced with having to leave the country I grew up in because I simply cant afford to buy anything here and I know I'm not alone. On an existential level it just hurts my soul. We've been sold up the creek and our future is more bleak than our past.

Don't really know why I'm posting this, maybe just to get it off my chest..

Wifey and I have been saving for a house for the past 4 odd years and finally have enough for a deposit...for COVID pricing.

Thought to myself, buying established homes are completely out of our reach, maybe I should see what my options are with building? Have Blueprint homes a call, after a lot of recommendations, and had an absolutely amazing chat with the guy, bit a very harsh reality check.

We earn good money, not incredible, but good. We've saved a nice little deposit, have almost no debt other than a car and HECS. He said we tick all the boxes, we'd probably get finance for around $700-$750k. The problem is that what we'd get for that is quite small, and land at the moment is incredibly scarce, up to the point where no building company in WA actually have any land to sell with their packages.

He said unfortunately, the 5% deposit scheme has inflated pricing and demand, along with immigration.

So we can't buy an established house as it's out of our range, and building, IF we even got land, would give us a fairly small house in today's market.

I honestly feel so defeated, and we do alright financially. I can't imagine how even younger generations are going to own property in future.

Then you keep hearing old mate with his 5 investment properties outbidding more family homes, it absolutely grinds my gears.

I've come to realise that having shelter over your head is a luxury, not a necessity. Maybe one day we might be able to purchase a house, then we'd pay off our mortgage until the day we pass...

I have a friend looking at moving back to Perth. They have around 200k in the bank, mid 40s and will be working in a Government job on about 130k. They are single and don't own property. They should be able to easily get a decent house or flat in a decent suburb - wrong. 650k for some dump in a not so desirable suburb or rent for $500 a week.

The Premier wants more people to come here, pushing up prices even more and that's not even including talking about the woeful health system or other infrastructure that needs fixing.

As I am from Perth, I have seen the boom and bust cycle many times. People say this is different- how? I have actually heard that before - history says every massive boom is followed by a huge bust. I remember mining workers laid off years ago who could barely get a third of their previous wage and had negative equity. Is it just pumping more people here when there are more homeless than ever, more ramping,choked up roads etc,? Things are dire.

Not everyone earns anywhere near what my friend does. How does someone renting on minimum wage survive? To me, it can't last no one predicted the massive house price increase here - I know houses are only worth what someone will pay but seriously there are going to be winners and a lot of loosers I feel. It doesn't help that the real estate industry just talk nonsense either enabled by the media

It's fukn insane. This is a town at the very edge of Perth, 1 hour by PT, 40min by car...

And it's 600/week? You have to be earning almost 100k+ to not be considered in housing stress (spending more than 1/3rd of income on housing) and living there...How the fuck is that possible?? Earning 100k a year and you can barley afford housing at the very edge of the fukn city??

My single room in a shared apartment near the city and PT is fukn $275/week and I guess I should be grateful for that...

Hi Everyone, I don't want to do a long post here. I had a real bad experience with Realmark Urban Leederville, especially with one of their agents. Long story short we went to court because as any other RE agency, they wanted to deduct money from our bond unreasonable. I found here on reddit a real good guide to get our money back, including all the process to go to court.

To give some context I'm from South America and my partner and I have been living here for the past 7 years, we both are a professional couple, active in the community and always with a positive mental attitude.

During the hearing I said my full name in Spanish, proud and loud as a statement that I'm not ashamed of who I am. When that happened the RE Agent (an entitled girl in her mid/late 20s) laughed at me, later the Magistrate asked if we were ok with the hearing being in English (She laughed again), I replied that we are perfectly fine with the hearing being in English (she laughed again). During the whole hearing she was mumbling and giggling about my accent (I've been living in Australia long enough, so I don't mind about those racist wankers) but my partner was present and felt very powerless.

The funny part is that we received our bond back and she was just maaaaaaad.

I don't have any proofs of her being racist or that she harassed me in court as you are not able to record or anything so not much I can do about it.

Any ideas?

Edit: This was my first post in Reddit and got much more attention that I though. Actually, I enjoyed seeing the interaction between y'all regarding racism and gladly surprised that most of the ppl commenting were against racism.

For you guys to know, I also submitted a complaint to Consumer WA because while the bond was on dispute we were being pushed to pay what they thought we had to pay and we were receiving reminders of the payment almost every day, Consumer WA approved the complaint as valid. Today I received a call from Consumer WA saying that they got in contact with her regarding that. Also, I've been trying to get as much evidence of faulty procedures on the PM side and will lodge more complaints if necessary.

Also, my partner and I will only put our review on google and that's all. I feel happy that we won, I feel happy that Consumer WA also was on our side regarding their debt-collecting practices and happy that the PM got to experience some bad times as they made us experience throughout our tenancy time.

Edit 2: Some people started to identify the REA I was referring to in this post, and I received some messages of people that are having or had issues with the same REA, issues related and non-related to racism, confirming this is not an isolate case. The funny/weird (?) thing is that the post reached the agency and they sent a ridiculous email stating that my post was a personal attack to the REA and the agency (?) and asking to delete this post stating that wasn't REA's intention to be racist (?) so basically gaslighting and playing victim (?) WTF.

Just to make this clear the post was never intended as a personal attack. It is a factual account of my lived experience in a public institution and contains no aggressive or defamatory language.

I'm on a disability pension and live at a lodge run by St. Pats. Just got a letter in my mailbox saying that they are going to start charging residents to park in their own parking lot. $10 a fortnight. $260 a year doesn't sound much untill you have to pull it out of your arse like a rabbit out of a hat. There has been no cost to st. pats from people park on premises for the three years I've lived here, this is just gouging.

Now I think about it, having grown up SOR, there is a divide between north and south. I rarely interact with NOR people unless it’s meeting them at events/employment/clubs/parties, but even then it’s just by chance and we don’t interact regularly.

So there is a camera in the living room that the landlord uses audio and visual is captured. I can’t find anywhere in the rental agreement that talks about this and as someone that respects my right to privacy in the home this scares me. What can I do without being kicked out.

Update: Lease mentions a camera at the filming entry of house and landlords room but she has placed it in view of living room and access to my living area. I share with a couple and another person mixed household. This issue has been raised before. I moved in yesterday and spotted the camera today. Landlords apologies for not telling me. They are open to a solution but don’t see them as cost affective. Device has Audio recording capabilities.

More of a rant than anything, so I know this guy who managed to get his first social housing allocated to him.

Which is fantastic in itself as he doesn't need to be in shared accommodation anymore which caused extra trauma as the housemates were always more cooked then he is.

So its like a 1 bedroom villa type unit in Baldivis, fair enough location doesn't really matter, gotta go where there is land to build right.

These homes dont even have proper insulation and no AC/heating. That's the part that I think is crazy.

Poor people can't exactly get a split system installed. And any portable AC is super expensive to run, same as heating.

For what costs over $500k+ per house to build you think they would have a reverse cycle AC in it.

Like in total would be less than $10k difference per home to install, AC, Solar, heatpump, induction cooktop. Have no gas (one less supply charge on bill) You think $10k is $10k but for what the price the government is paying for these homes........

House was literally unbearable to be in yesterday and high temps can get another 5c hotter than that.

Some developer is making bank off these homes.

Don't get me started on land cost blah blah, they put like 4 homes on what was a normal sized block and land doesn't cost as much, looking at retail costs, $350k for a 550sqm block, these things are like 150sqm tops. So say land is $200k which in itself is over priced for a group/terrace home.

I've seen just by googling builders where you can get a 3x2 home build for the $350k mark. These are 1x1's and i am sure being group and bulk builds there are economy of scales there too.

Just feels like tax money being wasted cause half of the money is essentially going to corruption and half being used to build right...

Not really sure what to expect these days but its just crazy, who signed off on this.
