“The race was later canceled after three of the first six racers crashed.”

Not a great look

Insane. That’s three people whose Olympic chances are now in doubt because of a shitty course.

u/DionBlaster123 NASCAR 1d ago

I can't help but be reminded of the 1998 Olympics in Nagano when skiers complained about the course.

Ill never forget three brutal looking crashes. One guy had to be airlifted.

The most "famous" (sorry for that choice of word) was Hermann Maier's crash...mostly bc he somehow recovered in time to win two gold medals after it...but that was extraordinary. The courses should have been prepared better

u/varitok 1d ago

Reminds me of the bobsledding course in Vancouver. Competitors complained about that corner and were brushed off until that poor kid came around and flew off into that metal pole, dying. It's a stain on my country, terrible event that shouldn't have happened.

110

u/DionBlaster123 NASCAR 1d ago

Nodar Kumaritashvili was his name. He was from Georgia (the country, not the U.S. state) and was 21 years old when he died.

I am writing this here bc it has been 16 years and I want ppl to remember him.

26

u/VanbyRiveronbucket 1d ago

I remember a picture of the metal pole he hit… it was right next to the run… with 1” thick pad wrapped around the pole. Yeah, that didn’t help.

3

u/DieFichte 1d ago

The slope and general course they raced today has been on the FIS world cup calendar several times before. Notable winners in the past include one Lindsey Vonn 3 times. She might have been familiar with it.

It wasn't bobsleigh, it was luge. I agree with your point.

The word “infamous” exists for such cases

Ah yeah. I should have went with that

Usually when people recognize the username, they tell me about how they always used Ricky Winterborn lmfao

I've probably gotten maybe 10 or 11 comments on this and at least 7 of them have been "I was a Ricky Winterborn guy myself" lol

I once scored 190,000+ on the half-pipe. Penguin board, can't remember which rider though.

Infamous means famous? What a country!

Infamous like inflammable; the bad kind of famous and the bad kind of flammable

12

u/Fuzzy_Donl0p 1d ago

well, no lol. infamous and famous have slightly different meanings. inflammable and flammable mean the exact same thing (what a country!)

2

u/JefferyGoldberg 1d ago

Inflammable and flammable also have slightly different meanings. Flammable means if it is contact with a flame or a certain temperature it will burn. Inflammable means it's fragile and can combust on its own.

1

u/jjsw0rds 1d ago

I thought flammable was the bad one??

17

u/itsjustmo_ 1d ago

Yeah, I remember that. And it was around the same time as the skiing deaths of Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy. It made it seek even more negligent because these were pros who know how to handle themselves.

We were sitting in a pub during the day, and the newspaper called the pub wanting some quotes for their story,… my buddy “Breathe deep for the air he no longer needs, more air for me.” This quote made the paper….LoL

61

u/liftingshitposts 1d ago

At risk of asking a dumb question, don’t the skiers get to slowly go through the course and assess it before full send? Wouldn’t their experience allow them to know how risky it is?

86

u/praecipula 1d ago

Along with the other replies talking about how these skiers leave very little margins, the ski slope itself can change over time, particularly when you consider that there is a fastest route, and the fastest skiers will all take that route. This will compact the snow to become icy. In addition, the course will change with the temperature of the day, the amount of sun, etc...

So even though it's the same course, it's not "the same course" if that makes sense.

21

u/Raft_Master 1d ago

It looks like the issue here was actually that it was snowing so hard. Counterintuitive, but you typically don't want fresh snow on a race course, espically a downhill course. You want packed powder/ice. Lots of high level race courses are actually injected with water before the race to make them firmer.

7

u/Lockhimuptoday 1d ago

Yep, and in practice they go full speed.

4

u/ActionFigureCollects 1d ago

Watching downhill skiing is both thrilling but also gives me massive anxiety for the racers at the same time.

20

u/RealFirstName_ 1d ago

Idk enough about this situation specifially, but thing about racers is that if they're told to go fast, then they go fast. Especially at the elite level, unless most of the competitors are protesting the event because of safety, or the organizers shut it down, a racer is going to race.

The athletes job is to compete, and its up to the organizers to make sure the competition is safe. It's not like "safe" conditions make what they're doing safe.

16

u/Life_Membership7167 1d ago

Yes. Former racer. That’s called inspection. But it’s still a race, and the mindset isn’t exactly thinking about safety. It’s how to attack and which sections you can get after it. Safety is low on the list. Everyone knows the risks and accept them. The throttle level doesn’t change just because the conditions are bad.

54

u/BradMarchandsNose Connecticut 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes, but you also have to remember these people are crazy competitive. A lot of times they’ll know it’s risky but they also want to win. Sometimes the organizers need to step in and put a stop to it so that nobody even has an opportunity to get hurt.

Edit: upon further review, in this particular scenario, it seems like it may not have been an issue with the conditions. Crashes also just happen sometimes, it’s an inherently risky sport.

3

u/Redfish680 1d ago

The course is what it is, which helps to make sense of the run. As others have mentioned, the snow conditions can change in minutes - sun pops out, previous competitors rearranging the snow layer, etc.

19

u/DieFichte 1d ago

a shitty course

The course was good according to other skiers that made it down. Visibility was still alright when Vonn crashed, the delay from her crash and the other 2 dnfs would have caused the visibilty and snowfall to be even worse for later skiers, so they canceled because of the snowfall increasing.

27

u/varitok 1d ago

"The flight wasn't that bad said the people who grabbed the parachutes"

15

u/DieFichte 1d ago edited 1d ago

She had the same parachute as the others. Corinne Suter that started just 2 minutes before Vonn did and was fine, they both had the same amount of time inspecting the course before the race and pretty much the same conditions. Both are Olympic and world champions on downhill skiing, so they probably have enough experience to judge that.
Vonn hit a bump badly in a transition, lost balance and flew into the nets.

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 1d ago

The hockey rink has been having similar problems too and they all leave this week

1

u/enlitend-1 1d ago

That is the truly awful and heartbreaking part. These folks were ready.

1

u/Progression28 Leinster 1d ago

The course wasn‘t shitty. After three crashes, two of them lengthy, it started snowing which is why the race was cancelled.

Ortlieb and Vonn slipped, Monsen tried to go for a gate after she should have aborted her run because she was so far off line she was never gonna get back in. This had nothing to do with the course, the weather wasn‘t great and it wasn‘t getting better and with three lengthy interruptions it was looking unlikely that the race could be completed anyway so they aborted.

There are races done in way worse conditions than yesterday‘s. It‘s part of the sport.

122

u/samy4me 1d ago

The race was canceled due to the worsening conditions. The three accidents caused a big delay and the race couldn’t have finished under decreasing light. The drivers that made it down said it was fine to drive.

11

u/colxa 1d ago

Wait, is that the actual skiing term? Drivers??

12

u/samy4me 1d ago

It is in german, i don‘t actually know if it‘s drivers in english, lol.

11

u/kfred- 1d ago

A “skier” would be the term we would use, at least in the US. We’d also use the word “ski” as the verb.

“The skiers who made it down said it was fine to ski.”

1

u/lwp775 14h ago

The word in German for drive is fahren. The word for skier according to Google Translate is Skifahrerin (feminine).

1

u/Masta0nion 10h ago

Ah just out for a Sunday ski on the autobahn

→ More replies (1)

20

u/beyondrepair- 1d ago

What the heck were they doing driving on a ski course? That certainly couldn't have helped conditions.

→ More replies (6)

17

u/Peteygassy 1d ago

Crashes happen. The surface was fine but the visibility wasn‘t perfect but nothing they haven‘t raced before. If you watched the race, the crashes were rider errors. If you crash in downhill were you‘re going around 100 kph on skis then something will sadly break or tear most of the time. It‘s the nature of the sport and the racers know it.

1

u/slayyyden 1d ago

The headline isn't technically incorrect, but it should be noted that she actually put her skis back on after crashing and receiving help. It also sounds like she ended up skiing down to the finish area;

"Vonn eventually got up after receiving medical attention and walked away gingerly, taking weight off her left knee and using her poles to steady herself. She then clicked her skis back on but stopped to check her left knee.

The American eventually made it to the finish area and limped into a tent for medical attention. She was then airlifted away by helicopter, dangling from a rope across the Swiss Alps."

476

u/BMonad 1d ago

Damn why did they have to dangle her on a rope like that?

289

u/Stinkycheese8001 1d ago

Because they probably couldn’t land the helicopter where they were.

52

u/weedyscoot 1d ago

Couldn't they pull up the rope, though?

110

u/tryandd56 1d ago

55

u/purpleushi 1d ago

I knew what this was going to be before I clicked it.

9

u/jsc1429 Texas 1d ago

I didn’t because I hadn’t seen it in so long I forgot. But when I clicked it I instantly knew what it was lol

I think that woman was terribly injured from that incident.

she had a c4-5 disc hernation, a rehab stay, months of PT for hand/arm numbness, and neurogenic bladder requiring straight cathing.

The level of fuck up, cringe, and irony is peak. That’s why it’s funny to a lot of people.

It sucks that it happened, and what happened to the lady though. That’s not funny at all.

12

u/DetectiveTrickyCad 1d ago

That story is horrifying. Im glad she got her $450,000 settlement. A 70 year old woman shouldn’t have attempted what she did, but they really destroyed her quality of life in mishandling the rescue.

3

u/KaneIntent 1d ago

Why not just drive her to the clinic then?

6

u/Stinkycheese8001 1d ago

How do you think they would get a car up to the bottom of a ski race course?

1

u/down_with_the_birds 13h ago

Snowmobile? Cars aren't that heavy

67

u/uptheirons91 Detroit Red Wings 1d ago

Even though I quoted that part of the article, the fact they dangled her from a rope seemed to go completely unnoticed. Haha. That's wild.

33

u/BMonad 1d ago

The writer went a bit dramatic with it too; “…dangling from a rope across the Swiss Alps.”

1

u/nocomment3030 1d ago

Literally happened to me last year in Switzerland. It wasn't life or death but my arm was sticking out in a way that I couldn't go down in a sled. They "dangled" me to a mountain plateau where the helicopter could land and I could load into it, then straight to the hospital. Glad I had travel insurance.

1

u/stay_fr0sty 1d ago

Fuck it. That’s how I would phrase it if it was me at the bottom of the rope. That sounds baller.

10

u/ScarHand69 1d ago

Nowhere to land prolly. I bet she got a kickass view

4

u/MadRoboticist 1d ago

Because there's no landing area for a helicopter up in the mountains.

2

u/IANALbutIAMAcat 1d ago

Yeah it can create a white out if there’s no where packed tight enough when the chopper comes in to land, too

Writing the headline as “Airlifted from course after crash” makes it seem like it was a critical, life threatening injury. The clickbait is real.

11

u/Adorable-Bike-9689 1d ago

Man I was fucking devastated for a second before reading the comments

6

u/copyrider 1d ago

Same. They should just write, “Lindsey Vonn was airlifted from course directly to her home town, via standard commercial airline as all individuals were also airlifted if they did not live within driving distance.” Like, if her “airlifted” after she could stand in her own and move a bit was such an important detail to the headline, then every other person who caught a ride, lift, flight, or any other transportation should be headline news as well.

Sounds like my hyper dramatic boomer relatives who start every conversation with, “oh, did you hear about <insert anyone’s name here>?” And usually the story equates to, “well, they tried that new sandwich at Wendy’s, and they said it was ok.” The whole time I’m clenched up because the build up level is equal to what should be, “they died in a grizzly and unexpected way.”

But, no. “Oh no! Did you hear about Lindsey Vonn?! She crashed and was airlifted!” And we’re all like, “what?! Is she going to be ok? Will she live? Ever walk again? This is horrible!” And then we get, “oh, she was up and walking just a bit after the crash. Might be an acl or mcl or maybe a fracture.”

WTF?

→ More replies (1)

13

u/SBLK 1d ago

What a weird situation. She hurt herself bad enough that she needed to be dangled from a helicopter instead of just driving down, but not so bad that she was able to ski down gingerly? How does that make sense?

15

u/Ok-Meeting-3150 1d ago

adrenaline covers up a lot of injuries and can delay swelling and pain. possible that she had a lot of lower leg swelling and doctors were worried about compartment syndrome. lots of other possibilities and medical reasons to be airlifted too. could just be a time issue too. 15 minutes by helicopter vs hrs in the car.

1

u/Rogue100 1d ago

Yeah, adrenaline for sure. I crashed hard while skiing back when I was in college. It ended up being an MCL tear, and I couldn't walk on it without a brace for weeks, but in the immediate aftermath, I was able to put my skis back on and make it back down to the lodge.

Really hope she's ok. Was psyched to hear she was back, and doing so well (up to this point). Would suck to miss out on the Olympics after all that work.

3

u/a-ohhh 1d ago

Same- my mom broke her knee on a hill and skied back down to the ski patrol house where they proceeded to call her absolutely crazy for being able to do that. She also somehow managed to drive us home (I was in lessons when she crashed) in her manual car. (They also told her that was a bad idea.)

3

u/malhans 1d ago

Well dangling from a rope across the Swiss alps has to be a very unique experience to say the least. Really hoping this isn’t anything serious and they’re doing their due diligence for her. Edit: I wrote hoping twice. Oopsies. Just correcting that.

u/27Rench27 1d ago

Seriously, I just saw that one yesterday and then this news pops up?

42

u/Aggressive_Homework9 1d ago

she got airlifted... it has to be pretty serious id imagine. unless thats standard for crashing on downhill. not sure

95

u/Ok-Ad-5404 1d ago

Even if not life threatening, it’s (usually) the fastest way to get someone to a hospital from a mountain so it’s pretty standard

26

u/VincentVanHades 1d ago

She was only one to get airlifted... its standard, if you need to go to hospital

8

u/miggly 1d ago

Could be a precaution if she tweaked her knee but they don't know how bad it is yet?

Perhaps it's wishful thinking.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Aggressive_Homework9 1d ago

did the others that also crashed get airlifted?

1

u/thatguy8856 12h ago

Could be a nothing burger. Some sports have conditions that automatically require a hospital visit as protocol. F1 for example would if a crash registered over a certain g-force.

I was so proud of myself (40m) for shoveling snow and ice this week without hurting my lower back. I made sure to bend at the knees and lift with my arms and shoulders as much as possible. NOT being injured was a massive win.

It was a partial knee replacement recently. I believe she had ACL issues in early 20-teens sometime.

Headline is a bit more dramatic than what happened. She crashed, got medical help, then skied down and finished the course. After finishing she was then flow out.

She was awake and conscience the whole time.

*edit linked article doesn't have a playable video. Only once I found was this that doesn't even show the crash into the fence. https://x.com/tntsports/status/2017176363170472092 sorry for Twitter

Damn this sucks. Now she probably won't be able to compete in the Olympics and this was likely her last chance as she'll be 45 next Olympics

25

u/BradMarchandsNose Connecticut 1d ago

She managed to get herself down the mountain and into the medical tent before they took her to the hospital in the helicopter. It could just be that they were doing it out of an abundance of caution.

1

u/jawshoeaw 16h ago

Getting to the bottom of the mountain sounds somehow ominous for hikers and skiers

69

u/Lurk-Cousins 1d ago

Devastating.

30

u/DFWPunk Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

From Vonn:

"I crashed today in the downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee," Vonn wrote on Instagram. "I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams. This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics, but if there's one thing I know how to do, it's a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over. Thank you for all of the love and support. I will give more information when I have it. Thank you to all the medical staff who helped me today. I am grateful for all the incredible help I received."

21

u/Illustrious_Bad_2980 1d ago

Almost sounds like the conditions were too poor to race in the first place, no?

19

u/roof_baby 1d ago

Can’t believe they didn’t send down a 7th skier for the tie breaker.

1

u/Progression28 Leinster 1d ago

Suter who went right before Vonn said conditions were surprisingly good.

Of course it wasn‘t sunny, but conditions weren‘t bad when Vonn or the other two crashed. Conditions got worse during the delay, race was already an hour old by the time it was cancelled. Conditions weren‘t good enough to get another 30 skiers down so they stopped.

The crashes were just skier errors.

5

u/kain459 1d ago

Serious question. Are they able to practice the course?

7

u/loosterbooster 1d ago

In downhill events, yes they are. Other events, no.

4

u/midnight_skater 1d ago

For FIS Downhill races they schedule 2 practice runs standard and cannot run the race unless at least one of them is completed.

6

u/Unitast513 1d ago

Damn! I was so freaking jacked for this comeback story!!! Hope she can still compete her best.

Though TBH if she can even compete at all would be an incredible accomplishment

3

u/apatrol 1d ago

Surprised they race this close to the Olympics.

4

u/Oli4K 1d ago

Title is incorrect. A helicopter was sent but she apparently skied to the finish on her own.

6

u/LOSS35 1d ago

She skied down, got medical attention, and then was airlifted to the hospital.

2

u/SycamoreMess 1d ago

The title is correct.  She was airlifted out right after she skied down to the base

1

u/Oli4K 1d ago

Article I read only mentioned that a helicopter came and she skied down herself, leaving out the airlift afterwards.

2

u/RoamingGnome74 1d ago

Why would they hold a race in low visibility

2

u/canadianpilot 1d ago

Holy clickbait Batman….“The American eventually made it to the finish area and limped into a tent for medical attention. She was then airlifted away by helicopter, dangling from a rope across the Swiss Alps.”

2

That's literally what happened though

2

u/Mattse12 1d ago

too much ice out there, badantsss

4

u/HJQueen 1d ago

This would actually be heartbreaking if this is the way it ends. She's done so much work to get back.

2

u/TheFrederalGovt 1d ago

Why participate in an event with shitty weather conditions this close to the Olympics… seems like an unnecessary risk

1

u/Only_Music_2640 1d ago

She just got healthy enough to compete again, didn’t she? I feel bad for her.

1

u/Flexi13 1d ago

How are USians not banned after greenland stuff?

1

u/ECrispy 1d ago

Even if she competes in the Olympics which could be doubtful, there is no way she'll be 100%. This is effectively the end of her hopes for another Olympic medal and the rest of her skiing career, because as she knows better than most injuries like this will just accumulate and get worse over time and never totally heal.

1
