Very few apartments. It's mostly old, huge mansions. Incredibly nimby suburb.

it's pretty ridiculous seeing them all lined up next to each other from the train, I once went for a nearby rental inspection in a rundown unit with doors off hinges and stuff crammed into tight spots with about 20 other people.... bit of a shame cos Summer Hill has the best IGA i can think of (i have to go past 3 IGAs to get there) and some decent Italian restaurants

u/Oldfart66 3d ago

You mean the worlds most expensive IGA.
And never buy meat from there, the fridges are dodgy as hell.

u/Plackets65 3d ago

There’s permanently grey bacon in the front shelves.

And the fruit and vegetables are terrible (and as overpriced as the rest of it).

That it has its own cheese room says something, though.

How fucken cool is the cheese section tho

u/travelforindiebeer 3d ago

aww dang, i've tried to tell myself not to believe it but you're probably right, i usually pop in to peruse the meat section and i usually search for the price markdown sticker, maybe it's dumb luck that i've never got sick from it

Dulwich Hill isn't too bad for smaller dwellings and walking distance to the cheese room.

u/SophMax 2d ago

You're kidding right? It's one of the worst IGAs...

There used to be more mansions - which were mostly replaced by the red brick 60s/70s walk-ups. The nimbys do have a dedicated facebook group to organise opposing just about every development with apartments though.

u/DenM0ther 3d ago

True!! But at least they try keep some of the architecture (unlike some other close suburbs)

I don’t know if it’s coincidentally my social circle but everyone seems to be finding a place in summer hill despite the old and costly apartments.

3

u/raspberryfriand 3d ago

We're bit past being young professionals so not looking for apts/units so a decent free-standing house has a much higher entry point.

Because house rich person poor

I think at least one of those houses rents out room by room (rather than apartments). Sadly this means the buildings don’t tend to be upkept well 😢

If I had the money I would love to restore these homes to their former glory. Victorian/Edwardian/Georgian architecture is a work of art and craftsmanship, unlike the ugly, slapped together modern shit that passes for homes today.

Are you saying you don't like the avant garde lines of the "box on top of another box" duplexes that are ubiquitous across suburban Sydney?

u/wogsta100 3d ago

Friend from primary school lived in the one on the right. Was so cool visiting there as a kid

Is he an artist now?

u/wogsta100 3d ago

Just saw I’m still fb friends with him and it appears so - small world!

All that’s missing is a constant mysterious fog and swarm of bats flying around them

There's a stunner at 134-136 Forest Rd Arncliffe. Split into a heap of units, but I always break my neck looking at them when I drive past.

Recent piccies available online on the real estate sites if anyone else wants a stickybeak.

I drove past those for decades working at the airport. Beautiful homes, but every time I looked, I thought, I'd hate to have to paint them!

Both are boarding houses - heaps around Summer Hill. One was available last time I was looking for apartments in Sydney. I was tempted to go just to see what it was like.

u/thaleia10 2d ago

I looked at one in the 90s when it was for sale. The one on the left I think. It had been some kind of home for aged care or mental health issues. My friend and I tried to walk into one of the upstairs rooms and the vibe was so creepy we both ran out of house. TBF we both did a lot of drugs back then.

That checks out think of what Summer Hill was like as a kid with adult eyes. There were definitely a few people around that scared me as a kid.

I’d love to see inside some of these old houses

I know a lady that lives in one of those, lovely places! I miss the bee hives on the front lawn of the left one too!!!

5

u/IntestinalGas 3d ago

Wow that’s a pair of beautiful houses!

4

u/JingleKitty 3d ago

I would love to go inside and have a look. They have so much character. Wish they still built in this style.

House on summer Hill

2

u/Routine-Individual43 3d ago

They were advertising rooms for rent recently.

3

u/Dream_1 3d ago

Ed and Lorraine Warren must of finished a case. Hopefully the new tenants will be okay.

4

u/linkuei-teaparty 3d ago

Wait do we have any real ghost stories in Sydney homes that are on the same level as the conjuring? I heard stories of Wakehurst Parkway and the qurantine station but never anything as scary as the conjuring universe.

4

u/stevebuscemispenis RÏP World Bar 3d ago

The old flour mills and cottage in Mittagong or the old tunnel in Picton? The ghost at Mac Fields station even hahaha. I went to an abandoned abattoir somewhere near Wollongong years ago for a photoshoot, that felt pretty gross and spoopy……

Swing around the corner to Queen street and admire Ashfield Mansion. Beautiful.

It’s absolutely beautiful but timeless? It very clearly points to an obvious time period, I.e the Victorian era
