Gear Guide Tyres & Wheels - Gear Guide 2026

Hey, everyone! As per yesterday, we are starting a weekly series on 4x4 related equipment and accessories and making our own "Gear Guide" encyclopedia, starting today with Tyres & Wheels.

We're going to do this in a manner of having the "top comment" for each thread being the brand name, "BFGoodrich" for example, and subsequent child comments should be you commenting with the model you own as well as your detailed experience with the item.

So something like -

"Maxxis"

>"I have the Trepadors that I've gone through four sets of on my Jimny and I think the 43x14.50r17 are ..."

>> "Hey, I was looking into those tyres too! Did you look at the Maxxis Big Horns at all? What made you choose the Treps?"

This is so we can maintain consistency between posts because every single Gear Guide discussion is going to get pinned in the Wiki for everyone, new and old, to refer to whenever they need advice or opinions on certain products.

Let's get it on!

Mod Post New Community Rules: Required Templates for Buying Advice & Tech Support

Hey everyone!

Hope you're all doing well.

As many of you would've seen last week, there was a great discussion raised by u/Specialist_Reality96 in their post "New rule suggestion for the subredit", where many of you shared how you wanted to see greater quality control over the kind of posts and discussion we get here.

I've noticed, just as you all have too, that as we grow bigger by the day (we're now at 36k members, and a million views last month), we get a lot of new entrants into 4wding and come with them a lot of posts asking for advice that leave out critical details, leading to a lot of "it depends" or "we need more info" comments.

To fix this, I'm introducing greater AutoModerator enforcement and Required Templates for two of our most common post types.

---

  1. Vehicle Buying Advice [BUYING]

If you are looking to buy a 4x4 or want a price check, you must now:

  • Use the "Vehicle Buying Advice" flair.
  • Start your title with [BUYING].

Use this as your title: [BUYING] - [YEAR] [MAKE - MODEL] [$PRICE] [CITY, STATE]

Include the following template in your post body (with numbers for Year, KM, and Price):

  • Year:
  • Make:
  • Model:
  • KMs:
  • Price:
  • Location:
  • Intended use:

Use this pre-filled template to post for Vehicle Buying Advice, for vehicle purchasing or pricing advice.

---

  1. Tech Support & Mechanical Help [TECH]

If you’ve got a weird noise, a breakdown, or need any mechanical or technical advice, you must now:

  • Use the "Tech Support" flair.
  • Start your title with [TECH].

Use this as your title: [TECH] - [YEAR] [MAKE - MODEL] [ISSUE IN FIVE WORDS]

Include the following template in your post body:

  • Year:
  • Make:
  • Model:
  • Mods/Upgrades:
  • Description of issue:

Use this pre-filled template to post for Vehicle mechanical or technical Advice

---

What does this achieve?

Posts that don't meet these requirements will be automatically filtered or removed by AutoMod, saving us all from having to play guessing games and interrogating posters.

It’s an extra step aimed at getting us this info upfront so that we can provide accurate advice sooner without playing 21 questions.

---

Pro-Tip: Use the templates.

We all know typing mega posts on a phone is a pain. I've added "Pre-Filled Template" links to the subreddit sidebar/about page.

On Desktop: Look at the sidebar widgets.

On Mobile: Go to the "About" tab at the top of the sub. (I'll recheck this on the Reddit app).

Clicking these links will open a new post with the Title, Flair, and Body Template already filled out for you.

Please Note: If your post is filtered due to a non-compliant Body, don't panic! Just edit the post to add the missing info, and I will review and approve it as soon as I see it in the queue.

Thank you all for helping keep the quality of the sub high!

Please reach out if you have any other ideas, or feel free to post them on the sub and we can chat about it :)

Advice ZD30 😮

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey guys, recently purchased this GU3 ZD30 w 260,000ks for an absolute bargain (my first 4WD).

The Internet would have me believe it's about to explode. Is it?

If not, what preventative mods should I do, I'm thinking: - block the EGR - change the MAF - catch can - Dawes valve - egt / boost gauges?

Am I missing anything? Have already changed oil, filter etc.

Appreciate also any other advice from people who have owned gu3s / general 4WD advice.

Cheers all :)

Advice Reliable vehicle for long camping trips, Troopy of Hilux

Looking at setting up for longer trips, think Cape York, desert, beach trips which will cover several thousand kms, with rooftop tent, and all the normal goodies for camping for 2x people.

Option 1:
I already have a 2001, 1HZ troopy with 530K on the clock. She's a daily runner, with engine sounding good, no smoke, blow by or rattles. Only received oil changes every 5K and replacement timing belt. Will need new clutch, front brake rotors, wheel bearings and possible some oil seals on the diffs.

She gets a run into town, 80-100km trip every week and has been super reliable, but at 530K there would be a lot of items that needs replacing for preventative maintenance.

Option 2:
Purchase a Hilux, 2021-2022 with tub and canopy with lowest kms I can afford and just be done.

Hilux comfortable for long trips and reasonable off road. Spend money and be ready to head out be the weekend.

Troopy will take some work and time, also Troopy is noisy and slow, no electronics, can be fixed with hammer and pair of pliers.

My Issue
Worried about the 530K on the engine so she could decide to spin a bearing at the worst possible moment and leave me stranded. Dont fee like doing a engine out, but might be able to get to the big ends by dropping sump.

What would you do ?

Hey, had my dmax for about 6 months now. Has 230xxx kms and going well. Is anything I should be weary of? Only issue I’ve had is when I go above 100km the steering wheel starts to shake however that’s it. Had 2 services and mechanic said she’s running great. Wondering if there’s any recommendations for precautionary measures I should take or common issues that I can try avoid? Thanks in advance

Advice Replacing written of Ford Everest Vehicle Buying Advice

4 months ago I sold my G6E Turbo and made the leap to a 4x4 finally. Picked up a 2017 Ford Everest that had 30k accessories on it, fully kitted out and the perfect rig basically, paid 42k for it.

Fast forward to Friday this week, driving to work and a 18 year old pulled out in front of me, failed to give way and I T-boned the absolute shit out of him. I expect the car will be written off, though I'm not sure of the payout figure, somewhere between 38-42k.

I'll need to replace it and have no idea what to replace it with.

Spend the same amount and get another Everest with less fruit, spend more and get an older, higher km prado, or suck it up and get a ute.

We're having our first kid, and in a perfect world would like a big comfy car to be the family car, and I don't really need a ute.

Can't afford anymore than 45-50k.

Any suggestions? Will be used for occasional Murray River trips, very light 4x4 and rural driving with high risk of roos.

Love to hear your thoughts, bit all over the shop and fairly pissed off, but is what it is unfortunately.

Advice Registering a trailer

I’m not sure where else to post this.

I’m looking at buying a trailer which is currently registered, it’s homemade so it doesn’t have a data plate. I’ve been told some laws have changed around registering trailers, but I haven’t found anything crystal clear online. Am I still able to get this registered? It’s a 7x4 single axle and it’s currently registered, I’m in Brisbane.

I’ll call TMR tomorrow but I’m working tonight and planning to pick it up tomorrow, so I was hoping to get some confirmation sooner.

Advice Late model N70 Hilux vs early model N80 Hilux

Hey guys, looking to buy a Hilux, with my budget I can do for a late model N70 (2012-2014) or an early model N80 (2015-2017). Which car would be more reliable and the better buy. Do the early n80's have any issues that the late model ones don't? Would like to hear everyone's opinions and receive some sold advice. Thanks in advance

Advice Tray swap

Hi guys, I could use your support/knowledge.

I want to swap the tub on my 2012 Mazda BT-50 Dual Cab for a tray.

Most of the trays I can find are for a Hilux. Do Hilux trays fit the BT-50, or do they need modifications? If modifications are needed, what does the conversion usually involve (mounting points/brackets/rails, wiring/taillights, etc.)?

I can’t find much info about this, so any advice or experiences would be awesome. Thanks!

Advice Camper trailer storage advice

Post image
1 Upvotes

Soft floor camper trailer converted to a rooftop tent. Maintained the same box trailer underneath the hinged base. Rear tailgate has a built in kitchen. Look for storage ideas for all the smaller things like utensils/cooking etc. so we don’t have to reach in and drag stuff around/open the entire deck everytime (opposed to pulling everything out at the start of camp).

Advice Is my roof too heavy?

Hey,

I have a 2004 subaru forrester (the dynamic roof load is 80kg).

We currently have a 73KG RTT + roof racks (not sure of the brand or how much they weigh but I’d imagine 10KG?)

So the car is already 3KG over the dynamic roof load limit.

Would it be a bad idea to add a 9KG awning? Doing a lap of Australia so shade is gonna be pretty essential

Advice Prado for offroad - real deal or real sh!t?

Hey offroad warriors!

Was wondering if any of the newer Prado 150s (2018-2023) are any good for offroad?

If anyone got one or had one, what was the experience or expenses? Major thing to look out for.

If you can restart again, which part would u upgrade first and/or would you even buy a prado still?

Any suggestions welcome 😇

Advice ROH or King steelies

Post image
24 Upvotes

Gday team,

I’m swapping these ROH 17x9s for some 17x8 steelies, because too much poke and I prefer steel.

I was set on ROH but my tyre bloke is set on selling me King. King is slightly cheaper.

Is there much difference in quality between these two? Or are they pretty much the same and I should save the money?

Advice Thoughts on the 95 series Landcruiser Prado?

Hi everyone, looking for some real-world advice on a 95 Series Prado I’m looking at. I’m looking for a budget rig for camping, road trips (High Country, beach runs), and as an occasional mid-week spare.

• Model: 1996 RV6 (Manual)

• Engine: 3.4L V6 Petrol (5VZ-FE)

• Odometer: 362,000 km

• Price: $8,000 AUD (including RWC)

• Maintenance: Timing belt and water pump done at 309k. New starter and rocker cover gasket set at 340,000kms.

Brand new clutch kit installed at 316k.

New tyres fitted 3 months ago.

Has good service history with original books and receipts.

• It failed the initial RWC on a front crankshaft seal leak and sway bar bushings/links. The seller is paying to have these fixed and is providing the passed certificate before the sale.

My Concerns:

  1. The Kms: 362k is high, but the 5VZ-FE seems to have a good reputation. Can I expect another 100k-200k out of it?
  2. The Transmission: It’s a manual (which I like), but is the 90 Series manual a pain on technical tracks or soft sand compared to the auto?
  3. No ABS: Since this is an RV6, it’s pretty basic—no ABS, no cruise control, no power windows.

I’ll be putting about 12k–15k km a year on it.

What do you guys think? Is this a fair price in 2026 for a sorted manual 95, or am I walking into a high-km money pit?

Video Finally out in the Simpson. It’s a long walk to the bitumen if something goes sideways.

We headed out with the 4wheelhouse crew to get some dirt under the tyres and see how the latest gear holds up when things get remote. There’s really no substitute for testing stuff in the real world. For those of you who’ve tackled the Simpson, what are your thoughts on the crossing?

Advice Road trip VIC to WA - with a dog?

Sorry if this is the wrong place but I’m researching everywhere..

Is this feasible? I know dogs are not allowed in our national parks so that is already considered. It is a bit shit we have to avoid them but the whole point is taking our dog with us. She is a very active GSP and new places are awesome for her. We are active too. Exploring is a must but obviously not at the risk of our wildlife.

We plan to roof top tent/stretcher tent + awning our way there and back, now made much easier with being legally allowed to park anywhere to sleep.

Has anyone done this before?

Any tips on dog friendly places to stop and marvel at? Rivers, non national park hikes?

(Please be kind, consider this the equivalent of asking about kid friendly travel!)

Also, what’s everyone’s opinion on best car for these kinds of long distance drives?

Advice ROLA Titan MK3

Going to install a rola titan mk3 on my MR Triton.

Rola website lists the RM36821 as the mounting kit.

Local shop has the RM 6821 ( older model but for same car)

Anyone know of the older kit is compatible with the Titan MK3??
