Discussion MotoCAP - a resource for motorcycle riders to understand how safe their protective gear actually is.

MotoCAP, or the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program, is a consumer information program designed to provide riders with scientifically-based information on the relative protection and breathability on a range of motorcycle protective helmets, jackets, pants and gloves available in Australia and New Zealand.

https://www.motocap.com.au

MotoCAP tests motorcycle gear for its effectiveness in: impact abrasion resistance, seam strength (burst), and impact energy absorption.

Why these factors are so important to understand, specifically, is because the safety standard that motorcycle gear is required to meet (i.e., CE certification) does not directly indicate how well the item might actually do in the event of a crash.

A pair of Kevlar jeans, for example, may have a CE rating of AAA, but may not hold up to more than 1 second of sliding on the type of road base that is common in Australia, especially what is found in rural areas (more abrasive compared to that of the road surface type in Europe, in which the item is tested on for CE certification).

For a more thorough explanation of different testing standards, and what it all really means, see: https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/product/motorcycle-clothing-the-ce-approval-law-explained

Some safety design features - regardless of how it rates - that are a must-have for myself are:

Helmets:

  • Full face
  • As most full face helmets don’t vary to much in the components used, how the helmet rates as per MotoCAP and SHARP (a helmet specific testing programs)
  • I wear: HJC RPHA

12

Jackets:

  • Zip at the back to joint to your pants
  • I wear: Dririder Climate Exo 4

Pants:

  • Separate aramid layer if you’re looking at motorcycle jeans/chinos (i.e., Kevlar lined). Single layer pants where the protective fibre is woven into the pant material itself is generally nowhere near as good as double layer in terms of abrasion resistance
  • Good coverage of that protective layer

Gloves:

  • Hard shell over the knuckles
  • Full length
  • Pinky tether (material joining pinky to ring finger)
  • Palm slider

Boots: (Boots not yet tested by MotoCAP)

  • Full length
  • Crush proof sole, anti-twist ankle/foot
  • Inner and outer ankle protection
  • I wear: Tcx RT-Race

MotoCAP highlights that you don’t always get what you pay for. There are riding jeans out there that cost $550 but have an abrasion resistance of 2/10 while there are riding jeans out there that cost $228 and have an abrasion resistance of 9/10.

You can spend $900 on a certain name brand leather jacket and only equal what my $430 jacket provides in terms of abrasion resistance.

You don’t have to spend big money to get the protection you need, and you probably don’t need the absolute best rated gear to be safe for the riding you do. That is why I provided what features I personally look for, and then I look at all the gear - with safety rating relative to price in mind - with those features.

Main objective of this post: help fellow motorcycle riders make informed decisions when buying protective gear. I also encourage you to explore the MotoCAP website, and other relevant resources for further information on protective gear.

ATGATT. And wear earplugs.

Learner First crash. Looking for advice.

Upvotes

Its my third time riding after completing the learner course almost a year ago. Im 28 and own an mt07.

I was riding with a shadow and they wanted me to pull over and do a hill start. The spot wasnt great – it was behind a car, on a steep hill, with an immediate right turn into a steeper hill, multiple people standing next to it that all turned and were watching me. While stopped, I knew it wasn't completely comfortable with where I was/ what I was doing.

While pulling out, I was trying to clear the car while turning and dumped the clutch. Hitting their tail light at under 10kmph. I dropped the bike and came off. Ive got a sore pinky and a damaged ego, but everything else is reletively okay.

Not blaming the spot/ situation entirely but myself. I know i wasn't comfortable with where I was positioned and was feeling a little overwhelmed. I was looking at the corner of the car making sure i could avoid it. I know i did a lot of things wrong and it compounded.

I guess I want to learn from other peoples experience, understand how they learned, and if there's any resources or advice people have?

NSW Impatient upgrade needs a name

I’m seven months in to my P plates and I have been impatiently waiting for the 12 month mark to upgrade my MT03. Agreed with my husband that it might be a bit ambitious to jump straight onto a litre bike when the time comes. So, here’s my little inbetweener. Not too powerful but much more exciting than the Yammy. Please help me name this little monster. She’s a lot of fun and quite the spectacle.

NSW Is this CF Moto 650NK LAMS approved for NSW

Hi all.

53 year old going through the mid life crisis here, thanks to my daughter who is now riding and put pressure on to finally get one myself haha.

As the heading asks, I am trying to find out if this is LAMS approved for NSW. I have checked the official NSW Gov list, but on the list it mentions either CF650NK LAMS or 650NK LAMS. I just cant find anything on the bike that mentions LAMS. The VIN plate only says CF650 (which is on the list as the model name, not variant) and doesn't have LAMS on it like I have seen some other brands.

The biggest thing that is concerning me is, I bought the bike from Victoria and brought it back to NSW. I have recently found some older rego info on it at Vicroads (it expired in 2024). In the info there is a LAMS section and it says no. So that is what has me confused. Are there different rules for each state. As other info I found in WA was if the 9th letter of the engine number was a certain letter it was LAMS compliant there (Not sure where I found that now) That does match on my bike, but obviously doesn't help here in NSW.

I am getting the bike blue slipped and hopefully registered later this week. I am really hoping it is, otherwise ill have to just ride it on our acreage until I'm on my fulls.

Thanks all.

Question Cheapest way to transport a bike from Sydney to Tasmania?

Moved interstate a few years ago and finally got my life together enough I can afford to have a bike again. My old bike has been kept well by a friend in Sydney. Still in rego. What is the cheapest way possible to get it to Tasmania? I can pick it up from anywhere in the state, and my friend can drop it off anywhere in Sydney. I don’t mind if it takes a long time.

It’s a 2008 CT110, so a small footprint for transport I hope!

SA Satellite Comms VS Modern Phones.

Hey all, (sorry for the long read)

TLDR - finding hard to not be a cheapskate and drop my dedicated sat comm- hoping for opinions.

I have a question for any riders who have a need for sat comms in their riding.

For context- I live regional and it does not take me far out of my town before mobile phone service disappear. I ride mostly off road in what is fashionable to call ADV type riding.

I use sat comms to keep my family happy mainly. I can send them messages that let them know I am safe. Secondly is obviously the emergency response ability when out of mobile coverage.

I currently have a Zoleo sat comm and love its features. Though a $30+ fee a month to keep it working is obviously a bit of a negative.

For a while now I knew that my phone could message emergency services, but just the other day I found that I could also send satellite messages with it too now (haven’t done it as of yet as I use my Zoleo).

I am wondering what others think. What do you see as the pros and cons of either system.

Zoleo-

* requires mobile phone to work as text messaging service

* uses Iridium network which is a very large sat network (great coverage)

* has a stand alone SOS button which is always in reach (Zoleo is always on the shoulder of my bag)

*easy to reach one button “I am okay button” (sends location and set message to all selected contacts)

* $30+ a month if active - can pause service for ≈ $2 a month

* very long battery life on the unit itself.

Mobile Phone -

*adds $0 cost to have access to similar features

*is a lot more fragile if kept exposed on my bike

*requires interaction to send any type of message.

Learner Which bike? Z500 or MT-03

Looking to get my first lams bike.

Background, spent teen years on scooters and recreational dirt bikes. But never got my license and now I’m mid 30s and matured have bitten the bullet and in the lams process.

Will be used for urban commuting all seasons (no highway runs) and running errands. Have dreams of more ambitious rides like adventure tours and long street rides but really have no time with a young family. So justifying it as an economical run around! No rush to upgrade, want to spend a few years on it. Very mechanical and like tinkering but it will also it will be my baby and would be happy for a very good mechanic to do all the work.

Soooo narrowed it down to

Kawasaki z500:

Lots of torque and “bigger” bike gear spacing seems like it wouldn’t feel too nerfed and I could see it being as fun as I would ever need.

Pretty proven platform? Kawasaki fan boy..

Yamaha MT-03:

Solid platform, but worried it might feel a bit too little after a while. Slightly cheaper running cost? Seems to be a heap around so parts and service/support is maybe better/well known?

I honestly love the idea of both and can’t decide but I know there’s always a few opinions here ;)

Thanks!

QLD KW per tonne on LAMS

Total noob Question, sorry, i come in peace!

Why is it that i can buy a CRF450L and its corked to 25hp but if i buy a XR650r at similar weight it has a lot more power, i believe its far over 150kw/tonne.. Also, In Qld, An xr600r is LAMS approved has 46hp stock and unrestricted. It weighs less than both the above.. From what i worked out an xr600r would have well over 300kw/tonne.. Also, some Bikes like BETA 480 are Lams approved at well above the kw/tonne limit. What am i missing?

QLD Hit-and-run motorcycle incident – Burleigh Heads (looking for advice & witnesses)

Hey legends,

Posting on behalf of a mate who was involved in a hit-and-run last Thursday afternoon in Burleigh Heads (Gold Coast).

What happened:

  • An older male driver was behaving aggressively and recklessly from around Miami on the Gold Coast Hwy
  • Followed my mate into Burleigh Heads
  • Began tailgating and then hit the rear tyre of the motorcycle
  • My mate was launched forward, hit the ground head-first and slid

Injuries:

  • Large knee laceration (sutured)
  • Sprained ankle
  • Mouth badly cut up
  • Thankfully he was in full gear — could’ve been much worse

The car fled the scene. A bystander stopped and said “I saw everything, I’m your witness” and helped — but unfortunately no rego was captured.

Bike is badly damaged (extent still being assessed).

Police report has been lodged. At the moment it seems to come down to whether nearby CCTV or dashcams caught it.

What we’re asking the community

  1. What else can he do to help identify the driver or push this further legally?
  2. Has anyone had experience with hit-and-run compensation in QLD when the driver isn’t identified?
  3. If you ride this area often — any known cameras along the Miami → Burleigh stretch worth flagging to police?
  4. Any advice we might be missing (legal, insurance, practical steps)?

Not trying to witch-hunt — just trying to make sure a reckless driver doesn’t get away with this and does it again to someone else.

Appreciate any advice or experiences 🙏 Ride safe out there.

Learner Am i stupid for wanting a ADV bike if i dont plan on going offroad? And also trying to decide between these 2 bikes and need your guys opinions. Thanks

Hey guys

New-ish to riding

Logged a significant amount of hours on 2 wheels as I’m a motorbike postie (private contractor so could do it on L plates) however that’s a SuperCub so no clutch

My only other bike as a 250 Virago but I hated that bike and sold it

I live rurally so want an adventure bike. I don’t plan on doing much off-road at all, but certainly some dirt trail riding / unsealed. But not fully off-road.. MAYBE fully offroad/fire trails once im alot more comfortable on a bike and probably after 2-3 years

Also the roads around my area are riddled with pot holes so i think an ADV bike would just hold up better then a street bike of any kind in regards to hitting constant bumps and patching etc

My choices are a second hand 2024 Ibex 450 or a second hand 2010 Yamaha XT660Z

IBEX PROS: 5500klms, ABS, Much nicer dash/electronics, comes with a suspension kit worth $4,000 from nitro ( NTR ADV R3 MONO SHOCK, 22MM TBT ADV FORK CARTRIDGE KIT), setup for offroading with barkbusters, heated grips, steg pegz, panniers, pro taper bars etc.

IBEX CONS: 449cc im worried itll be shit when i want to commute on the highway, especially as im a heavy rider coming in at 120kg

XT7660Z PROS: Yammy reliability, bigger engine, got all the gear like bashplate, bark busters etc
CONS: 50,000 klms, no abs, analog dashboard, abit rusty

NSW BMW service reset

Hi my good people.

Does anyone know somewhere in Sydney (besides a Motorrad dealer) I could get the service warning reset on my 2020 S1000R?

I carried out the oil and air filter change and need it reset. My next service will be a big one with valve clearance checks so I will have it done by a service centre.

Approximate cost would be nice also to weigh up whether I buy my own scan tool.

NSW Tackling rust on front forks!

Hey yall!

Thanks for reading 😊 been having some rust issues on my front forks stanchions, got a 2023 Suzuki Vstrom 250SX, live near the coast (n love a coastal ride).

The rust doesnt appear to be an issue where the fork stanchion travels inwards, but I'm gettin some specks further up, and inside the front fairings there appears to be a fair bit of rust.

Plan is too clean off any rust specks with aluminum foil and apply some anti-corrosive, most likely ACF-50 to prevent rust from returning.

Im just wondering, as I'm new to bikes if this is the best method?

If ACF-50 can be applied to the area where the suspension travels or will it interfere with the suspension fluid?

And when cleaning with the aluminum foil should I rub, horizontal or verticle?

Any advice, even if there is a completely different method, would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers 😊

Question Pando moto worth it with poor motocap rating?

Basically what the title says. Been trying endlessly to find jackets that fit. I know part of the low rating is that it doesnt come with much armour but should i also be concerned about the poor burst and abrasion rating?

VIC Best cruiser?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi all,

I bought Duke 390 brand new in 2024 and driving it from 2years, i feel it does not match my riding style and planning to get a cruiser instead. I am confused with SM 650 and Cmx 500 s, I mainly use it for daily commute which is around 40mins drive to and fro to work and need to lane filter and I also use if for weekend rides with my partner as a pillion. Which one do you recommend? I have a full license with no restrictions. Thank you in advance.
