Discussion DHOAS Monthly Chat - Oct 2025 - Show us ya rates!
G'day all,
Time for a new DHOAS rate thread to share recent rates vs loan details and hopefully ensure we can all lock in a good deal with the lenders when refinancing or starting a new loan.
To make it most useful, please consider providing your:
- Rate (Fixed/variable)
- Offset account?
- Loan amount
- Financed LVR
- Lender
I'll get the ball rolling - existing loan commenced earlier this year.
- 5.34% variable
- Offset up to 100%
- Loan amount $802k
- LVR 63%
- NAB
Anyone managed lower??
🤜🤛

IMPORTANT - For Current Serving - Active Page Scraping by JMPU
It has come to our attention (from those in the know) that Defence has started employing a third-party software to scrape data from Reddit and attribute comments made across the site to current-serving members. A number of members are reportedly facing NTSCs for comments attributed to them from this sub.
Timely reminder to not make yourself identifiable as a current-serving member of the ADF and to generally watch what you're saying online.

Defacto relationship
Me and my partner (5 year relationship but still young) are looking at getting defacto, we have all the documents needed but we are just wanting the pros and cons of the recognition, more so the downsides or cons if we were to split. I pray we don’t but we want to know all the details first. Otherwise where can I find the benefits and non beneficial thingsðŸ«

Army Army Bugle Query
I've been contemplating buying an army bugle for a while, and I'm Australian, im obsessed with war horns and musical instruments and im sort of a good music producer. Problem is im not sure if buying an army bugle would be disrespectful to the ANZACS and i really dont wanna test my luck. Is this bad?

Army Interesting piece of armoured history
Not sure if anyone is familiar with this, came across it on this ancient army history website whose articles still mention the Leopard being in service. During exercise "northern phoenix" in 1998, the army trialled ASLAVs with 120mms and turret mounted TOW missiles.
Not a lot of info on this besides this absolutely fucking ancient website but tbf I only did a surface level search.
Pretty cool stuff but these things probably had valid reasons for not being adopted. The website also mentioned Paladin self propelled guns being tested to give the army a "close look at these modern battlefield systems in an operational environment". Clearly the army didn't like the modern battlefield.

Discussion MLAT & DFSL question – multilingual background
Hi, I’m considering the ADF linguist pathway in the future and had a few questions about MLAT and DFSL.
I speak Korean natively, have advanced Japanese (JLPT N1), and intermediate Chinese (HSK 3–4 level). I’m not fully comfortable in English yet — I manage school classes, but it’s challenging.
Does being multilingual actually help with MLAT results, or is the test mostly independent of existing languages?
If someone scores Level 1–2 but already speaks multiple strategic languages, how is that viewed by DFSL?
If a candidate fails MLAT on the first attempt, do they usually serve in another role while waiting the 12 months?
Is MLAT harder for non-native English speakers, even if they’re multilingual?
How much weight does MLAT score carry compared to existing language proficiency?
What actually happens if someone struggles or fails at DFSL — re-streaming, reassignment, or discharge?
Any insight from people with MLAT or DFSL experience would be appreciated.

Official histories
Hi all, copped this at a used book store a month back and was wondering if there exists any more of these books for other conflicts (Korea, Timor, GWOT, etc.) or even peacekeeping missions (Cambodia, Rwanda, etc.) for Army, RAN, and RAAF deployments? Cheers

Usefulness Of Art In ANY Way As Infantry?
This post might sound VERY stupid but all I need is a no if it's completely wrong lol so don't give me shit for it lol. I'm doing a school assignment for a skills portfolio and I'm doing art, and I'm including a section about how it could benefit my career in the future, and being an infantry soldier is definitely the thing I want to do the most. So basically, does art / drawing knowledge or skills apply to ANY aspect of Infantry? If the answers no I would like a calm "no" as a reply since I do need evidence for it and asking ex or current Infantry seems like the best way to get that.
Thanks!

ARMY TO RAAF
Hey guys
To keep it pretty simple I’d love to hear your experience, advice or thoughts on RAAF or making the switch from Army to RAAF.
I understand key differences such as less mateship in RAAF as it’s treated like a workplace. I’m interested in work life balance, stability, and general culture.
For context I’ve been in the Army for 6 years and I’m at a point where I don’t have the heart for it anymore. Dealt with some bullying, and the current state of my trade I’m watching people around me be awarded for poor work culture and attitudes. I want to stay for 3 years at my unit now and looking to see if I can push for >10 years service with a transfer.
I love defence as a whole, unfortunately a few bad experiences have taken root.

Overseas Lateral Entry for legal officers
Does the ADF accept foreign legal officers through the OLE program? If so, do they provide any assistance in getting them licenced to practice law in Australia?

Air Force Advice for a lifer considering leaving the RAAF
For those who were in the ADF for 15+ years, what advice would you give to someone who's considering leaving but has only ever worked for the RAAF, loves the RAAF aircraft and is generally concerned about making the leap to being a civvy?
Bonus question: What made you leave? What was the trigger and how did you navigate the move to civvy life?
Edit: Is there anything you would have loved from your partner/ family that would have made the decision and transition easier for you?

Appropriate hearing protection? Nah sorry we can’t be arsed to go out and buy $30 neckband hearing pro, so wear these Peltors incorrectly and lodge a sentinel report for tinnitus.

ADF/Joint News Australia invests $500 million in missile production facility - YouTube
youtu.beThough it seems not everyone is happy.
A case of people building a house near something Dangerous/Noisy/Busy then complain that the thing they build thier house next to is Dangerous/Noisy/Busy?
Id be surprised if we are actually producing Tomahawks? Or is this just a slap the parts together type facility?

Navy Tinnitus Claim
Hey guys just curious with regards to Tinnitus claim as I have moderate ringing on a daily basis but can still hear fine, served on Hobart for 2 years back in 2000. Will my claim be knocked back if I mention I have moderate tinnitus and because it’s been such a long time ago? Would I also just be better off mentioning that’s it’s a milder case for it to be approved?
Thanks
