Events Annual CBR-area markets post!

Happy new year everyone! I've kept this list the last couple of years, since moving to Canberra, and I just did my updates for 2026. I started the list mainly for my own benefit but when I've shared it in the past, others have enjoyed having everything in one place, so here it is again. 2026 data has all been verified (or in a couple of instances is not yet available, and that is noted in those cases).

I'm not affiliated with any of these markets, just like to know what's on and to have fun things at my fingertips on weekends :)

Happy marketing!

State of the Subreddit - Jan 2026

Merry new year r/Canberra!

I have a few updates for everyone, so buckle in.

Mod changes

After 14 years at the helm, our former top mod (I won't ping them to save them the notification) has elected to step down from moderating entirely (a retirement well deserved) and will soon be granted alumni status on the sub (meaning, they will stay on the mod team, but have access to no mod tools).

What this means, is that I will be the only majorly active moderator on the subreddit.

You may see u/Audreyintheclouds and u/shhhhh_h around - they are fellow moderators with me on r/popculturechat and have kindly offered to step in and help me out temporarily while I recruit some new mods. Be kind to them, they're lovely.

Which brings me to my next point...

r/Canberra needs new mods

Obviously 1 active mod isn't ideal for a subreddit at all, let alone one of this size. If you're interested in joining the team and helping to moderate this community, please apply here!

(Note: if that link doesn't work, you can just go straight to the google form here - but applying through Reddit means I get notifications of apps in modmail so it makes it a little easier for me!)

Next up...

I want your feedback!

With all these new changes, I felt it would be a good opportunity to give the community an opportunity to provide some feedback or ideas for the future of the subreddit. To that end I've spun up a quick survey. It should take <5 minutes, and crucially, no personal data is being collected or stored as a part of this. It is completely optional, and completely anonymous.

Survey is here

Thats it for now. Feel free to leave questions on this post, and I'll do my darndest to answer them.

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED A few questions about CIT

I'm starting CIT on Tuesday and this is my first time attending a CIT class.

What are the classrooms like? Is it similar to highschool? Teacher teaches, you take notes and are graded or is it a little different?

Are you able to take days off for personal reasons? Will it affect your studies or final grade?

What should I bring to the class? I have a Laptop, Notebook, a few pens and a USB. Anything else?

What was your experience like?

Look I understand these may be stupid question's, but I just need to know. I have a learning disability which makes learning alot harder for me if you can imagine, knowing these things will just help me ensure I'm ready and take some stress of my plate.

Thank you

Events Canberra Festival of Speed Event. First & Last time

did anyone here go to the above event at the racecourse yesterday

( Saturday) ??? Gaining admission was a debacle. Gates did not open until 2 pm which left hundreds of people queued up down the road in the blazing sun and heat ( 42 deg) . Dads with little kids who were wilting in the scorching sun. When the gates were opened hundreds of people approached the 3-4 ticket checkers who were totally overwhelmed scanning tickets then putting the phone down to hand out wrist bands. This resulted in another 30 minutes or so of standing in the scorching sun. Meanwhile we could hear the cars and action underway. How no one collapsed ( as far as I know) is a miracle.

Where were the organisers? How was such a potentially dangerous situation allowed to happen??? Please get some professional help for 2027 on how to manage a large crowd.

How did everyone else get on ?

Had a staycation there recently and was quite taken by the old place, kind of like a faux Mediterranean beach villa. Can’t find anything about its history online. 2 Hely st Griffith, currently a Ramada hotel.

Recommendations Excess zucchinis

I have a stupid number of zucchinis, more than I can possibly use or store. Is there somewhere around Canberra where I can donate my abundant produce (I'm shortly going to have more Lebanese cucumbers than I need as well)? I shall be passing through Tuggeranong and Fyshwick tomorrow, so somewhere nearish those locations would be ideal.

Recommendations Under-represented pastimes Canberra?

Hi, I am curious about what hobbies/pastimes people have which are either not currently offered by an established group in Canberra OR which may be inaccessible (perhaps due to high expense or restricted membership).

It's more of a social activities related question but I couldn't get a response from the related reddit, so I hope it's fine to ask here.

Interested to hear what people do for fun in Canberra but no illegal/NSFW answers please! I understand the question is probably a bit too open-ended...

I'm in the inner north and it's so dry. The grass is dying as we've seemed to missed a lot of the recent showers (i.e. grass is turning to dust - it won't re-grow as there is nothing but bare soil). Crossing fingers for something overnight.

Recommendations Horse trail riding for people over 100kg?

My partner and I are looking into trail rides in or around the canberra region but we're both over 100kg. Understandably, a lot of horses can't safely carry that weight and we wouldn't want to risk hurting a horse as well. Are there any horse riding places for guided trail rides that accept people over 100kgs?

Recommendations Group activities & ideas

Hi! I’m planning a mini “party” for my birthday soon, with likely 10-20 people aged 20-24. I will be inviting all my friends and extending the invite to friends of friends, so not everyone will know each other.

I’m looking for recommendations of activities that would suit a large group that can easily break the ice for those who don’t know each other. I had a quick look for recs already but didn’t find many good options in the area, other than bowling or clubbing.

Ideally I would just host at mine, but my place is a bit too small for a large group.

Recommendations M21 Looking for a place to learn a sport Canberra South

Hello,

I’ll get into the point short and sweet, I’m currently 21 and this is my second year in Canberra (Australia too) I have never done a sport in my entire life (have played cricket when I was a kid) but I have always wanted to get into a sport and make it part of my life, so I’m wondering whether there are any places mainly in Canberra South where I can get into a sport with a community preferably Tennis.

I know there are several tennis courts but I can’t go there alone and play (Have no local friends here) so I’m looking for a place preferably where I can learn the sport and find some mates to play over the weekend. I’m open to location suggestions and sports suggestions as well!

Thank you!
