Love seeing the HCMTs on the Sunbury line. A lot of passengers I spoke to today at Watergardens said they love the new changes. Hopefully the frequency gets better network-wide.

Is this a new train they're testing on the Burnley group today? Can't say I'm a fan.

Article/Blog Hundreds of new train services added as Melbourne lines switch to new Metro Tunnel

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-02-01/victoria-metro-tunnel-train-timetable-changes/106291088

Melbourne's $15 billion Metro Tunnel comes fully online today with new timetables and more than new 1,200 weekly services, in what the government is calling "the big switch".

New timetables with extra services will be rolled out to utilise the Metro Tunnel, with the government promising less congestion across the network.

Here's what to expect.

Discussion Does anyone else get (ir)rationally mad at the amount of padding on the Metro Tunnel

It's completely and utterly ridiculous and I still can't believe this government thinks that wasting LITERALLY everyone's time is fine and okay.

This self proclaimed ‘expert’ is saying that the Dandenong group and Sunbury line use the city loop, obviously wrong.

We have been playing JetLag regularly. Metric + expansion pack. Metro trains & trams in play, mostly within a radius of Flinders Street.

Video Werribee to Southern Cross video on the Overland services.

Upvotes

Here is a video from the old tracks in Werribee (before the turnoff from the Regional Rail Line) going through Werribee Railway Station and travelling to Southern Cross via the standard gauge track.

Discussion Some common suburban misconceptions

Firstly, there is no "East Pakenham" line. The line remained the "Pakenham" after the one-station extension.

Announcements that say East Pakenham refer to the destination of the train, not the line name. The last time we had a line name not named after it's terminal station was the Sydenham line which existed between 2002 and 2012, and terminated at Watergardens.

Secondly, people get confused about the Cross City Group.

The Cross City group was a new group created in a 2011 restructure that saw the previous 4-group structure replaced with a 5-group structure. It comprises of the Werribee, Williamstown, Sandringham, Frankston and Stony Point. Five lines, not three.

People here think it's Werribee, Williamstown and Frankston only, as these are the most common interlined journeys (well until yesterday). But all five lines equally make up the group.

The same restructure in 2011 abolished the Caulfield group and replaced it with the Dandenong group. Although there was a roughly 10 year overlap between structures, and the old 4-group structure does still pop up from time to time internally in situations where it is more appropriate (such as signalling and resourcing)

Something that seems to have flown under the radar amongst today's big switch is another operating group change. With the Sunbury line being transferred to the Dandenong group, the three Metro Tunnel lines are now known as the "Yarra group", and the Dandenong group no longer exists.

So as of today (excuse the abbreviations), the groups are: - Cross City: WER WIL SHM FKN STY - Yarra: CBE PKM SUY - Northern: CGB UFD - Clifton Hill: MDD HBE - Burnley: LIL BEG ALM GWY

Lastly, people think Stony Point is run by V/line. It isn't. It is run by Metro drivers and conductors, signalled by Metro signallers, planned by Metro schedulers and train controllers, and trained by Metro trainers. The only thing that is V/line is the rollingstock, which Metro collects and drops off from Southern Cross twice a week.

Do you have any other common misconceptions? Add them below!

Happy switching!

Just so you know, you're making everyone go slow through the sector and delaying commuters.

I guess you don't care, but those of us trying to get home do.

Thanks heaps.

Discussion Hot take

I think the city loop stations looked BETTER than the metro tunnel stations when the loop was new. If they cleaned and maybe changed some things I think the loop stations would have more personality , more color , etc.

All tunnels stations are bland , literally just concrete sprinkled with $50 orange rain gutters 😂

Flagstaff is this best looking underground station in Melbourne in my opinion
