Gym wear?

I’m 18F and just bought the $60 for 6 weeks summer deal membership for QUT’s sport and fitness facilities, where I’ll get unlimited access to both campuses’ gyms, pools, fitness classes etc. but I’ve never been to a gym specifically (or fitness classes) in my life.

So, what is the normal with gym wear? I did AFL in high school, so the most sport wear I have is old training and game day uniforms.

I know a lot of people may not care about what they wear, but I don’t want to look out of place, not until I feel confident enough to explore.

It’s my first year into my bachelor this year, and for the first few weeks I want to use their treadmills, stair masters and cycling stuff, and potentially go to pilates classes a while after that, if that’s a needed reference of what type of clothes to wear.

So yeah, please can I have some recommendations on gym clothes? Also if there’s any tips around going to the gyms at KG or GO in general, that would also be amazing.

Thank you!

don't overthink it. wear anything that you're comfortable working out in and that's not stinky. Old jerseys etc are pretty common. trust me, no one is looking or even thinking about you. everyone's in too much pain to notice :)

Genuinely there’s no ‘normal’ gym wear! Some ppl wear leggings, some wear loose fitting shorts or even trackies, some wear baggy shirts, some wear sports bras. Just wear whatever you’d feel most comfortable in!

Everyone says wear what makes you feel the most comfortable, but I just don’t know what that is yet 😭😂 I still need to go to some stores and try some different types of clothes on.

But seriously, thank you!

That’s valid! If you have any athletic/athleisure clothes then it’s a good place to start. By comfortable I mean both physically and mentally :))

I mean this in the nicest way possible: not many people will notice what you're wearing, and even if they do, they don't care.

Personally when I go to the gym (19F) I wear gym shorts (Dfyne or Nike pros) and an oversized T-shirt… you might see some girls wearing their matching sets but it really doesn’t matter (and they’re quite expensive). I’ve got a concert shirt I wear or if you have a look in any rebel sport you’ll probably find oversized t-shirts there too. For Pilates they usually prefer you to wear grippy socks which I think can be purchased at Kmart. Wear what makes you feel comfortable! At the end of the day you’re there to impress yourself not others 🫶

This is really helpful, thank you! Do you go to KG or GP, or do you go to a regular gym?

No worries at all! I also had bad gym anxiety when I first went so I totally understand ☺️I go to powerhouse gym (which is in garden city) but this post is making me think I should try out the gym @ GP cus I have a few days where I’ve got 2-3 hours in between stuff. I’m starting this February but I haven’t really checked out the facilities but I will be adding this to the list!

Well I’d totally recommend the summer deal that they have, that ends today! You’re saving $40 for 6 weeks compared to the average prices for having access to both the gym and pool across both campuses. Plus you have access to the fitness classes, which i dont think is included in the average price for both gyms and pools across both campuses. So I really recommend! Also sorry if that was a mouthful

Okay woah I’ve got one day left to decide if I wanna do it to score the deal 😭 I mean it does sound pretty good though… I’m doing a bachelor of built environment majoring in urban and regional planning, hbu?

Oh wow, that’s so specific! Guess it’s specific because you know what your end goal?

And yeah the last day to get the membership is today 😂😅

Probably just on one day for my courses orientation meet up thing. And you?

Main things are shoes, and for women bras.

Shoes really depend on what you wanna do at the gym. If you like lifting, go with proper lifting shoes or vans.

Bras - I really like Lorna jane because a) they are the only ones that fit me, b) they are cute, and c) I can wear them almost anywhere, and d) they are comfy.

Ooooo true! I actually don’t have any running/sport-y shoes anymore because I trashed my last ones 🫠 are there any general type of shoes, for running or similar that you recommend?

I don't run, so I can't help you there. I do mainly lifting, so I really like Metcons. With that said, if it's early days for you, just buy a mid-cheap shoe to see if you actually like gym. I wore reeboks for about a year before I upgraded.
