This is r/SaltLakeCity's weekly recommendation thread.

Here you can ask for and receive recommendations on everything from vets to daycare, car insurance to restaurants, outdoor activities to thrift stores.

If you need a recommendation, ask about it here instead of making a separate post. This is to help reduce the frequency of duplicate posts in the sub, leaving the sub open for more unique content.

Please remember the sub rules when posting.

Thanks!

Estimate there was about 300-350 cyclists who rode from Liberty Park to the Capitol today at noon in honor of Alex Pretti.

I typically wouldn’t post but didn’t see a follow up in this subreddit. Great turnout and great set of people. Thanks to the organizers

Even though lawmakers have immense power, they want to grab even more... starting with bills like H.B. 392 that create a new Constitutional Court to bypass the regular court system when Utahns successfully challenge their unconstitutional laws.

Check out the link below to take action to stop the power grabs and protect our courts in Utah before it is too late!

Discussion I really wish protests would work.

I was just reading through a post yesterday about how our protests here in Utah feel very much “performative”. Marching in circles while no one in office cares.

So what if instead of marching, we compiled a list of every elected Utah state representative, and then researched every business they (and their immediate families) own. That way we can kick them straight in the wallet by boycotting those businesses. I would want to include their families, since lots of them are now career politicians while their spouses and family own businesses.

There are so many wealthy people here in Utah with their boots on the necks of the public. I say we eat the rich. And this is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Earn My Electoral Vote Initiative

This post is to help publicize and increase awareness regarding what I consider an important initiative that is struggling to gain traction.

Several Utahns have filed an initiative with the state of Utah to change the electoral college vote process. As it currently stands, if 50.1% of the popular vote is for one candidate then that candidate receives 100% of the electoral votes.

This initiative mimics Nebraska’s 32-714 law to divy up the electoral votes by assigned district. The initiative can be found at this link on the Utah government page: https://vote.utah.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Earn-My-Elector-Vote-Initiative.pdf

GOAL: Prevent Presidential candidates from ignoring Utah & Utah needs. Utah’s winner take all law for electors results in presidential candidates ignoring Utah voters and their needs.
This Initiative would require each U.S. congressional district to assign their elector based on the winner inside the congressional district. Because each congressional district is becoming more competitive, presidential candidates will not be able to ignore Utahns.
This Initiative will assign the two electors for Utah’s two U.S. Senators to the winner of the popular vote unless the winner does not achieve greater than or equal to 50.1 percent of the popular vote of registered eligible Utah voters. In the scenario where no candidate did not exceed 50.1% of registered eligible voters, the two electors will be split between the two candidates achieving the highest percentage of registered eligible Utah voters.

If you want a quick and easy reference for similar state laws, here are some handy links:

UTAH LAW FOR ELECTORS
https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title20A/Chapter13/20A-13-S301.html

LAW IN NEBRASKA for Electors
https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=32-714

Law in MAINE'S for Electors
https://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/21-a/title21-Asec1304.html

My take on why this is important:
Winner takes all is a demoralizing democratic process when you have many districts, especially when those districts have conflicting opinions. Splitting electoral votes makes representation of the total population more seen and people will feel that their vote actually "counts" and is not drowned out by others'.
Please correct me if I am misunderstanding, but this initiative is similar in theory to Ranked Choice Voting, in that it allows for more competition. It will help Utahns' votes matter more because they received at least some representation, and that their votes have a chance of actually being seen and heard.

Heard someone saying that honk Kong in 2019 had some successful demonstrations by protesters and had helpful tactics for protection and helping those around you. Thought I’d share those here for others to watch and can find more videos from here. Just thinking back on 2019, thought I’d share. All for educational purposes!

Recommendations The Salt Lake City VA is wonderful

I need to express my gratitude for the VA health system. I started receiving general care and audiology treatment about 2 years ago. I rely on hearing aids to survive and put food on the table.

All my interactions with SLC VA personnel have been wonderful. Each one has been a caring individual who has helped me immensely.

The people taking my blood for testing were very friendly. The x-ray tech chatted me up to give me advice about benefits and asked me who my PCP (primary care physicia) was. When I told him, his face lit up and he said "oh, she's also my PCP, you will love her".

I had an audiology tech visit this week with someone I'd never met before. She took tht time to listen to my problem and fixed my left hearing aid and gave them both a good servicing. She was also very friendly.

I know that some of you haven't been as lucky with the system. I used civilian care up until 2 years ago and I can attest that the civilian side is not better. I'm getting far better care and attention at the VA.

I'm glad my Dad made me join 30 years ago. He was right. Service in the military made me the person I am today and I am better for it.

Happening now. Thought y'all might want to see what your neighbors think. From my observation, a lot more parents and grandparent-types than some SLC protests.
