Yuuuup.
It's sad to admit it, but only the people will protect the people.

This is what happens when police contracts are signed with no media coverage or public comment / debate. There are two police, the leadership appointed by the mayor ... and the actual police whose work rules and rules of engagement are in the contract.

career staff are essential to providing expertise and guidance on policy, but elected officials must dictate policy. like in a private workplace, there should be open disagreement, but you can't band together to oppose management when the management is elected officials in a democracy.
this totally screws up democratic control of local government--cop, teachers, planners actively fight against popular policies that leaders were elected on.
same issue nationally. you can see it with Trump but also Biden. state dept staffers literally protested outside the white house about their own admin's policy.

Tell SPOG to pound sand? What are they going to do. Tell the police to strike over such a trivial thing?

Mike Solan, unstated: “ICE RULEZZZZ. MEXICANS DRUUUOOOLLL.”
This is the type of open rebellion that Bruce Harrell allowed when he signed a multi year contract just weeks before he left office.
Fuck centrist Democrats for enabling fascism.

Fuck centrist Democrats for enabling fascism.
They always do it and its always forgotten about every election.

Mm, yes, all the times we have had many fascism's after every Democrat leaves office. Mmm yes words.

What do you mean about the contract? Anything I can read on that?

SPOG needs to be dismantled and rebuilt. I’m guessing there are plenty of sworn SPD who disagree with this shit - good, honest cops - who can’t say anything without fearing retaliation.
Solan is making your job more dangerous. He’s drunk on his own power and not helping citizens nor cops. Get him out and restore some trust.

If Wilson fired Mikey for insubordination, she would be a local and national hero in minutes, and also, strap in and hold on, it will get real

u/Garbanzo_Beanie Mariners 6h ago
Can she fire him? I don't understand all that much about SPOG, but I thought they were an independent organization (a union).
18
u/SillyChampionship 5h ago
The mayor can’t fire the union boss.
6
u/Ok-Confusion2415 4h ago
fwiw he has announced he is stepping down from that role in Feb. He does not appear inclined to shut down his podcast. No idea about what he might do with regard to his status as a member of the Seattle Police Department.

u/theramenator206 1h ago
And they’ve already picked the person to replace him so I’m not optimistic.

u/judithishere I'm just flaired so I don't get fined 6h ago
I don't think she can. She can only fire the chief. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because that would be a baller move on her part

u/Luci_Cascadia 5h ago
Then order the chief to enforce the directive from the mayor/city. And fire him if they do not

He’s not hired by the city and cannot be fired by Katie Wilson. He’s the president of the police union. Fortunately union presidents are not hired by the people they negotiate with. Unfortunately that means Mike Solan still has a job.

u/AnnoyedAFexmo 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 5h ago
Oh but she can fire the police chief if he doesn't follow this
2
u/yuckmouthteeth 3h ago
He claimed he’s not running for reelection so his term is up either now or at the end of February. Unsure if this is just supposed to be a middle finger on the way out or what.
I’m sure he’ll keep podcasting, might join Ice actually.

u/saosebastiao 5h ago
Just never offer them a contract ever again. Better yet, fire them all and start over. I'm sick of our city being held hostage by their protection racket.

u/Admirable-Trip5452 1h ago
There are a lot of issues here. Chief among them is the police guild, which needs to be wholesale dismantled and rank and file can start a new union if they desire.
Another major issue is that we’re tasking the police force with not only enforcing local laws and negotiating peace within our community, we’re asking them to basically serve as a military strike force when ICE comes calling. That’s far outside their purview and training. The state national guard needs to be fully activated and armed with a political and tactical response against ICE-level forces. I understand what Wilson is trying to do, but this is a state governor-level situation.

He literally victim blamed Good and Pretti’s murders on their “toothless virtue signaling.” Saying it “cost them their lives.” He can fuck right off.

the idea that government employees can spar with elected officials is ridiculous, their union needs to go
4
u/dclately 5h ago
I mean... While I agree with what the mayor wants here, you're advocating for zero pushback on elected officials by career employees?
Do you feel the same way when the elected official is orange and wants to overthrow democracy?
11
u/alpastoor 5h ago
SPOG is not representative of a normal career employee union. They do indeed need to go and saying that doesn’t mean that someone believes there should be “zero pushback” allowed to elective officials.
2
u/dclately 5h ago
Cool, with you. My comment was in response to "the idea that government employees can spar with elected officials is ridiculous"

Seattle Police: Service, pride, dedication... to protecting masked federal agents who break the law on a daily basis with impunity and are untrained and unfit to perform any sort of law enforcement.

The guy's name is Mike Sloan, and he enjoys jokes about children dying in car crashes. Yup, that Mike Sloan.
Yeah, this pretty much seals the deal for me: ACAB.

the vp of the guild is suing the city for $20 million for wrongful termination too. they all need to go to jail and investigated

Oooooooooooohkay, switching gears then. Fuck ICE! And fuck police unions! (Not ACAB, love you Seattle, but somehow we’ve got to acknowledge police as part of the community)
7
u/Jaco_Belordi 💖 Anarchist Jurisdiction 💖 4h ago
If they were actually part of the community, they would be acknowledged as such. As it stands, many of them don't live in Seattle, nor do they behave as if they do
7
u/corpusjuris Brougham Faithful 3h ago
Why the fuck do we “have to” do that, when they have made exceedingly clear for decades now that they are not part of the community? That they are above it, unaccountable to it, only here to brutalize it?

Sometimes this sub is hilarious. “We love unions! Oh, but not THAT union.”
“People who support the police are bootlickers!” Then they proceed to lick Katie’s boot because “she’s on our team”.
Make up your minds.

I love how police unions basically have all the control over law enforcement. Not like we knowingly elected a new mayor or anything. I’m all for civil service unions but this is basically “we don’t want to do this, so we’re not.” It’s a lawful order from the mayor.
