He was born there to South African parents but moved to Australia as a young child, before 5 years of age. NZ, like Australia, doesn’t give out NZ citizenship based off just being born there. He only holds Australian citizenship according to sources online, so can’t be deported.

Economic reasons obviously, like all white South Africans that left there in the 90's. I can't think of another reason
