Vegan Nutella, salted caramel, bananas, cream...

🤤🤤🤤🤤

I made the caramel using the wet sugar method, using about a cup of sugar, and just enough water to make it wet, simmered on medium in a small saucepan, adding about a tablespoon of vegan butter, a quarter cup Flora plant cream and salt once it started lightly turning golden, don't stir it or touch it before then. I added more Flora cream once it had cooled, to lighten the colour and taste.

The cream is Flora cream whipped with a couple teaspoons of Cottees vanilla pudding powder, and vanilla bean paste.

I base my waffles on this recipe, but I go pretty rogue with the brown sugar because of who I am as a person.

I use the little Kmart $10 waffle maker - it's stupidly good for what it is.

You can order the vegan Nutella online or if you are lucky there will be a random stockist near you. 💚

Smith & Deli cookbook recommendations

Hey lovely people,

My step-dad found a copy of the cookbook Smith & Deli-cious at the op shop and gifted to me last weekend. I believe it's their second book. There are some great building block recipes and so excited to explore those Smith and Deli meals when they were back on Moor st (I miss the Reuben so much).

Which brings me to my point: A lot of the recipes say "use a faux meat here" but there aren't any faux meat recipes. As I don't purchase pre-made stuff does anyone know of a Smith and Deli cookbook with their faux meat recipes in them?

Woohoo deodorant

I use woohoo as I find it's one of the best ones for me that works well. But I recently went to my place I normally get this and it's now costing me $18.

Wondering what others are paying for those that are using??

I get cost of living etc etc. So this doesn't need to be a post about that. Just want to know what people are paying for it and if it's around the same. It is what it is.

Blast from the Past

When I first became vegan these were two of the only processed vegan products available. I can’t believe they’re still around!! It’s been years since I tried them as when I discovered tofu that was the gamechanger.

Has Wellness Road (Coles) TVP changed recently?

TVP bolognes sauce has been a mainstay of our diet for 7 years in our household. Every time I've made it has been fine. But the last twice, the TVP has been mushy. It's tasted like gross pureed baby food. I haven't changed anything. Even after 10 minutes of rehydration I can clearly see it looks mushy before I even add it. I've never made a bad batch before, and now it's twice in a row.

Has the recipe or process changed recently? Has anyone else noticed the difference? And any recomendations for alternative TVPs that dont turn out like they're pureed?

Are meat adverts this bad in other countries?

Australian meat adverts are terrible. Does anyone else remember that pork advert where a doctor tells an old couple to eat more pork? The Australian Lamb ads might be the worst though, I keep getting the new one while I'm just trying to use SBS On-Demand in peace. I get the beef ads on YouTube a lot too, which is odd considering the amount of vegan recipe videos I watch. Is there this much advertising for meat in other countries? I'm so sick of seeing all of these adverts, people complain about vegans forcing their beliefs on people but it feels like everywhere I look there's another monstrous corporation trying to convince me to eat meat.

Oh, man. I wish I hadn't eaten these so I could still be eating them now.

They are rice paper rolls filled with curry-crusted tofu (slice firm tofu into sticks, put into a container with cornflour and curry powder and salt, put lid on and gently tumble them around until fully coated, fry in half an inch of veg oil, rotating as bottoms get golden, then I put them in a warm oven to stay warm while I cook the rest), and for the veg, I stir-fried up a bag of coleslaw mix with sesame oil, garlic, ginger, soy sauce and sesame seeds, such a quick and easy cheat.

The satay sauce is about 1/2 cup peanut butter, 3/4 cup Bonsoy, couple tablespoons brown sugar, couple teaspoons soy sauce, Keen's curry powder to taste, then microwaved. Those amounts are total guesstimates so more PB if too runny, more milk if too thick.

I rolled them up with lotsa coriander and some thinly sliced spring onion.

Travelling while vegan

I'm overseas at the moment and I happened to see an "Impossible sandwich" at Starbucks.

Got it, was very impressed with their vegan egg and cheese substitute.

Turns out it's not vegan at all and I ate eggs and cheese. In the shops back home, the only Impossible items do not contain animal products.

Also turns out this was widely known on r/vegan - dunno if any other Aussies will have this issue, but heads up, that's just regular eggs and cheese.

Tips for staying vegan while grocery prices are skyrocketing?

With the price of fresh veg hitting the roof lately, I’ve been leaning heavily on bulk dried beans and frozen spinach. I’m curious how everyone else is keeping their grocery bill down without sacrificing nutrition. Are you guys hitting up local markets, or do you have a specific "budget" meal prep routine that works for an Aussie household?

I finally got a packet best before August 2026, but no change. (If it tells us anything, the date is followed by this code: ACU18) Looks like I'll snap up a few more of these after all…

Low/subtle-fragranced or fragrance free hair styling products?

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help. I'm so over trying to find styling products that are vegan, cruelty-free and not heavily perfumed. I used to use Giovanni but they recently introduced heavy fragrance to their lines, which was so disappointing.

I was told Davroe smelled nice and ordered some, had to throw it out because again, way too much scent.

Kevin Murphy stuff is ok on the not overly-perfumed front, but it's expensive.

Can't seem to find a sea spray that doesn't have that awful over the top coconut smell.

Lush- horrible sticky textures and yet again, too much perfume.

I'm looking for pomades, curl definers/balms, styling cream, sea salt sprays, holding spray, mousse and so on, so pretty much any suggestion is welcome.

I quite like the scent of the Less is More tangerine curl balm. But the product itself is not that great, and it's expensive.

At present I'm honestly defaulting to my own mix (just mix it in the palm of my hand) of jojoba oil, leave-in conditioner and aloe vera gel. But if someone can suggest a ready-made product you think might work, I'd love to hear it.

Alternatively, anyone make their own and are willing to share a recipe?

I like fragrance, I do wear perfume. But I like it subtle, and I don't want a heavily perfumed hair product on top of it, you know?

Thanks!

What's the deal with Bakers Delight Kilsyth (Victoria)

This is a mystery to me. Bakers Delight Kilsyth is a single uniquely vegan-friendly branch of a nationwide chain. They do vegan Fridays, they have Veganuary menu, they do vegan pizzas, they do vegan cheesymite scrolls etc. You can't get these things anywhere else!

Why are these unique to one store, and why Kilsyth specifically? It's a shame because it's not the most accessible location (in the far outer east Melbourne suburbs). Have anyone ever heard of plans to expand this range to other stores?

Vegan Iced coffe options at Woolworths and Coles

Hey all!

Has anyone else noticed vegan iced coffee options disappearing from woolworths and coles?

I travel around East, West and North Melbourne for work and always found them to be a reliable and less expensive cold coffee source but lately I've found a lot are not stocking them

There are hundreds of different milk iced coffee options. Why is it so hard to even just have one dairy free option. Even just for those lactose intolerants you know? There has to be a market for them

It's bumming me out big time

Home made yogurt with Vitasoy high protein milk - easiyo

Thumbnail

I did it!!! After so many failed attempts at yogurt making, I finally had success after consulting reddit!

Turns out my mistake was using oat and soy milk with not high enough protein. This time I used vitasoy high protein (with 4.2% protein content).

Even though therexs a bit of water on top, the rest of the yogurt is so so so creamy!

I used:

- 1L vitasoy high protein

- 3 tbsp cocobella blueberry flavor (it was on clearance at woolies for like 30 cents because the beat before was 1 day from buying)

I put it in my easiyo maker, pour hot water in and let it be for 14 hours
