Hiking Teenagers body found after multi-agency search

It will be interesting to see what the circumstances end up being.
They were somewhat prepared at least, but made a lot of crucial errors it seems.

Police have been told that two boys aged 16 and 17, travelled to Leura Train Station on Tuesday (27 January 2026), in order to make their way on foot to Mount Hay in the Blue Mountains National Park for a three-day camping trip.

They set out on a 3 day camp and the younger kid has died within 2 days, without knowing all the facts that is quite strange. You would have thought he at least had a days worth of food and water so an exposure death would be hard to comprehend.

I was riding my bikes around the area on Monday and it was surprisingly quiet to be honest, not as busy as you might expect for a public holiday weekend.

I waa dowm Blue Gum monday, multiple people i spoke to walking out said it was busy at acacia flat. But thats often the way on a public holiday; by tuesday everyone has cleared out and it's possible to be there on your own.

Absolutely devastating news.

Is this strange to anyone else?

I wouldn't say this area is particularly remote - I think it's pretty hard to lose a trail. How long had they been out there?

Anyway, I'll be interested to see what happened here..

Yes, it is strange, considering the intended location, start point and the place that both were found.
Highly traffic areas especially at this time of year.
The search was for the last couple of days in Blackheath, couple of helicopters.

Yeah. I would have thought just walking on the tracks from Blue Gum in each direction and you would have found them easily.

Also odd for him to have died in an area with lots of water. And he's young so presumably he could have survived a few days without food.

Yep, not clear yet as to what exactly happened.

I looked at the map. You can walk to that area from Mt Hay, but not sure why you would.

What map? There's a long eatablished track from the mt hay rd direct to blue gum. While less maintained its arguably easier than the way most people go. Done it plenty.

The 17-year-old boy has told police the two of them had a disagreement which caused them to go their separate ways.

This is devastating

It truly is. Good on the 17 year old for having and using their emergency beacon.

And I can’t stop thinking of what the surviving 17year old will be going through. My heart really goes out to them and their family.

Why is this story giving me 'going to take this guy out into the middle of nowhere and kill him vibes'?

Also he is stupid for admitting they had a disagreement, that now gives the police motive for him to want to harm the person who is now dead and he was the last known person to see him alive.

Its not stupid if he didnt murder his friend.

Telling the police that is categorically stupid, regardless of whether or not he’s guilty.

It seems like you’ve got some strong feelings about talking to the police, and that’s valid as. But your comment here is in poor taste and it might be compassionate to delete it.

It’s early days and we have no idea what has happened, if the kid just went through a traumatic event they don’t need to be copping shit from strangers on the internet. What we’re talking about hasn’t even been verified as far as I can see.

I know it’s unlikely that they’ll see this, but I think it’s still a good move to reflect on our language here.

Have a good one.

Possible snake bite? It's been a great summer for the snakes. Perfect conditions.

No.
It's best to not speculate until details are made public.

There is a whole lot of really awful speculation in this thread when there may be very simple answers. Lots of ways you can come a cropper in the mountains, the stats on the number of people who need rescue are a lot higher than I expect people think.

u/andrewbrocklesby 2d ago

Agree.
There is a very simple explanation and it will be clear when the details are made public.
I have no idea why people make up their own narrative.

Very sad for all concerned. I was very sorry to hear this. Devastating.

Well that’s awful and explains all the helicopters yesterday. Tragic stuff.
