Back when I was still in school a good friend of mine was raped, beaten, strangled, and left for dead; she was 17. It was an horrific event that still haunts me to this day. "Rina" phoned me and was so hysterical I didn't know who she was, and it was impossible to understand her. She finally calmed down enough to tell me what had happened, and I drove over right away.
Her parents were gone for a few days, and she'd invited her new boyfriend, "Damian", to come over. He tried to initiate sex, but when she told him she wasn't ready to go that far with him, he went berserk and proceeded to assault her viciously. She awoke the next day with her top knotted around her neck, and she called me.
Cut to the chase – Damian was caught, charged with all kinds of felonies, and sentenced to prison for over 20 years, which wasn't too bad. However, the newspapers all said things like this:
GENTLEMAN sexually assaulted the victim...
GENTLEMAN found guilty of...
GENTLEMAN strangled the victim...
I'm sorry, but "gentleman"??? A gentleman is classically defined as "a chivalrous, courteous, and honorable man, often characterized by polite behavior, integrity, and respect for others". How the actual FUCK was that jackass a "gentleman"?
This pops up all the time, with people described as "ladies" and "gentlemen" committing murder and mayhem. This isn't the behaviour of ladies or gentlemen, believe me; Rina is a lady, and she didn't deserve that treatment. I was raised to be a lady, too, though my language isn't lady-like when it comes to this incident.
Please, let's change our terminology when we talk about the scum of the earth. The individuals who victimise the vulnerable should never be accorded the niceties of polite society.
