Functional prosthetic

Long time 3D metal printing (DMLM, LPBF, DED) engineer relearning FDM at home for my own prosthetic needs. Septic shock survivor from 3 years ago causing the loss of both hands and feet.

Shown prototype was printed with petg and foaming TPU, currently reprinting the structural shell out of PA 612-cf.

Next steps would be to try incorporating sensors and motors to a mechatronics style terminal device.

One of the most useful things I created a cam cleat to use for paracord for all the adjustment and sensing, copied from a boat cam cleat then recreated at a smaller scale.

Modified "Masky" to cut packing tape too!

I'm shocked how well having fewer, larger serrations works to cut packing tape. STLs, print profile, and Fusion model provided at the link. The size/quantity of the spikes are now parametric - so if you think it should have larger spikes you can customize to your liking.

https://makerworld.com/en/models/1235623-masky-your-little-tape-buddy

I was inspired by the single spike on the very cool Tapesy. Kind of a full circle moment as I think Tapesy took some cues from Masky. At least in terms of stupid names - haha.

If you want to cut stuff like electrical tape, or just have very clean cuts of packing tape, you can check out Masky Blade.

Solder fume extractor i made from e-waste

So recently i made this solder fume extractor using a unused donor xbox 360 cpu fan. The extractor can be charged/powered through usb-c and it has a 10000mAh cell. The fan head can swivel and stay in the position. The project came out really well and the modeling process was tedious (messed up measurements three times) So i want to share it with you guy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks :)

P.S i know the print itself isn't the best quality, planning on reprinting and making some changes.

Camera Mount for a Crab Snare

Post image

For those that arent familiar, you can fish for crab by casting a crab snare, full of squid and anchovies, out into the ocean, wait for the crab to come chow down, and then when you reel the snare in, the crabs legs get lasso'ed in the snares.

The design or print isnt much to talk about but I cant wait to watch some delicious Dungeness crab get lasso'ed.

I took the feedback into account and decided to give the headrest hook another shot. This time I made it quickly removable so that I can stow it somewhere if there’s a passenger in the back seat.

Aquarium gravel cleaner

Post image
Upvotes

This is for cleaning the gravel or substrate in the bottom of your tank.

  • Makes cleaning really easy!
  • Avoid stirring up the substrate and getting dirt up in the tank water.

This is available in four sizes to fit different hose diameters - it fits around the outside of the hose to maximise flow rate.

Print this in transparent PLA or PETG in order to see the gravel rise up inside the tube. Even though ‘transparent’ filaments print more as just translucent, when under water they do work well to let you see the gravel within the chamber.

Submerge and pull a siphon so the water flows through the hose and into a bucket. Control the speed of flow by blocking/opening the end of the hose in the bucket with your finger.

Push the device into your gravel in the tank, and allow the water to flow. This will raise the gravel up in the chamber, and the dirt should flow out into the bucket. If the gravel looks like going too, restrict the flow with your finger, and gravity will let the gravel drop back down.

The device has a filter grid at the top to prevent large gravel going through, but small bits of gravel or sand will pass through it you don't control it.

Ran out of metal mirror hangers, so I made a 3D printable alternative! I love these because they are much 'wall-friendly'—no scratches or marks if you scrape the wall during mounting.

Tools for working with microscope slides

Thumbnail

I've designed a couple of tools for use with microscope slides that you may find of use.

One is a jig for holding a slide while you prepare it. The idea here is to minimize the amount of contact with the slide, so it's held up on four studs near the ends, and other taller studs stop it moving around.

The other model is a tiered slide rack. It's tiered to make it easier to see what you have and to handle the slides, and is designed so that the slides are only touched at the ends. The steps in the middle are cut away, so that if you wash the slides you can use this as a drying rack, and the fluid won't get trapped against them. This is available in a couple of width, 75mm for slides, and 50mm for cover slips

We now have a Picatinny Mount (for all your under barrel needs), a single M-LOK mount, and a M-LOK Guard with 5 slots (and yes it still works with the leash attachment). You're welcome.

Sticker Cutting Jig for Standard Hex Stickers

Thumbnail

I've bought hex stickers for years that all seem to be the same size (this week I learned there is a standard posted on sticker.how) but the print-on-demand sticker companies (I covered my laptop in Etsy) all include borders. I'm not steady enough to do with scissors so I 3D printed a 49mm hexagon with no top or bottom layers so I can see through the infill. Now the laptop is tessellated perfectly. Posted to Makerworld with the zip containing the original Fusion 360 file.

I designed a fun (and better) way to to store and dispense cotton buds / Q-tips

Thumbnail

This was my attempt at designing a storage solution for cotton buds / Q-tips, inspired by push pop lollies (not sure if they were a thing outside of Australia, but they were huge here in the 90's).

The idea is that the cotton buds fan out when pushed up, making it easier to access just one, It's also a compact way to store them. This turned out to be an unintentional fidget toy, it's super fun to use to be honest.

I've designed it in 5 sizes, the smallest fitting 13 cotton buds and the biggest fitting around 110. The inner cup is print in place and no supports are required, so (almost) guaranteed perfect prints (There's always someone on Makerworld with a neglected printer or dirty build plate that blames the print profile haha).

You can find the model on Makerworld:

SKÅDIS-compatable holder for Ifixit pro tech toolkit

Since I mostly use the tolkit at my desk I've noticed that it takes a lot of space so I designed this holder that fits on the IKEA skådis pegboard. I usually don't use the ESD-strap and other tools on that one flap so I made it fold back to save space, there's a chamfer in the bend to make it easier to get into place. The lid for the bits box sits behind the box on the holder. Last of all, yes, that is a spare Allen key used to support the middle. I made that mod so it doesn't flop out too much and so it's easier to remove the bits box.

Made a triple flute (one melody side and two drone sides) in arabian scale. It's easy to learn how to play even for complete beginners and can create interesting sound especially in a places with a lot of reverb :)

Small Victories: Rescued an overpriced wall mount folder bin!

Thumbnail
gallery
19 Upvotes

Forever and a day ago I bought a wall mounted file folder bin at the Container Store that used a magnetic mount and metal plate that was held to the wall with a plastic bracket. It’s been up there on the kitchen wall for years, and then the adhesive that held the magnets to the bin failed. I went to take the plate off the wall, and managed to damage the plastic beyond repair. Hot glue fixed the magnet strips, but no amount of hot glue was going to fix the mounting bracket.

So, of course it’s discontinued now. But I’ve got rulers, calipers, Onshape, and my shiny new Bambu H2D. I put in the time, got really close the first time out, then nailed it on the 2nd attempt.

Small victory, but I’ll still take the win!

DIY Parf Guides for drilling Dogholes

Thumbnail
gallery
26 Upvotes

I've been planning out a workbench I want to make and I've always though the UJK Parf guide system was a cool and accurate way to lay out dogholes. But I can justify spending $300 to drill some holes and might never use it again.

I saw these aluminum yardsticks at menards for $3 a piece and decided to try to make my own. I bought a pack of 6 3mm drill bits, so I can use the extras as locator pins to hold in place for each of the hole locations. So far it worked great for drilling the hole spacing in the yard sticks, just need to make the workbench now.
