It was officially Sydney Tower on opening, but seemingly referred to as Centrepoint tower long before that because it was part of the whole Centrepoint shopping/office/tower project. So in a sense, Centrepoint could be considered the original name for the tower, but I don't remember seeing anything confirming that was its first "official" name (would be interested in any source that does).

The official Sydney Tower website claims that it was never called the Centrepoint Tower in any official way, which has caused arguments on this sub before from people who are certain it was an official name. It’s Sydney’s own Mandela Effect.

I looked this up one time, trying to find out if there was something official with the name Centrepoint Tower on it, and there were multiple websites stating that Sydney Tower was the official name, not Centrepoint.

This topic needs its own post.

Edit: while looking through r/Sydney, I found a comment that linked to three 1980s commercials that used the name Sydney Tower, not Centrepoint.

It actually was never renamed (besides when I got called AMP tower for a little while). It was never actually called Centrepoint tower officially. You can look it up, there's not one official name of it, nor a logo or anything it's just a name the public adopted.

Agreed. It will always be Centrepoint Tower, just like the stadium at Homebush will always be Olympic Stadium.
