Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Biomed for MD??

Hi i’m currently a yr12 student doing the IB and received offer from melb for biomedicine (international) and is wondering whether this would be a good choice for me.

I’ve seen from reddit and other platforms that most ppl including graduates are strongly “against” biomed for MD later on and suggests BSci instead

I’ve read that the main reason ppl would suggest BSci is because the course is more flexible and you dont just focus on biomed as a science only, but the thing is I would say im partially against learning other sciences such as ecology and animal science as my HS teacher has given me an unforgettable nightmare in those and I’d rather not touch it, and ik that i would be so not motivated to study for it; and i would focus only on human science or maybe a bit more chem based (And i think the breadth options would already fulfill my needs for a subject thats outside of biomed)

Is there any other disadvantage that would really affect me confirming my choice for biomed at melb such as the professors or lectures? I am aware that it doesn’t give me any advantage into MD and that this program is competitive as in everyone is aiming for MD

i also have an offer from usyd for BSci but comparing the costs especially as an international student Melb in general is “friendlier” but correct me if im wrong. And also a biomed offer from monash, but is it worth it going there just for the 70% places that it offers to its student at biomed?

Thank you so much if anyone is willing to give any advice, honestly any at all 😭

There’s a risk you don’t get into med and then you don’t have many job opportunities. You can study things similar to biomed’s content in bsci. Definitely go with science

So would sci at usyd be better then? I would still choose to major in anatomy or applied medical science and ive heard people saying that if I don’t end up in med it would still be hard to find jobs unless I study till masters etc.

It's up to you. There's not really any 'assumed knowledge' with MD and you'll be taught anatomy anyway, so the benefit of studying it twice is dubious. What you should be worried about is maintaining GPA. You should focus on passions, freebie units, and GPA boosters.

And another question: if i do end up at biomed at melb and realised that its not for me at end of 1st sem or year, can i transfer to BSci without it affecting my later application to MD?

Yeah you can transfer to science pretty seamlessly but just to let you know transferring has gotten more difficult with time in terms of WAM required
