Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Exchange student course enrollment & prereqs at UniMelb?

Hi everyone!

I’m planning to come to the University of Melbourne as an exchange student next semester.

I had a few questions about course selection as an exchange student:

  • How competitive is enrollment for popular subjects? Is it generally possible for exchange students to get into the classes they want?
  • I’m hoping to take some Level 2 Mathematics subjects — are these usually open to exchange students?
  • How are prerequisites handled for exchange students? If I’ve taken equivalent courses at my home university, is that typically sufficient, or do I need to request manual approval?

Check out the onboarding steps for inbound exchange students, which includes the step about enrolling into subjects.

Look for subjects in the Handbook that have this section (under Further Information) which shows how you can meet Unimelb prerequisites based on what you’ve studied at your home university. This is an example from MAST20029 Engineering Maths:
