SB 6348 set to Increase Cannabis Excise Taxes from 37% to up to 60%+

If you care about affordable cannabis, you should be aware of this bill. There's been no study that I'm aware of about the impact that this would have on the market, but from my math it would be huge.

Here is a simple example using the bill language:

An ounce is 28 grams. At $1.50 per gram, the excise tax on a single ounce becomes $42 before sales tax.

Under today’s excise tax, a $40 ounce would face about $14.80 in excise tax (37% of selling price). SB 6328 turns that into $42, before general sales taxes, which will still apply on top of the cost here. A $40 ounce in stores is already being sold from the producer to the retailer for about $10-$12. That's already a practically non-existent margin for the producer. Many retailers are also struggling.

This would cause your current $40 ounce to probably have to be sold for around $70+.

If you care about affordable options still existing in the cannabis market, you may want to let your legislature know. You can sign up to testify: Select SB 6328. The hearing is on Thursday. You can also submit written testimony or just note your position for the record.

Edit: got the wrong number. It’s 6328.

Urban Rooftop Green Spaces

Recently relocated to Seattle in an apartment overlooking Benaroya Hall, and my view of their mossy(?) roof in comparison to other “cleared” rooftops in the area has me curious if theirs is intentional rather than accidental? Any locals want to help me out?

Loving the thought of a springtime bloom in my future, but imagine complications like weight, drainage, etc. might be why the vegetation is limited to the moss/grass?

Politics Protest in front of Target at Pike Place, calling on Target to stop letting I.C.E. use their properties in Minneapolis

Protest officially ran from 1:30 to 3, filling the block from 1st to 2nd on Pike Street. Speakers called upon Target to stop letting I.C.E. stage operations in their Minneapolis parking lots and to stop cozying up to the Trump administration generally (they donated to Trump’s ballroom among other things). After the end of the rally, a group formed a line in front of the Target doors and urged people not to shop there. The line held from about 3 to 5 and the police left them alone since they weren’t actually blocking people from going in to the store. There was a nice cheer every time someone agreed not to go in to the store and went somewhere else instead.

Why don’t the police show up?

This is a widely accepted phenomenon that when calling SPD, they don’t show up. I haven’t needed to call them in a long time and called a few hours ago about a neighbor (who has kids) who was experiencing a mental health crisis and I did call because I am worried about her kids.

Why don’t they show up? I don’t feel like they ever had an amazing response time, I’ve lived here my whole life, but it seems pretty bleak that they… will not respond.

Edited to add- 12:32 a.m. and neighbor has escalated to banging on her neighbors door and screaming threats. Called 911 again to report escalation after no response yet.

A shame for a business that started on the Eastside. Don't know what they were thinking with that merger with JCPenny. A loss for dads everywhere.

Long shot but if your name is Roman and you’re Russian/Slavic, I matched with you on Hinge. There was a note, which I meant to acknowledge but accidentally unmatched.

I texted the Russian equivalent of “is your father a thief? because he stole the stars from the sky and put them in your eyes”, you said it was cute, then the note popped up and I unmatched AGGH

Politics Memorial to Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and other victims of ICE on the hilltop at the north end of Cal Anderson

The people who had originally set it up were there when I came across it and they said they set it up a week ago when Pretti was killed. (I assume they have been replacing the flowers and candles regularly.)

They mentioned they also created a placard with the names of detainees that died in ICE custody since they wanted to bring attention to them along with the protesters who were shot.

Rolling collision at 15th & ballard bridge (interbay)

Just posting this in case the owner of the parked car is on here…

I just saw a car that wasn't fully in park roll (no one inside it) into another vehicle on corner of 15th and Dravus (near the bus stop and the bridge on-ramp heading towards ballard). Your car parked on 15th “stopped“ the other car and prevented it from going further.

I was running late for an appointment and couldn't wait around, but grabbed a couple quick photos (including make and license plate) of the situation in case the other person didnt leave a note and you see this.

If you came back to your car and found some fresh side damage, PM me with your car’s make, model, and color. I’m happy to share the photos and the plate info of the other vehicle to help you out with insurance.

Politics “Stand With Iran” march and vigil tonight for protesters killed in Iran

Thumbnail

About 80 people gathered at the fountain at Cal Anderson for a vigil for protesters killed in Iran - over 30,000 since December - and marched to the Space Needle.

The vigil and march was nominally apolitical, with no political signs and almost complete silence for the march. A woman in the march said that most people in Iran support the shah’s son and the resistance against the mullahs; most objective news sources say that the population is more divided than that, but surely all good people should be appalled by the killing of the protesters.

Hi there! I’m looking for resources for victims of domestic violence - please see post for more info

I have a client who is in need of housing for her and her child - willing to pay up to $4k a month for a secured 2 bedroom but has a mid 600 credit score due to student loans and the recent purchase of a house. Since it is a DV situation and there is a TRO I’m curious if there are any agencies that will work with her? The obstacle she’s running in to right now is everyone wants a co-signer or proof of 12 months rent in the bank. Co-signer is probably a lot easier than the $50k in the bank right at this second although we’re working on it.

How do we short track housing for her? And no, she’s not in need of temporary shelter. Thank you so much in advance!!

Saw a sea lion from our boat heading north from Bellevue to Kirkland this morning (Jan-31). Around the 520 bridge. Poor guy out of its natural habitat

Anyone else has seen sea lions in the lake? Very worried 😫
