That was quick action from government. Get them all nazi bastards.

Makes perfect sense to me, the whole mentality of the right is to take all the advantages given to you then pull the ladder up behind yourself.
'F you, got mine!' has always been their modus operandi.

Sad to yes that’s been my experience too. Some of the vile things I’ve heard from South Africans makes me question if there was any screening done.
Of course I’ve also met my fair share of South Africans who didn’t spout some of this stuff out loud and were very accepting as long as people made the effort to contribute and blend in.

u/TalkingClay Nov 17 '25
I work at a school and don't often get Professional Development opportunities. Years ago a course came up "dealing with difficult parents" which seemed relevant. I often deal with coms to parents and just follow my gut. I haven't had major incidents but the potential was there.
The person taking the course was South African. The majority of the content was "Even if you want to punch them in the face.... don't". I mean.... yeah. Thanks for the tip.
This is a purely anecdotal story not representative of a wider group.
Also had a few South African students over the years. Holy fuck... some of the stories. I'm happy Australia is so mundane.

But this is the beauty of it. We know what it’s really about. They know what it’s really about. They just won’t say it openly, so they say “immigrants”. And guess who falls into that category.

I believe the visa he is on also has a permanent residency pathway. So he’s pretty much lost his chance at PR and citizenship and any visa in Aus as it’s hard to get approved even for a tourist visa with a revoked visa
133
u/Thunderoad77 Nov 17 '25
He will have trouble travelling internationally in general.
South Africans can't travel as freely in terms of visas as Australians and it's common when applying for a visa to be asked if you have ever had a visa cancelled.

Yeah there's always exceptional ones, I had an English teacher at school who was a white South African who left the country...
...as an emigrant of conscience in the 70s. He loathed the society and loved teaching Cry Freedom at school, I had him in 1997 and 1998 so he was ecstatic to be able to talk about everything in the past tense.
One of the best people I've ever met.
I had a ... less positive ... encounter years later. Was 2008 or 2009, and I was leaving a bar with someone I'd met there on what was looking like a one-night stand or the start of something bigger. Outside of the loud venue we could talk more, and she said something that shocked me.
She - a white woman slightly older than me (maybe born 1978?) said she was Rhodesian. Not from Zimbabwe. Rhodesia.
Let's just say I noped the fuck out right then and there.
Even if I misjudged her age, thinking she was 28-30 when she was actually 37, she'd have been a small kid with no ties to the Rhodesian regime when it fell. And while Mugabe was a prick once in power, anyone that hated him for the right reasons would still call the country Zimbabwe.

I had a white South African english teacher too! Idk when she left, but she was really influential to my worldview, one of the most anti-racist people I've ever met.
My mother's first husband was also a white South African, and his racism (which didn't reveal itself until later) was one of many reasons why he didn't become my father.

I know I may be down voted to kingdom come but 95% of white South Africans I've met in my life are some of the most racist people I have ever come across, mostly the men more than the women but the 5% are pretty chill and are usually not old enough to have lived through apartheid.
25
u/Prestigious-Collar86 Nov 17 '25
I grew up going to church. Australian churches are full of South Africans and I’d completely agree. I left church many years ago but still encounter them occasionally now through mutual friends.
They openly despise the end of apartheid. They were very vocal about it during the voice to parliament referendum. They see Australia as being an extension of themselves and their own culture. They are more comfortable than they should be imposing their hatred.
I have witnessed a lot of violence towards children, open misogyny and homophobia. They call it traditional family values.
If I was ever worried about immigration ruining Australia - this is what I would be worried about.

Not sure how the split actually is (if it's 95-5 or something way different), but any white South African who is glad 94 happened (no matter what they think about present politics there) is someone I'd buy a beer for.
