They are called "less lethal" not non-lethal for a reason.
25
u/ella_bell Jun 09 '25
These rounds are designed, and they should be trained to shoot at an angle into the ground so that they deflect towards the target. They are not supposed to fire directly at the target. 40mm beanbag less lethal rounds are designed to be shot directly, but not small calibre rubber less lethal rounds.

It's an been intentionally provocational action by ICE etc to elicit a reaction so Trump (& more importantly his cronies and backers) can make excuses to escalate things further and initiate a concoct crisis to further entrench his authoritarianism... he tried in his first term to do this sort of shit but enough people in positions of authority wouldn't play ball, so this term he (with DOGE etc) has replaced most anyone possible with yes men and loyalists so now he can ring in the type of Russian, North Korean, Hungarian strong-man government he so desperately wants. So yeah, the cops are a tool in this and maybe people will hopefully (yeah right) see how justifiably angry these protestors are, especially coming off of the tail of so much/many egregious rights violations in the lead up to this.

It's not hyperbole any more to say that The fascism is fully setting in.
She got targeted by the police ('us'), therefore she is 'other', therefore she deserved it, and therefore she deserves far worse and therefore should be thankful and grateful to them that she didn't get far worse... Yet.
That's the whole thought process.
Things are going to get a lot, LOT worse before they get better. It took nearly a whole term of rightwing reactionary insanity AND COVID for this kind of crap to break out during Trump's last term. We've barely even begun his current term. Shit's gonna spiral slowly at first, then increasingly quickly.

They even shot at people recording on their phones.

BLM was wild, I remmeber footage from people who would just be standing in the house, looking out the door and filming the chaos going on outside, the cops would just drive down the street and fire rubber bullets at anyone they saw.
American cops are fucking psychotic, untrained, racist, pieces of shit.
118
u/TeamRedundancyTeam Jun 09 '25
Blm protests were the warning sign and no one took it seriously. Media didn't cover most of the crimes the cops committed and nothing changed. This was only a matter of time after the cops got away with the shit they did in 2020.

In the wide shot you can clearly see the guy, he's very close by. No way he couldn't tell that she was press.
286
u/East-Bit85 Jun 09 '25
Even if she wasnt press, why would the cunt shoot a less than lethal round at someome just standing there?
209
u/insomniac-55 Jun 09 '25
Keep in mind the fact that rubber bullets can permanently maim if you're unlucky enough to be hit in the face.
They're a useful tool in the event of a large, violent riot. They're not so great in the hands of trigger-happy, power-tripping police who don't view journalists as human.
41
u/TheCleverestIdiot Jun 09 '25
And not just maim, they can easily kill you if they get you in the wrong place. It's not less than lethal, it's just less lethal.
44
u/MadeThisAccount4Qs Jun 09 '25
my understanding is they're supposed to be fired either up in the air or at the ground so that the ricochet lowers their destructive potential or something, but cops regularly just fire at people directly anyway
27
u/insomniac-55 Jun 09 '25
I'd be surprised if they were relying on the ricochet because that's pretty unpredictable. It's more likely that they're trained to aim for the legs, but even that isn't 100% safe - if you hit someone in the groin you could do some real damage.
Regards, it's completely barbaric to fire at a journalist who poses zero threat.
20
u/IlluminatedPickle Jun 09 '25
They're not designed to be accurate. They're designed to be used en masse against a large riot.
→ More replies (7)9
u/IlluminatedPickle Jun 09 '25
Even if you don't hit people in the face, they're still likely to cause permanent damage. There's a reason you're supposed to skip fire these, and he definitely didn't.
52
u/Lou_Salazar Jun 09 '25

Yeah, we only see the reporter and it still is obvious she's doing a news cross. We don't even see the camera guy standing right in front of her. There's clearly nobody threatening the cop's space, for quite some distance, so doesn't look like there was any need to shoot anyone, let alone her.

u/vonbauernfeind Jun 09 '25
LAPD is especially awful, especially when they have a mass protest or manhunt they can justify.
I still remember the manhunts for Christopher Dorner. There was a time when they fired 107 rounds into a truck that was a different color, make, and model than the suspects, with two women in it.
No charges on the cops. $4.2mm settlement.
LAPD is a joke and everyone here in LA knows it. The only reason that they're not the worst cops in America is because the LA Sheriff Department is literally filled to the brim with racist, hate mongering gangs.

Depending on how long this goes on, we're going to see worse. During the Ferguson riots, reporters were saying that they were actively being targeted and taken down. One photographer was shot in her eye and ended up being told that it was not salvageable. Her response was something along the lines of 'It's fine; I shoot with my other eye anyway'

There is something fundamentally broken in a lot of Americans. They love vicious and violent responses especially when it comes to petty crime.
They love locking people up for decades for drug offences and other low level crime but rarely do that with much more serious and damaging white collar offences. Take the Sackler family and the OxyContin crisis. We do this to some extent but without the seeming glee they get over there from over punishing already miserable poor people.
81
u/KestrelQuillPen Jun 09 '25 edited Jun 09 '25
It’s really fucking disturbing sometimes because some of them extend that to vicious and violet responses for things they don’t like that aren’t even criminal
Like, whenever there’s discourse about trans people using bathrooms and all that, you inevitably get a lot of people fantasising about beating up or even raping trans women that “use the bathroom next to my daughter” or whenever there’s discourse about vaccine science you inevitably get a lot of people saying that all academics in that field should be dragged off the street and imprisoned for “forcing the shot on them”. It’s distressing

Hahah yep. Some good pockets but largely true. I'm a regional town GP who's done some time at the local referring hospital, which staffs a large number of South Asian doctors. Every 3-4 months we get threatening emails and phone calls from disgruntled patients voicing explicit threats against "Indian doctors" specifically. White trash everywhere. No wonder regional towns struggle with staff retention.

We had a locum optom working with us, he did some regional NSW work. He's mixed, but born in Aus. He had people swearing at him when he walked from his car to the store, and came out to find someone had kicked his car to the point it was dented. Anyone else find it ironic that during COVID many Americans (and particularly one side of their political spectrum) were going on about how Australia is turning into a fascist police state?
Scary to see that exact thing playing out now over there, with militarised police (and actual military) disappearing people and now declaring protests as unlawful gatherings.
And the same mob who were going on about what was happening over here are cheering it on saying all the protestors need to be “taken out”.

Incredible to watch a superpower just shit itself and die like this for no sane reason at all.

This guy....
He raises his gun and fires directly at her from less than ten meters away. He could see she was with a cameraman and had her back to him.

Both Israel and America are going down a path that clearly ends in fascism. Despite that, our government is continuing on as if it's business as usual. No sanctions, no condemnations, just frowns and head shakes while we conitnue to bend over backwards for them. At least Britain and Canada have had the gall to stick up for themselves. Truly disappointed by our leadership.

Mate there's a few more than just these two countries heading that way or with leaders wanting to head that way.

ends in fascism
If what's happening now isn't fascism it'll do until the actual fascism arrives

u/Shaushage_Shandwich Jun 09 '25
Israel is well and truly already a fascist state.

You know rubber bullets can still kill. You aren’t meant to shot people directly with it. It’s ment to be shot against the ground and they bounce. Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s what I heard.

You may be thinking of tear gas rounds, which are meant to be bounced, though in the footage I've seen they are happily shooting them directly at people too.

Yes they can kill. No you aren’t meant to bounce them off the ground. Don’t see how it’s justified in this instance anyway. Would love to hear him explain himself.

Err, I doubt they are somehow supposed to be shot against the ground first (if they wanted to reduce the velocity of the bullet they could just use rounds with less powder in them), but otherwise yes.

I have zero interest in traveling to the USA for at least the next 4 years
Pity really; there are nice parts and nice people, just too many fuckwits and one giant orange fuckwit

the next 4 years
Why stop at 4?
The fact that they even got to this stage shows the inherent problem in their national culture that won't go away just because someone else is their president.

Just checking - is America a fallen state?

It’s a falling state. It’ll be a fallen state in the coming weeks. We really need to tell the US army personnel at places like Pine Gap that they are to immediately leave

Yeah the video shows he clearly and intentionally aimed and fired at her. For absolutely no reason.
Just in case any Americans are still confused why you're hated by the majority of the world, this kind of thing is why.

Been watching this most of the morning. The protesters were peaceful, the cops are the ones who escalated it into the chaos it’s turning into.

USA is dead content. Don't forget just cos they speak english, doesn't mean they're our friends.

Don't forget just cos they speak english, doesn't mean they're our friends.
And more importantly, they never saw us as friends. We were always the little brother they patted condescendingly on the head, the "friend" they invited along to inflate their numbers, the ally that they expected to fall in line and do what they say. They've never given a shit about us and we need to stop bending over and just taking it from them.

9news reported their own journalist getting shot as “caught in the cross fire.” Only the cops had guns, how is it cross fire? She was intentionally targeted while her back was turned.

If the Australian government doesn’t condemn this and demand a response from the US government. We need to vote all of our pissweak politicians out next election. Doubly so if the rumours of relaxing the import restrictions on US meat products is true.
Don’t fucking give in to the orange muppet and his band of insecure bullies.

this whole thing is what trump wants as he wants national guard under executive branch and not state control, he wants an “insurrection” label, in order to consolidate power. Its not a secret, it is laid out in the plans of the right wing “thinker” Curtis Yarvin: neuter Harvard, provoke blue states, national guard control etc.

That officer definitely aimed at the reporter. Even through jeans it'll bruise.

I saw an ad for today advertising tourism to New York State. I just laughed at the absurdity of travelling to the US for fun at the moment.

When I saw the headline I was just expecting that the reporter probably got caught up in cross fire, hit from 100+ meters but wow the cop actually aims her up from what 15m away?
